Chapter 1

The fox at sunrise

by: Adalwulfa
Malicoy charged through the rain as fire licked at his flanks. He kicked the large badger off him as he spun through the air, a majestic sight indeed. His flame red fur rippled in the fires light. His paws looked dipped in black. His perfectly pointed snout shot through the air and his enormous tail flew behind him. The rain shot threw the fire and stung his eyes. The fire burned. Steam and smoke made him blinded to the scene. But he knew the cub was there! A weird connnection between him and that cub was always there. For the tenth time in that week, the cub fell from the cliff dotted with cougars. Mailcoy caught the it!
"Malicoy, Get ready for the biggest adventure in your life. I'll see you again, soon! And dont eat the red...." Then Malicoy woke up in the smoke smelling den, with small droplets of water landing on his nose.... Stupid dream.... again.
He climbed out of the opening and shook his fur. Don't eat the red what?! He shook off again and stretched. Down by the river as little minnows swam under his nose, the water felt very cold against his teeth. A little ways up the stream, a racoon was washing off a fish. A pile of a few other dead fish lay near him. Breakfast. He trotted up to the racoon, and told him, "Is that bear, right there beyond that mound of dirt? It looks like a cub! Oooh no! That means mamma bear is near by, she'll probably be hungry. Let me hide these excess fish for you, good sir?"
The racoon looked scared and peared over the mound of dirt.
"Very well then, but make haste! I didn't see a bear!" The racoon said shaking.
"He's there.... Just keep looking" Malicoy said softly, as though he was scared too. About fifty or so yards away, Mailicoy ate the rest of the fish and buried the bones. Then he traveled up river to wash his snout. The sun was almost all the way up by now, and he felt like moving today. Foxes don't especially like staying in one den. An old badger den here, a rabbit hole there, they moved quite a bit. He yawned and thought out loud, "...The red whats?!" Quite a question to ponder, if I do say so my self. As silent as wind, Malicoy swept across the path, occasionaly moving off of the trail and circling around. The raccon would get lost trying to find him. He was deep in thought, when a smooth but strangely sly voice said, "The red whats?" He looked up and his jaw dropped open, to see the most beautiful fox he had ever seen. (At this point, like most males when they see a gorgeous woman, they babble like an idiot)
"Where the red fern grows, the red... the red... the red what?" He asked, stupified.
"I hate it when people answer a question, with a question!" The she-fox answered.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" (WOW! He thought- this time not out loud)
Her amber green eyes looked up at him cooly. Her snout was pointed expertly. Her tail was big and fluffy. One paw of hers, was pitch black. The others were all white. Her ears were tipped with night-sky jet black..
"Are you done staring yet?" She asked, amused.
"I was staring?" He asked, empty headly.
She gave him a "Another question answered with a question" look.
"oh, right, sorry. What's your name?"
"my name is Frili, but call me Foxy. Whats yours?"
"Malicoy..... I think..." He said, quite unsure at the moment.
"well, okay Mr. Malicoy Ithink. Would you mind showing me to breakfast? I'm famished, you know!"
He nodded, not speaking in fear he would make himself look like a fool even more. He decided he would show her some of his greatest berry bushes, and maybe show her a field that always had at least three fat mice in easy reach.
After breakfast, they were sunbathing on a large rock, a familiar face peered over it and his eyes narrowed at Malicoy.
"There wasn't a blasted bear in sight! You... You... You scaly tongued, smooth snouted liar!!! You lied to me! You nasty fox!" The racoon seemed quite mad, as you can imagine.
"When was this? Last week? You sure took long enough to find us!" Snapped Foxy. Malicoy snickered. The racoon remained speechless for quite some time.
"You owe me several fish!" He finally said. (There is a lovely little pattern here, at this point. First Malicoy speaks and says NO, then the racoon. Until Foxy speaks)
"No"
"Yes"
"No, I don't think i will!"
"Yes! You have to, fox!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"NO!"
"YES!" Foxy says.
"NO! NO No No! And thats final! !" The racoon yells.
The two foxes smile at eachother, agree with the racoon and walk away.
"Oooh! That fox is wubbing me the wong way!" The racoon said (Elmer Fud! Uhehehehuh)
