Chapter1- Elena Remembers

by: Rae_la
“Elena Gilbert as Homecoming Queen!” The person with the microphone announced.
Elena gave the folks around her a smile. She hadn’t wanted to be the Queen of Homecoming. Too much had already been happening to her in her personal life, she wasn’t quite sure she could do this without Stefan here at the moment.
She was stuck with Stefan’s older brother, Damon. It’d been over the summer and Stefan made a bargain with Klaus-and ancient hybrid; Vampire and Werewolf. Stefan would join Klaus’s side to keep his brother, Damon safe and alive of a werewolf bite. The only cure? Damon needed to drink Klaus’s blood to heal him. The last Elena had see Stefan had been on the preparation for the senior prank night. It’d been the night Elena didn’t want to remember.

Elena stood alone in the empty gymnasiam, her eyes on Stefan. She was scared. Of what would happen… to her? To him? Stefan still had his human emotions on, that’s for sure. He was looking at her with eyes full of regret and pain… She could see it.
“Well, well a reunting for you both now?!” a voice in an English accent startled Elena. “Now, I like this… My ‘undead’ Doppelganger and my emotional rippah.”
Klaus stood behind Elena, so close that he could just bite her neck like he had on that night of the ritual. But he didn’t lay a tooth on her. What was he up to?
“Rebekah?” He called out. “Please take the Doppelganger’s friends out. I would really like to reunite with Elena.”
His beautiful blonde sister obeyed, but she had wanted to see the Doppelganger first before she left. Rebekah moved towards Elena, studying her a bit.
“So you’re the new Doppelganger?” Rebekah questioned. “You’re pretty, but the Original on was much prettier.”
Elena listened to the laughs of the Originals; Klaus and Rebekah. She focused on the regretful Stefan, who lowered his eyes to the ground. Elena listened to Rebekah, who moved away from her and to her friends, Bonnie and Matt. Their screams and shouts of mercy echoing in the darkened gym. Don’t be afraid, screamed Stefan’s dark green eyes. Then the slam of the gym door echoed through the gym. One human Doppelganger against two strong vampires in a gymnasiam… This was going to be interesting.
“Elena, I recall the previous time we met, you died in my arms that night,” Klaus’ eyes flickered to the weary Stefan. “Now, I know why you’re still here…”
Silence held the three together as they stood in order. Stefan, Elena, then lastly, Klaus.
“Stefan,” Klaus called Stefan’s attention back from Elena. “Whatever the bargain, comes with a price.”
A smirk appeared on Klaus’s handsome face. “You have five minutes.”
With that, Klaus turned on his heels and walked toward the doors of the gym. A third slam of that day echoed through the gym, leaving Stefan and Elena alone together.
“What’s going on, Stefan?” Elena asked him frightfully.
She watched him raise those familiar eyes up to meet her brown eyes. He only stood a few feet away from her; as if he were afraid something bad would happen to her.
“Do you remember, when we found that loop hole around the ritual that summer?” Stefan asked her softly. “He knows, that we found that.”
Elena listened closely to every word that came out of his mouth. She thought they were careful; careful enough.
“You were supposed to die that night, Elena,” Stefan went on. “And Klaus is angry that he can’t create new hybrids because you aren’t dead.”
“What’re you trying to stay, Stefan?”
Stefan pointed to the ticking timer on the basketball scoreboard. “I’m saying that by the time that timer is finished, I’ll have to kill you. Drink from you until you’re dead.”
“Fight against it,” Elena begged. “I know you can.”
“Why? Because I love you?”
“Damn right, Stefan!” Elena exclaimed angrily. “Because you loved me. I’ve spent the other half of my summer looking for you because I love you, Stefan.”
The five minutes ticked by quicker than they both though it’d be. The sound of the gym door opened and they both; Stefan and Elena, closed their eyes-afraid of what they knew was going to happen.
“Stefan?” Klaus called out as he walked back to the pair on the Mystic Falls Timberwolf drawing. “What’s taking so long?”
Stefan and Elena opened their eyes to look at each other. Fright and Heart Break throbbing through their minds. I can’t do it, Stefan thought He couldn’t do it. He can’t do it… I love her…. Then that was when the Ancient vampire saw…
Klaus stepped forward…
Placed his hands on Stefan’s broad shoulders…
“Stefan, you’re emotions for this human is nothing. You are a vampire,” Klaus reminded his fellow Ripper. “I want you, to turn off your emotions for her and do what you have to do.” Klaus’s dark pupils dialated with his done deal of compulsion. “Kill the doppelganger.”
Compulsion… Elena realized. He can’t control himself anymore. She had to run, get away. It was the most instinctive thing for a girl like her to do.
RUN, she thought.
Stefan was gone. Her Stefan wasn’t here anymore. The flashes of the older memories flashed behind her eyes. Stefan hugging her, kissing her, touching her…
Then suddenly.
A pounding on the school lockers caused Elena to turn her head to look behind her. A terrifying Stefan trying to hold himself against the compulsion Klaus had given him. He was fighting, Elena realized. He could do it. Stefan could do it! Tears escaped Elena’s eyes as the continuation of the locker pounding continued.
A wall came into view. That was the end of that hallway… This was it. This was Elena’s end. She was going to die… She stood in the empty, darkened hallway as the scary looking Stefan sauntered toward her. No emotion in his face or actions. Stefan was gone…
Then in a flash,
Stefan bit his teeth into her neck,
A scream and cry from her…
And nothing more…
Klaus had won…

