Chapter One: Life on Earth

England

“Hurry up we are going to be late”, somewhere in Southampton, England, it’s 7:30 am and a family is rushing to pack for a cruise ship to America. “I’m coming, need to find my Nintendo”, Jack Dern shouted to his mum, he wasn’t looking for anything actually he was reading a book on dinosaurs, he loved them. With their jaws and claws sharp enough to rip flesh. He picked up the book and stuffed it in his bag before running downstairs. As he descended fresh air filled his lungs, his parents had already opened the front door and started to pack their bags into the car. Kayla, his sister was texting on her phone by the door; she was a bit unsociable at the bests of times, well unsociable with her family anyway. You never saw her without her phone, texting all the time.

Ten minutes later they all were in the car and on the way to the cruise ship. Kayla was on her phone, again. Jack’s father, Bill, was driving as fast as possible without breaking the speed limit, again. His mum, Caroline, was telling everyone what they would do on their cruise and when they got to America, again, while he, Jack, was reading his book on dinosaurs, again. A normal family car journey... again.

Japan

Josh had moved to Japan five years previous, he had met Jenna on a trip to Mount Fuji and married her one year later, now he worked in a skyscraper in the capital city, Tokyo. Like every day he had already got up and got dressed. The morning had been a blur. At lunch he had met up with some of his colleagues in the cafe, after that he had gone up to his office on the top floor of the building. Now Josh was working hard writing a project on continental drift. 3:30 came and passed. He was nearly finished.

“Josh, do you want a drink?” a colleague of his asked, bringing him out of his work world. He looked up and saw David, his best friend: “Nah, I’m nearly done”. Suddenly his screen died. The lights turned off. David ran to a window. He exclaimed in shock: “Oh my....” he didn’t continue. Josh was worried: “What is it? It’s just a power cut”. He saw more people go to the windows. “What is it?”He got up, moved to the window and looked down. In the streets below people were getting out of their parked cars, looking like ants from so far away. Josh didn’t understand what was wrong. Then he looked down the road, all the vehicles had stopped moving, every car, bus, train, lorry, truck, van....had stopped. This was more than a power cut.

The thing that really got you was the silence, no noise, no engines, nothing. Then like that the lights turned on and the silent city came to life once more. Josh went to his computer as people cheered. “Darn,” he muttered as he logged back in to his computer, “it didn’t save the project”.
England

4:00 am saw the Derns arriving at the port. As they parked, the news was on the radio: “...a power cut has just hit Tokyo and the surrounding area, but strangely the cars and trains were affected too. Even a plane was reported to have lost power completely for the brief minutes that the power cut lasted. Scientists are trying to work out what....”Caroline switched off the radio and got out of the car. Jack got out of the car too. It was a nice day, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. Actually they weren’t, he looked around and the normally bird filled trees were empty. Maybe they were hibernating or something, he thought.

The rest of his family didn’t seem to notice the bird’s disappearance, or they didn’t care. They got their bags and rushed towards the cruise ship. They waited by the sea to be allowed on the ship, the sea to their left. Jack looked into the water. Kayla appeared behind him: “Apparently sea creatures live in the depths of the sea, and they like to eat little boys” she did an impression of a sea creature eating something. Jack was slightly scared, but they would be safe on the ship. No sea creature could take it down, maybe one from millions of years ago but not now.

By 5:00 am they were on the ship. The family waved goodbye to England. Caroline and Kayla went shopping in the indoor mall, while Jack and his father went to their suite. Jack quickly got changed and went to bed. He was asleep in a second.

A sea monster met him in his dreams; it chased him through the water, its jaws ready to chop him to shreds. He woke with a start, got up and walked over to the window. All he could see was blue, blue and bluer blue. An endless sea of blue...nothing was in sight. This would be a long voyage.

Canada

She looked down her lens. She stayed absolutely still; no movement, not even daring to breath. The brown bear was twenty yards away. She pushed the button, the picture was taken. She put her camera away. She lay there watching the bear. Soon it walked away. She breathed out; she watched her breath drift away. It was 9:00 pm, and cold. She was very cold. Kasrin got up and walked through the dark forest, the tree’s towering above. They were kings of their land and she respected that. She almost tripped over a tree root. Her torch fell from her hand. She bent down searching for it.

Suddenly she heard footsteps. Kasrin got behind the nearest tree. A light beam shone at the trees behind her. The tree blocked the light leaving a shadow before her. The light moved. Then it vanished. Kasrin tried to hold her breath. It was silent; she dared to look around the edge of the tree. There was no one there. Phew. Her eyes suddenly saw movement and then the light beam was back and pointing at her. She was blinded. Kasrin backed away. But slipped and fell. “Kasrin...is that you?” a familiar voice said. She was shocked and surprised. It was Daniel. “Daniel, you gave me a fright there.” Her eyes adjusted and she saw Daniel holding two torches, one on, one off: “Sorry about that...is this your torch?” Kasrin looked and knew straight away it was hers. She walked over to him and he handed it to her. “Let’s go, it’s getting late” she said and headed for the centre.

Himalayas

It was 10:00am. Jerald worked with some of his close friends at an abandoned research centre. Well when they say work they mean do what they want. They research the mountains in great detail. Normally they do it only for a hobby, but sometimes when something interesting happens they stay there for a while. At the moment Jerald is checking some readings while Teresa is checking her book, George and Tom had gone to get some rock samples. “These readings are normal, this isn’t the most interesting day we have had...Teresa...” Teresa looked up from her book: “Sorry I was reading my book, did you hear the news apparently they had a power cut in Tokyo, and it knocked out the vehicles as well, weird huh”. Jerald looked back at his readings. He looked quickly at a camera and saw Tom and George coming in.

Tom handed Jerald the rock sample they had got. At that moment the room started to shake. “What is that?” Teresa cried. George falls back against a door; smashing it. The shelf collapses near Teresa, making her yelp. Jerald looks at the readings. According to them this is the biggest earthquake in known history.
