He holds me against the wall. His hand griping my neck, as he gets even more frustrated the space between my neck and his hand grows smaller. I try to scream but can’t due to the lack of air. My eyes slowly turned black, as tears of red stream down my face. Soon my neck is covered with black and red as the colors fuse. It was like nothing I had ever felt before, his grip getting tighter but… what was this? All of my past lives were enclosing my eyes. Finally the loudest scream came forcing its way through my throat. The sudden scream must have been too much for him, for he dropped me to the floor as fast as the shriek had come. As I fall I notice a figure across the room running towards me and pushing the man away. I close my eyes and fall to the floor passing out.
Waking up to a crowd of classmates, I started to get up only to be pulled back onto someone’s lap. Craning my neck, I saw the guy I had a crush on, Riku, holding my shoulder, as to keep me from getting up. Looking around I find the people who seemed to hate me, not being far away, not teasing me, but to be next to me as if I were their sister. After seeing their faces I noticed one pale face in the background. Up against the wall, holding themselves was…Kinaki.
My name is Kyushu Yukon and until the past week or two my life had been pretty normal. Well, if you call chasing talking cats and practicing spells and managing to keep it all secret, normal. Kinaki Moraga and I had been best friends since we met at Dragon’s Cover a restaurant/inn. We shared every secret that passed through our ears. She told me that she could transform into different human and animal forms. I told her everything about my family, except for the fact that I and my family were vampires.
I rubbed my eyes and slowly got up brushing Riku’s hand off of my shoulder and limped over to Kinaki.
“Kiki… I should have told you sooner,” I said in a hushed tone so that she was the only one who could hear me.
“Kayu I understand why you didn’t tell me but… who was that man, and what did he want from you?” She was still holding herself and her eyes were glued to the ground, she wouldn’t look at me and I knew why. She had found out the biggest secret that I always tried to hide with lame excuses and not only that she found out while I was in the midst of being bounty hunted. My family and I started being hunted two weeks ago when my stupid younger sister fell into a trap. Being thirteen she didn’t want to lie to her new boyfriend. Well we didn’t expect that he was a spy for the most dangerous and well trained hunting police force.
In Japan there were suspicions of people with ‘superpowers’, these were claims of people seeing shape shifters (Kinaki), vampires (me), werewolves (Riku), and last but defiantly not least ‘dangerous’ witches and wizards, oh and demons (they look like regular people, no ooze or horns or anything). The police force he was on hunted these kinds of people. Although there were suspicions, especially in my grade the third years, no one in our school ever made these claims. No one besides me and Kiki knew Riku was a werewolf. Riku didn’t even know that we knew. I saw him change back after a full moon while I was on a walk. And besides people like us weren’t stupid enough to get caught unless they wanted to be.
After school everyone asked me who had attacked me.
“Kiki… I know this is kinda not the right place to tell you but, I’m a vamp. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you… I thought that you might not want to hang around a leech… and that guy was… a special bounty hunter who had been stalking me for the past week. He is the reason I have been acting weird. I can’t believe he attacked me in public though.” I told Kiki before everyone rushed and crowded around me. I told everyone else I didn’t know who he was while I tried to force my way through the crowd. I saw Riku walk out of the school and look up at me. I grabbed Kiki’s hand and pulled us out of the group. During this I didn’t see where I was going and I fell… right on top… of Riku. Kiki just stumbled out without even falling. I brushed the hair out of my face and looked down at Riku. I tried to get up but just got pulled back down; finally I realized that our belts were caught. We both looked down at our belts and hit our heads together.
“Ow, oh I’m so sorry Riku! Our belts are caught… here let me unhook them,” I said as I rubbed my throbbing head. ‘Oh!! I can’t believe this I’m on top of him! Great, well after this I guess I can talk to him about his secret. Ouch!! My finger is bleeding! Why the hell is my belt so sharp? Oh my god he’s bleeding!!’ I thought as I untangled my belt only to find a small growing blood stain on his shirt. “Riku you’re bleeding here I have a medicine kit in my backpack! Lift up your shirt so I can disinfect the cut,” I said as I took out my kit from my backpack and took out a bandage strip and a small bottle of alcohol.
“Ow, it stings! Kayu ow, ow! Not so tight!”
“Sorry Riku, there once, twice, three times… it’s all done clean and wrapped.”
“Why did you have a medical kit with you today? Not that I’m not grateful for it,” Riku said as he rubbed the cut while we were walking home together. Kiki’s mother came to pick her up after she called and told her what happened.
“Oh the kit, well this may sound silly but I’m learning on how to be a doctor!”
“No, not at all, I mean after all if you didn’t I’d probably be in the hospital or worse: the nurses’ office!” He said blushing; we laughed and talked for a few minutes. We got to the street where our paths split and I stopped walking. He asked me what was wrong and I told him I knew he was a werewolf and that I was a vampire. We talked about the magical world and the bounty hunter then went our separate ways.