Present Day
Elena closed her eyes as the memory played over in her mind. She had fnally stepped onto the stage with the gleaming spotlight on her. The crown she felt, layed on her set of curls and her smile on her face. Elena opened her eyes to find everyone clapping, a smile on their very own faces.
She spotted her friends; Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood, Matt and Bonnie… And her younger brother, Jeremy. Her eyes landed to the back where she founded her knight in shining armor. The one who came to her aid at the last moment… But Elena forgave him.
Damon.
He gave her that familiar mischevious smile, causing her to laugh softly.

It’d been when he came back from his horrible escape with Katherine. Damon had heard from Barbie- Caroline- about what had happened to Elena…
It was his fault for leaving her alone. If only he stayed to protect her…
Damon stood at the doorway of Elena’s hospital room. He’d compelled the secretary to release Elena from the Hospital so he could take her back to his place. He frowned as he bit his bottom lip. What in the world was he thinking leaving Elena alone? For just a day… And she was caught in trouble.
Damon stepped forward into her room, undoing the nasty little cords and needles attatched to her. In a blink, he sat on the chair next to her bed, eyes slowly opening at the feel of the breeze he had been creating.
“Damon?” She seemed to croak.
“I promise to never leave you again,” he promised her softly.
All she did was give him a soft nod and lifted her out of the bed. Elena was going home.

When her eyes finally opened, tears instantly poured out from her brown eyes. Damon watched as Elena moved steadily down the stairs and wrapped the thick, wool blanket over her shoulders. They both took a seat on the couches in the Library of The Salvatore Boarding house. He watched her weep even more as her hands seemed to cover her face. What could he do or say? He had never been in her postion… But maybe…
Damon poured some of the scotch into a crystal cup. Only a little, not a whole lot like he usually did for himself.
“Here, drink this,” He said gently, watching her take a sip of the scotch and wincing. “Yeah, careful… It’s strong… But it’ll help you forget.”
She nodded gently, gripping onto the cup. Then he though of something other than drinking down your sorrows. Compelling her to forget what his wretched brother had down to her…. It might work…
”I can help you forget,” He said.
This time, she shook her head.
“No, I don’t want to forget this,” Elena said as strong as she could. “He’s gone, Damon. He truly is gone. You didn’t see him… He couldn’t control himself and…”
Damon looked down in regret as she went on. God, he was definitely an idiot for leaving her alone.
“Where were your, Damon?” Elena cried as tears poured our from her eyes. “Why weren’t you here?”
He pulled her close, hugging her tightly. Not too tightly so that he could break her bones… But enough so that she comfort.
“I won’t ever leave your side again,” he whispered. “Ever.”
Present Day
Elena smiled at Damon as he smiled back.
”Body Guard,” He mouthed.
She had to laugh. Then, a figure in the very back of the crowd-even where Damon hadn’t known-stood Stefan. He gave her an apologetic smile. Maybe Elena might learn to forgive him once again….
