Chapter 1

Welcome Back

"Alex!" Screamed my mother, "You're going to be late for school!"
This was just another day for me. I don't usually sleep in, but I was up until midnight studying for my chemistry test. My alarm clock was shouting at me just as my mom was. It was already 7:30 AM and I had to be at school by eight. The problem was, my red hair was in knots, I was still wearing pajamas, and my stomach wouldn't shut up until I satisfy it with some food.
I leaped out of my bed and shoved on a shirt. My frenzy continued as I sprinted down the stairs with my jeans only on one leg and my stomach still whining for breakfast. When I reached the kitchen, I ran hastily to the toaster and caught the frozen waffles just as they popped out. I squished them into my mouth and chewed while grabbing my backpack and putting on my boots. Once I was decent, I stumbled out of my door and into the driveway.
My mom already started the car and was threatening to leave without me. This was one of the few moments that I wished I had an older brother or sister. They could drive me around when mom has to go to the clinic early or something like that. But, there's no time for fantasizing right now, I got a school to get to. I dived into the Honda, shoved on my seat belt, and slammed my car door. My mom floored the gas pedal and passed every car on the highway. We arrived at Eastwood Middle school, pulling up to a mosh pit of cars and students. Outside waiting for me was my best friend, Jocelyn.
Okay, so I should probably explain about myself. Since I was stuck in a morning rush, I didn't have any time to chat. So, hi, my name is Alexandria Baker, but just call me Alex. I'm fourteen, tall for my age and skirts are like poison to me. Now,a bit about my best friend. We are almost exact opposites. She loves skirts, classes are boring, and boys are her world. She's like a stereotypical girly girl. Why are we best friends you ask? Because we keep each balanced.
"Hey Lexi!" Jocelyn squealed. She was smiling and hopping like crazy in her short skirt and tank top. Her curly brown was being whipped back and forth. To answer your question, yes, Joc is insane. My mom let me out of the car and I gave her a hug. It was the first day after my family reunion and the first day of October, so Jocelyn was pumped to see me again. I waved goodbye and my mom drove off.
"Hey, you know I hate being called Lexi! It's Alex Joc. Oh, I can't get mad, I missed you too much!" I also squealed. We squeezed each other to death until we couldn't breathe.
"I know. You're cute when you're mad!" I hit her friendly in the back. We both grinned. "But I missed you too. How was the trip?"
"Don't ask. My family is like a herd of man eating dinosaurs." I joked.
"Haha, yeah I guess so." She looked at me from head to toe and scoffed.
"What?" I asked.
"That's what you're wearing if you wanna impress Dann-"
"Shhh." I interrupted. "Can the lady in the mini skirt shut up about the red head's personal feelings." I mocked. She pretended to zip her lips and throw out the key. We interlocked arms and skipped to the main building past the bulletin board. We went inside of the halls and went to our lockers. Luckily, they were right next to each other, so we got to gab like any other student between classes. I dialed in my combination and pulled out my history book. Now, back to what Joc was trying to say. So, there's this guy in my English class named Danny. I swear, that boy is a god. His hair is a gorgeous mocha brown and his eyes are like sapphires. Best of all, he's really romantic and a poet! I wish he would talk to me, but he usually doesn't. Without even noticing, I realized that I was already in my history class. You can see how amazing a thirteen year old girl's mind is. I passed the first row and sat in the desk on the edge, right next to Katie, in front of Cameron, and in the back of Judy, the most studious person I know. From my book bag, I pulled out my history book and sketch pad. Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved to draw, but my art skills have improved from crayons on the walls to realistic portraits. With my pencil, I started to draw swift strands of hair which would soon become the face of Penelope Littlefield. She was the most beautiful and most popular girl at school. I had a feeling that she liked Danny too, so you can fill in the blanks. I hated every single part of her, so whenever I draw her, I usually make her a demon or a disgusting creature. Later when I look back at them, I can laugh my you know what off. When I just started to put warts on her, Mr. Nickelson walked inside. I couldn't understand how he could carry around his big bald head, bushy mustache, and his gigantic belly. There are some things that the world will never know.
"Good morning class." He said while placing his cup of coffee on his desk.
"Good morning Mr. Nickelson." The class murmured.
"Today we are going to continue our study on ancient Greece." He turned around and started to write funny names on the board with a squeaky marker. The names that he wrote were "Zeus", "Hera", "Aphrodite", and "Athena". He turned back around and faced the class.
"Can anyone tell me how these names are significant to Greece?" He said. Judy's hand shot into the air like a rocket and swished around the classroom.
"Yes, Judy?" He said strangely.
"They are four of the Greek gods in Greek mythology!' She replied happily.
"Yes, now-" But Judy continued.
"Zeus is the king of the gods. Hera is Zeus's wife and the goddess of women and marriage. Aphrodite is the goddess of love and Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war, both of them are Zeus's daughters." She smiled like she was very proud of saying all of that in one breath. I stared with my mouth wide open. I learned a bit about Greek mythology but not enough to memorize it like that.
Mr. Nickelson was astonished, "Thank you Judy. Would you care to tell us how these gods are different from usual gods?" He sat down and just listened.
"Yes, Mr. Nickelson, I would." She inhaled and exhaled, and then began her lecture.
"Unlike usual gods, Greek gods and goddesses possess human qualities and are not like perfect beings. They too, like us, feel jealous and do wrong things. They are not saints." That was the only part of the class that I could remember. All I know is that Judy taught the class for the rest of the period and Mr. Nickelson just kicked back. As much as I tried to scribble down what she was saying, I just couldn't because she had a bit of a lisp. She even assigned us a homework project due on Thursday. Now I wished that I had payed attention. We have to make a family tree of the Greek gods and goddesses with a description. Perfect, even more on my mind. Things have just been kind of hard lately. My dad has been on a business trip for a month now. Sometimes I'm not even sure if he's going to come back. Like listening to heaven, I heard the bell ring. I shoved the bulging book into my bag and continued to my locker again. Jocelyn met me there and she did not look to happy.
"Hey, how was math class?" I asked. She just frowned at me.
"Suckish. Mrs. Trusdale doesn't make things easier to understand." She whined.
"Then maybe you should actually pay attention and then it'll make more sense." I murmured irritably. I hate it when she whines about being lazy.
"What did you say?" She questioned.
"Oh, nothing." Thank god she didn't hear that. "You look like you got something on your mind. Got another exam?"
"Oh, no. It's kinda personal. Something happened last period, I need to tell someone something, but I'm not sure how to say it." She sounded pretty serious.
"Well, just tell him or her the next time you see them. You can get it off your chest and then move on with your day." I replied.
"Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks Lexi." I folded my arms. "Alex" She corrected.
"Thank you. What's next?"
"English." She said.
"Yes!" I cheered while fist pumping. "I get to be with you and, well you know." My eyes drifted to a dreamy wonderland where I was prancing with Danny in a field of marshmallows.
"Umm, yeah, cool." She paused.
"You wanna walk?" I asked while holding out my arm. She hesitated but then gladly took it.
"With pleasure." She said while smiling again. I wonder what this whole secret telling business is. Well, it's best not to think about it. Besides, she'll tell me at lunch anyway.
