Chapter 1

Introduction to Hitomi

Picture a dirty orphanage with crying kids and an evil headmistress. Okay, so my orphanage isn't dirty and I'm the only one crying, but Ms. Roconaki is evil. She's always putting down us orphans. Thankfully, I got out of that place, but the family that adopted me was quite strange.
The day I got adopted was pretty normal. I woke up at the crack of dawn, before everyone else, so I could get hot water in the shower first. I dressed in my distressed jeans, brown Linkin Park shirt, and black and red converse. I looked in the mirror as I braided my silky black hair. By the time I was done all the other kids were awake.
"Here comes the taunting," I said to myself. All my life I've had to deal with the taunts of "Hitomi's so weird" and "Hitomi's such a loser" and of course "Hitomi will never do anything." It would be so much easier if it was only one kid instead of everyone. Today, I didn't hear laughs or name-calling; I heard great news.
"ADOPTION!!! All sixteen-year-old females form a line," the intercom shouted. I was a sixteen-year-old female! This was my chance, I knew it. The last time I had an adoption interview, the couple ran away screaming, all because of a frog brain. I was pushed and punched to the end of the line but I didn't care. Everyone went and it took four and a half hours to get to me.
I was surprised when I went in. There wasn't just a husband and wife; there was a husband, wife, son, and daughter. The son was pretty good looking, too. "Hi, I'm Ichigo Ajiwau," said the woman, "My daughter has a few questions for you." I looked at the girl. She had an eye patch and looked very solemn. She and her brother both looked about my age, so they had to be twins or were adopted, too.
"Have you ever been treated differently than everyone else?" she asked. Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Every day of my life and by everyone I know." I sounded more bored than I intended, I hoped they would still adopt me.
"Okay, next question," she sounded angry. Maybe she didn't want another sibling. "Do you have any piece of special jewelry?"
"Yeah," I answered, pulling out my mysterious necklace. I was told my mother left it with me. It had a big silver gem in the middle of a locket I could never open.
"She's the one," the dad said happily, "Bring the papers immediately." Ms. Roconaki told me - well, screamed at me - to get my things. "This is it, I'm getting a family," I thought to myself, walking dreamily down the corridor.
