Chapter 1

by: rayel
My story is completely the truth (unfortunately) as I saw it. I can’t tell you my name so I will use the pseudonym: Skylar Glen. As you will soon discover I am the main character: Skylar Glen; we are the same person. My story is not for the faint hearted, I won’t hold anything back no matter the content. I’m not any old story teller, I’m quite odd actually or so I am always told. I tend to get off topic easily, as you will see if you continue reading, when I do that in this book it may or may not be for your own benefit, but I figured I would warn you. Maybe the beginning of my book will seem boring, sorry; I had to start where I did for anything else to make sense. So enough delaying let me take you back to when it all started…..
Tik-Tok, Tik-Tok… I have my back to the wall and I am staring at the clock (in case you were wondering it‘s 10:06 a.m.), Tik-Tok, Tik-Tok… I am currently in school sitting at my desk in the far corner of the room; I am the only one in the class without someone sitting next to me… Of course. My teacher, Mr. Hannah, is in the front of the room pacing and talking about photosynthesis. I’m naturally not listening to a single thing he says. 6th grade is so easy and boring, I think to myself for the millionth time this year; I want to learn something new and difficult. So instead of trying to struggle through and pay attention I let my eyes drift, taking in my classmates. We are a small class of 24 kids nothing special just the average group. None of these kids really like me, though I never did anything to them, then again no one in this school really likes me. Not that I don’t try, I just sort of have a loner personality and I always have even before….. Never mind I’m doing my best to keep the mood light for you and I don’t want to drop my life story on you quite yet…. So back to my story (after this chapter you’ll have to deal with the facts no matter how depressing). I don’t have any friends so that is not why I’m carefully scanning my classmates and I’m not looking for more information on my classmates, I know more about them then they probably know about themselves. Hey, did you ever notice how much you can pick up about people when no one cares about you? Uh-oh off topic again aren’t I, sorry, but I did warn you, I’ll try harder to keep on the subject though. Anyway the reason I was scanning my classmates was because just this morning we had gotten a new student. Now you might be scratching your head thinking, well what’s the big deal classrooms get new students all the time. I’ll take the liberty of answering that, of course classrooms get new students, but not at the end of May! Wait you’re saying I didn’t mention it was May yet? Sorry point taken. And I know I went off topic, you don’t have to remind me, that time I did it on purpose. So I was on high alert, I guess you say my spidey senses were tingling. I scan my class mates looking for the new boy. Oops let me make a correction to my former writing. I am one of the only two people in the class with out someone sitting next to them. The new boy, Alex, is sitting alone, and listening attentively to the teacher. I examine him closely looking for any sign of danger. All I come up with is a normal black spiky hair, green eyed boy. I’m guessing now you probably want a description of me, and your thinking I would never give that to you if I wouldn’t even give you my name. I will tell you what I look like because I am as average as it gets: I have plain brown hair usually in a pony tail, no braces or glasses, never any jewelry other than a watch, and blue eyes. Exciting right? Anyway, as I’m examining Alex my teacher, Mr. Hannah, walks toward me. He doesn’t like me and I turn don’t like him. He dislikes me because I don’t pay attention to his lessons, but can still answer all the questions thrown at me. I dislike him because he questions me and is always trying to catch me asleep… It never happens. I can see Mr. Hannah and turn around ready for our game of Jeopardy. “So Skylar Glen I see you’re not paying attention again.” He says to me clearly agitated. “No sir Mr. Hannah, I’m paying full attention would you like to test me to check?” I answer in a sweet little innocent voice. Mr. Hannah glares for a second then gets a mischievous grin on his face and says “Fine then Skylar, what two raw materials does a plant need-?” I cut him off before he can finish “Carbon Dioxide and water.” Mr. Hannah’s grin fades “We didn’t even read that part in the book yet. How did you know that?” I think on my feet (that’s just a figure of speech, I was actually sitting down) “I’m sorry Mr. Hannah I’m a fast reader and I finished the chapter already.” He looks at me checking to see if I’m lying but of course he can’t tell as I am an expert liar. “Fine.” He sighs, walking away. As he has his back turned I quickly grab my Science book from my stuff and wonder to myself, what page are we on anyway?
* * *
It is now almost the end of the period (I left out most of the period because nothing important happened) and Mr. Hannah is done teaching. He tells us to sit and be quiet, which in kid speak = time to chat with friends. So as everyone talks amongst themselves, since have no friends I decide to read. As I am reading I hear someone clear their throat. I look up to see Alex the new boy standing there awkwardly. “Uh, Skylar right?” He asks me. I nod “And you’re Alex right?” He too nods then opens his mouth to say something but is interrupted by a blaring bell. “Oh I’m guessing that’s the bell for next period?” He says yelling over the noise. Everyone else is grabbing their stuff to head for the door, but suddenly Mr. Hannah is in the doorway blocking them from leaving. I check my watch, the bell is 3 minutes early, hmmm...Then the bell stops and is followed by three tweets of a bird. My heart stops in my throat, that is the sign for a birdcage! Mr. Hannah starts pushing us towards the safe spot and everyone looks terrified. I’m not scared at all in fact I’m strangely calm this is what I was trained for (don’t worry I’ll explain in the next chapter). Mr. Hannah obviously is flustered and as terrified as the students are, I can almost understand why. Over the past week, all the middle schools in my town (no I can’t tell you my town that would give me away) had been invaded by intruders kidnapping one or two students. The intruders and the captives were never found. Mr. Hannah scrambles to lock the door, but he is not fast enough. As he is about to lock the door it flies open, throwing him back against the wall…. Hard.
