Chapter 1

Why Can't I Be a Normal Artist and Stalk my Subjects?

by: BakaGreen
No One's POV
Evangeline wiped her forehead with the back of her hand, stepping back to admire her painting. It wasn't much. Just a scenery picture that was required for her portfolio. It had the mountains in the background with a large green meadow in the foreground and a river up in front. It wasn't the best she had done, kind of straight forward, but okay.

She loved painting scenery or animals. It was the people she struggled with, "Evangeline?" she heard a voice call. It was Ms. Massey her art teacher. "It's time to leave are you finished?" she asked.

"Yeah," she called. She walked over the sink to wash out the brushes.

"This is nice, but don't you think that you should start on the painting for the competition?" Evangeline sighed. Ms. Massey had entered her into a prestigious art competition, one that would guarantee her entrance into almost any college she wanted. If she won that is.

Evangeline was President of the Art Club and painting was her life. She'd experimented with other mediums, pastel, sculpting, water color, but there was just something about oil painting that she loved. Don't get her wrong she liked charcoal sketches and drawings to, but she just loved the feel of the paintbrush in her hand mixing the colors and having that empty canvas in front of her just begging to have it come to life.

"I don't even know where to start," she said.

"The subject is people, you couldn't get much broader," she sighed as she rinsed out her paintbrush. "You could paint one of your friends," the teacher suggested. "Didn't you start on one of Anna? Also that portrait of Josh?" she asked thinking of the drawings that I convinced them to sit still for.

"I know, but every time I try one of them the drawing just turns out flat," she said. "There's nothing special just a portrait. It makes me feel like one those artists they commissioned for royal paintings," she said drying the brushes putting them back in the right spot.

"Think about it overnight, but you need to get started soon," she nodded as she washed her hands, though the attempt was futile, her hands were stained the color of the river. A perfect mixture of indigo, light blue, gray, white and the secret to perfection: a hint of green.

Evangeline put on her messenger bag thinking about what she could do. She could sit down in the middle of the park on a sunny day maybe. It was people after all. She was biting her lip walking slowly, contemplating her painting, when she heard shouting. She walked outside and saw the principal talking to a boy.

He was in a couple of her classes, his name was Levi Owens. Classic bad boy, he was constantly getting sent out of classes. Then she saw it, a cigarette on the ground. She chuckled to herself, he probably went outside for a smoke during detention.

She paid no attention to their voices, studying Levi. He had the type of face most artists would like to draw. Strong jawline, deep set eyes, nose that was proportional, if not broken (most likely from having it broken in one of his countless fights) and the scar on his skin added the perfect touch of imperfection. You couldn't tell right now but he had this smirk, really a crooked grin that you couldn't help but smile at.

Right then Evangeline knew she had to draw him. Her hand itched to hold a piece of charcoal and have her sketchbook. "Mr. Owens I don't have any choice but to suspend you," then he did his smirk. She couldn't control herself; her need to draw him came over her.

"Wait! Mr. Conner," Evangeline shouted running over.

"Ms. Willis cans this wait?" he asked looking quite annoyed.

"Mr. Conner I assure you this is relevant. I need a subject for my painting, for the art completion," She told him probably talking to fast. She pushed her paint splattered glasses up her nose.

"I don't see how this is relevant," he says looking extremely annoyed, but trying to be patient with her. Being president of the art club and in all honor classes had its high point. Evangeline thought about it, just because she needed a subject doesn't mean he won't suspend him. "Community service," she sputtered out. "Community service, well it would be more like school service, but still," She felt her face turn vermillion. She coudn't believe this, all she wanted to do was retreat. Why can't I be a normal artist and stalk my subjects? Evangeline thought to herself.

"Get to the point," he said clearly getting annoyed, apparently all of his special student patience got used up.

"He could help out in the art room and like I said before I need a subject," she told him looking hopeful. Levi was chuckling and rolling his eyes and Evangeline would have given him a scowl if she wasn't trying to portray an innocent look.

"Let me get this straight you want him to clean paintbrushes and model," the principal said. Evangeline nodded, hoping he would agree. He muttered something along the lines of, 'hormone-crazed teenagers,''.

"It would be something he doesn’t' like to do. I mean come on he probably wants to get suspended so he can miss school," She says looking him up and down.

"Will you stop talking about me like I'm not here," he says, looking at me. Her cheeks turn red again as she looks at the ground.

"Plus I'm in the art room all the time. In the mornings when I can be, at lunch, after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sometimes Mondays and Fridays too," Evangeline told him.

"Fine, but one slip up from either of you and you'll both get suspended," her face dropped. "Yes you heard me suspended. I don't need you interfering Ms. Willis, but I do think that it will be good for the both of you," he said looking at the two of them, before walking away.

"Who do you think you are?" he shouted at me.

"Evangeline Willis, nice to meet you," she says sticking out my hand. He looks at her, scowling.
"I don't need your help. I don't need anyone's help, you hear?" he asks. She stood her ground.

"I thought you would be happy," she said simply.

"Why would I be happy? Some nerdy girl interferes with my buisness and..."

"And what? Bails you out so you aren't suspended from school, what's so bad about that?" She asks, he just shakes his head and walks muttering something. "See you tomorrow at lunch!" she shout after him. He raises his hand, but I don't think he's waving to say goodbye.
