Chapter I

It was 6:20 AM when I woke up on April 6th. "Violet! WAKE UP! YOU HAVE TO GET READY TO GO TO SARAH'S HOUSE!" my mean aunt Rosaline shouted. I groaned. I had almost forgotten that I had to leave for Aunt Rosaline's cousin, Sarah's house for the rest of the year.

Sarah was a lot younger than Aunt Rosaline. Like, only 20 years old, while Aunt Rosaline was 36 years old. I liked Sarah, she was nice. A lot nicer than Aunt Rosaline. Sarah let me do whatever I wanted, and she wouldn't complain about it. You could say she sorta spoils me, but that's just because she's seen the way Aunt Rosaline is toward me. And Sarah doesn't like it, not one bit.

I got out of bed and did my morning chores. One good thing about this trip, I wouldn't have to deal with Aunt Rosaline's attitudes. Another good thing, is that I'll be spending the whole rest of the year of fun with Sarah. One last good thing, NO SCHOOL!!!

Sarah can't really afford to register me in a school, so she just lets me do all kinds of research at the library close to her house.

I've visited Sarah before, I always stayed with her every summer. Sometimes, her friends would come over, and Sarah never minded me talking to them. So, you see, hanging out with Sarah for the whole year is a pretty awesome idea.

Aunt Rosaline was going to spend her year doing a lot running around, going to work, and doing stuff around the house. She told me she needed a year-long teen-free holiday, and that was just fine with me.

After doing my morning chores, I grabbed all of my luggage that I had packed last night, and went downstairs for breakfast. Aunt Rosaline was putting her dishes in the sink. I figured she had already eaten breakfast.

She glanced at me. "When are you changing your style?" she said snootily, rolling her eyes. "I can wear whatever I want, Aunt Rosaline. You know that." I replied coldly. Although, I didn't really mean to say it in that tone of voice. What she had said to me a minute ago, it made me mad, and I tried to control it but was unsuccessful.

She glared at me, and fast as lightning, she slapped me across the face, hard. I felt the sting on my cheek where she had slapped me. She's slapped me a billion times ever since she took me in when I was 8, after my parents' death in a car crash. Let me tell you, that is torture, being abused by your aunt. She never really liked kids anyway.

I spotted one of my hair bands on the table and put my hair up in a high pony-tail. I then grabbed a small plate and grabbed a chocolate chip muffin, and started eating.

"Sarah's going to be here in 5 minutes, so hurry up." Aunt Rosaline told me. "Whatever." I muttered as I turned on the TV. She headed upstairs, but as she passed, she gave me a smack at the back of my head. When her back was turned, I gave her a very ugly glare. I hated her so much. Like I said, I was glad that I would be staying with Sarah for the year.

I finished my muffin, tossed the plate into the sink (I hope it cracked), grabbed my luggage, and headed out the front door to wait for Sarah. I didn't even say goodbye to Aunt Rosaline, who would want to anyway, since she's so mean.

I spotted Sarah's yellow Hummer coming down the road as I jogged down the driveway to meet her.

She pulled over and rolled down the window. "Hop on in, Vi." she said, smiling. "The bus is leaving."

I laughed, tossing my things into the backseat. "More like the Hummer is leaving." I said. She laughed, "That, too." I smiled, climbing into the passenger seat. "How are you doin', kiddo?" she asked, driving into the driveway, pulling back out and heading out of the neighborhood.

I nodded. "Fine. Though, my cheek is still burning from when Aunt Rosaline slapped me." I told her, rubbing my still sore cheek. "She slapped you? Why?" she asked, a bit surprised. Apparently, she had thought that her older sister would never slap anyone. Now she was probably thinking that she was wrong.

"I just replied to her question about my style, and she slapped me." I said. "What did she ask?" Sarah asked. " 'When are you ever going to change your style?' " I said, immitating Aunt Rosaline.

Sarah laughed softly. "And then I said, 'I can wear whatever I want. You know that.' And then she just slapped me." I continued. Sarah shook her head, still smiling. "Well, I guess you're just lucky that you'll be staying with me for the year." she said, turning to me.

"Yep." I replied, popping the P.

A few minutes past of silence. Then Sarah said, "I'm gonna stop by Starbucks. You want anything?"

I put on a Scotland accent, and replied, "I'll have a cup of Decaf Mocha, a chocolate biscotti with chocolate icing, a chocolate chip cookie, and a chocolate milk."

Sarah laughed, and I smiled, laughing with my mouth closed. "No, I'll just take the decaf mocha." I told her.

She shook her head at me, smiling. "You are one, silly geek." she said. "Thank you." I said. "As I have told people many times, I'm not a dork, I'm not a nerd, I'm a geek. And proud of it."

Sarah laughed again. I knew that this year was going to be a whole lotta fun.