“Mama, Daddy, Sufi? I’m home! Hello anyone there?! Well looks like I’m the only one up… again… geez oh man I got his blood on my shirt,” I put my backpack down and set my cell phone on the table and the second my finger lifted, it rang. “Huh? That’s weird… Hello? Oh hi Kiki what’s up? … No way are you serious?! Oh my god Kiki just stay there I’ll be right over!” I grabbed my backpack and ran out of the door.
A few minutes later I looked up, out of breath, in front of the hospital. “Kiki? What happened, where’s Riku?”
“Kayu you made it, Riku is about to go into surgery he was attacked by um… y-you know…” her voice trailed off which meant now the bounty hunters were after my friends.
“Riku… oh no wait s-surgery… no Kiki b-but that means t-they’ll find out…”
“I know Kayu b-but… what can we do to stop them w-we’re just ki—“
“No! We have to stop them Kiki if we don’t then we’ll risk the kingdom… I’m not going to take that risk, either you could help me or stay out of my way!” With that I ran down the hall and there I saw Riku being ran into the surgery room, “Wait!!”
“Huh? Hey what’s that girl doing in here? Hey someone ge—“
“D-doctor i-if I were you I w-would be q-quiet…” Riku stuttered quietly trying not to pass out or scream in pain.
“R-Riku don’t w-waste your e-energy p-please I can handle this j-just get some rest o-okay?” I choked out through sobs I wiped my eyes and cleared my throat. “Doctor please h-he doesn’t have insurance and he can’t pay for surgery please just let me take him home… please …” I looked down at Riku then back at the doctor. Using the mind blowing power of mind control that us vamps have, I convinced the good doc to hand him over.
“I guess he’s all yours but we’ll give you some equipment and such to take with you and you’ll be going in an ambulance right? Oh and it will all be free of charge I-I suppose...” As soon as the doctor said that Riku opened his eyes and held my hand.
“Riku… Oh um I won’t need the ambulance doctor, my friend’s mother is here so she’ll give us a ride thank you sir… so much!” I pushed Riku’s bed to the lobby. “Let’s go guys, to my house the doctor is going to put some stuff in the back of the car so lets hurry!”
Riku lay in the back seat with his head on my lap and I couldn’t look away from his sweet face for a single moment. He opened his eyes and looked up at me after a little bit and saw tears in my eyes. He wiped them off with his good hand and smiled at me. I smiled back, bent down and gently kissed his forehead. When I sat back up his eyes were closed and he had fallen back asleep.
“Riri, it’s going to be okay… you’re going to be okay. You hear me? I’m not going to let anything happen to you… I promise Riri. I swear.” I whispered with my lips on his hair.
Kiki’s mom dropped Riku and I off at my house and a few minutes later Kiki showed up with more bandages and some stuff to stitch him up along with some of his dad’s blood. “Hey Kayu um how do I do this uhhh Kayu?!”
“Oh Kiki! Give me that! Look here no, no here hand it over. See okay well get me the blood it’s on the table… Okay well then we’re done here. OK so I’m like exhausted hey can you watch over him so I can get a nap. Wake me up if he wakes up okay?”
“Right. Hey Kayu, what if your mom wakes up?”
“Oh no what if she does, what shall we ever do? She’s not gonna wake up! Duh vampires remember? Even so they like to sleep in… Oh and if you hear voices or noises from upstairs wake me up BEFORE they come downstairs okay? Otherwise Riku’s blood isn’t so safe.” And with that I jumped on the couch and fell fast asleep.
“G-g-great… well now what do I do… hey look she has a TV. Sweet. Now what channel? ... Huh? What the – uh oh this is sooo not good… Uhhh Kayu wake up… KYUSHU WAKE UP!!!!”
“WHAT KIKI?! Kiki… that’s not what I think it is, is it?”
‘In other news there has been a report of “magical” creatures. It seems that we have found one of their hideouts. It appears to be a home and at the moment is being surrounded,’ said a reporter for the channel 4 news. The screen showed a picture of a large brown house surrounded by trees. A house that looked like an exact replica of my house.
“I’m afraid so… now what? What if they come in? What are we going to do Kayu?”
“I don’t know… well there is one thing. We have to flee to the magical realm and fast. You take Riku, the portal is in the closet. I’ll close it off after I get everyone through. Go now!”
“Got it!” She took everything that the doctor gave us as well as everything else that resembled magic and put it in her bag. I ran upstairs and banged on every door and yelled that we had an emergency. Everyone immediately woke up and grabbed all magical items in their rooms. We ran into the closet and I closed the portal right before the police knocked down the front door.
“Ok Team 2 you look upstairs, Team 1 follow me! Team 3 check over there and Team 4 go upstairs with Team 2!” The Chief of Tokyo Police screamed as he entered the house. A few minutes later he shouted once more, “Damn we missed them!”
