While it may seem scary to talk to your mom about your pregnancy, you can prepare for how she might react and anticipate what her response might be — and that can make breaking the news a bit easier. Practice what to say in advance, and think about how you’re going to answer the questions she is likely to ask. Pick a calm time to talk to your mom — maybe schedule a time with her, telling her that you need to talk. Make sure your mom knows how you’re feeling about it.

Some people find it easier to first talk to another adult they trust, like a counselor or another relative. That way you can practice what you’re going to say to your mom, and if you feel it would help you, maybe even ask the person to come with you when you speak to her. Your mom will probably have all sorts of feelings about your being pregnant. No doubt you do, too. But don’t put off telling her. It’s best to reveal the news as soon as possible.
