Three Red Lines (32)

We were staring at each other, making eye contact. Then, Shelly started smiling. But not like a happy smile. One of her not-so-friendly smiles.
"Clark was right."
"Right about what?"
"You are worthless. You do the things that you do to make people feel sorry for you." With that, she turned and left. I washed my mouth out so Travis wouldn't suspect anything.
"Hey what took so long?" I thought of a lie to tell him.
"Trouble with the dress." He nodded and continued talking with his friend. Soon, people started making their way to the dance floor. The music was fast and loud.
"Want to dance?"
"Um, sure." Travis and I walked over to where every one else was. "I'm not the greatest at dancing. Just saying."
He just laughed. "It doesn't matter. I don't think anybody here can." I looked around at the people. Most of the girls were dancing innapropriately.
We danced for a long time. They started to play a slow song, and everyone turned to their date and got all serious. Travis rest his hands on my back. I wrapped my arms around is neck and smiled at him.
"You look amazing tonight." Hearing him say that made me think of earlier in the bathroom. I hated the way I felt after that. "And I think you're dancing is perfectly fine."
"Thank you." I put my head against his chest. "You're not too bad yourself." He laughed quietly to himself. We stayed silent for the rest of the song.
Our principal walked to the stage to announce the prom king and queen. He brought all the nominees up with him. I noticed that Emily was up there. And so was Shelly.
He gave some pointless speech about the crowning, and pulled an envelope out of his coat.
"And your prom king is..." He read the card from the envelope. "Andrew Fletcher." I watched as he recieved his crown. "Now, for prom queen.... Emily McCormick." Emily and Drew walked to the centre of the dance floor and began to dance. I thought about how cute they looked together.
After a few more dances, the prom ended.
"Did you have fun tonight?"
"Yes. I had a lot of fun."
"Good." He pulled out of the venue and drove. "So I have plans for us for this week. Since it's spring break."
"What are we doing?"
"My grandparents have a shore house down in New Jersey. I thought it would be fun if you and me went there for a few days."
"But we're in Canada, how are we getting there?"
"We're driving down tomorrow afternoon. So you should probably pack stuff tomorrow morning."
"Alright then." His spontaneousness didn't surprise me. "I can't wait."
Travis dropped me off at home, and left. Clark wasn't home yet. I figured he and Shelly went to an after party or got a hotel room. I got out of my dress and undid my hair.
Prom was amazing.
