Today and Tomorrow

This is a Together re-do. Again, I'm not about to miss any sleep researching for this story, so facts may be inaccurate. A day on Mars is 24 hours, though.

Anneslise. A fancy name, fit for some queen of the old, not a street-rat in an Innaca, a protected city on Mars. As weird as it is, Skie would fit into the rich category. Oh well, names are just names. Right?

Chapter 1

Annelise: Purple eyes

by: Dudete
I opened my eyes slowly, my hands holding on to the thin blanket that protected me, slightly, from the Mars chill. The faint red light meant is was cloudy. Like usual. I sat up, stuffing my blanket into a ragged bag that contained all my possessions. Not that there was much, just a change of clothes, a canteen, and the blanket. My stomach growled and I stood, not bothering to wake Missie or Jace up. They were sprawled out up on the rock ledge, saying it was safer to sleep there. Sleeping beside the door was good enough for me.
Not that there really was a doorway or anything. It was more of a sewer grill on the wall under a bridge. It wasn't used anymore, so except when it flooded, it was dry. Our weather making machines had had a mind of their own more a long time now, no one really remembered the last time we controlled what would happen.
But back to the present. I knelt beside it and pulled out a loose screw, making the whole thing fall in. Crawling out, I didn't bother fixing it. Jace or Missie would wake up and notice pretty soon. Time to get breakfast.
I walked down the street, running my fingers through my hair in an effort not to draw attention. A well-dressed gentleman walked ahead of me, wallet in hand. Big mistake. I ran ahead and "accidentally" bumped into him, knocking down both his cane and his wallet. Hiding my face and cursed distinctive purple eyes with my white-blond hair, I bent down to pick them up. I handed them back to him, but not before slipping most of his cash out of it. There was probably much more where that came from anyway. He scowled at me and snached it back, stuffing it into his pocket. I hurried away and into a side alley that was a shortcut to a bakery. After buying a crossant and some muffins, I got some milk and headed home. I poked the food in first, only to have it snagged out from my hand. Wriggling in, I scowled at Jace, who was already stuffing his face with a muffin.
" Lise, seriously. I've already told you that you can't keep showing yourself in public like that! If somebody sees your eyes, you're as good as caught," Missy scolded.
" Relax, no one'll see 'em!" I grinned, gulping down my share of the milk.
" And she had purple eyes!!" I heard a shout. I scampered to the grill and peered out.
The gentleman from earlier was talking on his holo phone, the hologram of a police officer drawing a portrait hovering in front of him.
" Hair?" the officer asked.
" Light blond, really long," the man tapped his wallet. " Took about five thousand. And an express first-class space-bus ticket to Earth. Do you know how much those cost?!"
" Calm down sir, we'll find her. She has no where to run, after all."
I scowled.
