Chapter 1
To Japan I Go
Having parents that just divorced isnt easy. Having your father be deported back to Japan isnt easy either. So is having to move with him. So you can imagine my immense stress as we hopped onto the plane. I sighed, looking out the window at my hometown. My friends. My school. My mom. All gone. I took out my ipod and turned it up high, blocking out everything around me. The plane. The stewardesses. The kid whining in the seat in front of me. My dad. After a very long flight with multiple delays, we finally got to Japan. In a town with a name i couldnt pronounce.
I hid my notebook farther in my coat and continued walking with my dad. All the while, Suuke, my own personal death god, trailed behind me, taunting me with questions. "Hey, Kiri?" I disregarded him. "When are you gonna use Death Note next?" Ignored. "Right, your dads here. Youldnt want to be put in the nuthouse again, hey?" I clenched my fist. I was only speaking the truth. I calmed down again. But then again, no one else can see Suuke. Then dad turned to me. "I need to go to a job interview. This is the address of our hotel." He gave me a piece of paper. "You dont have to go there right away, but please, Kiri," He took my hands. "Be safe. Can i trust you to do that?"
I grinned. "Maybe." He shook his head, smiling. "Im serious. Japan is different than Canada." "I know." I touched the Death Note. "But you know i can take care of myself." "I know, but still...... You're just a girl." With that he left. I sighed and looked down at my paper. I glared at the japanese words. I looked around and saw a guy who looked decent. I walked up to him. "Excuse me?" "Huh?" It seemed he was talking about something before i interupted. Kind of like when i talked to Suuke. "Do you know where this is?" I showed him the paper and he pointed down the street. "At the end of the street. The brown building." I smiled. "Thank you..." I said, waiting for his name.
"Yagami Raito. And you're welcome..." He said, looking for my name. "Oh, Japanese put last names first, right?" He nodded. "Ok, so thats, Yumegami Kiri. Nice to meet you." "Yes, now if you'll excuse me, i must go." I nodded and we parted ways. "Well, he seemed nice." "Yeah," I said, looking back. "Can you see other Death Gods?" Suuke nodded. "Actually, the correct term is Shinigami." "Right. Well, does he have one?" "I cant tell you that." I stayed quiet as we entered the hotel. I looked at the person at the front desk. "Hi, uhm, my dad made reservations." "Name?" The woman asked, not looking at me, but at her computer screen.
"Yumegami." "She looked down at some papers then handed my a key. "Fourth floor. Room 403." I nodded, thanking her as i walked towards the elevator. It said no service. I glared at the sign. "Suuke..... Can i kill stairs? I dont like stairs. Stairs are stupid." I muttered curses at the stairs as i climbed them. Suuke was snickering the whole time. I finally got to the fourth floor. I passed a man that was fully covered. I stared at him as he entered the room right beside me. "Peculiar." "What?" I entered the hotel room and went immediately to the fridge. "That man. Why would one need to conceal himself?"
I took out a can of whipped cream, shook it and sprayed some in my mouth. "Unless he has something to hide." "Maybe hes hiding from your whipped cream spit?" Suuke said, bored. I glared at him and swallowed. "Im serious." "As am i." "Whatever." "You really need to stop eating so much junk food." I crossed my arms and sat on the couch. "And you need to stop eating so many apples." He glared at me. "Blame Ryuuku. He got me on the apple kick." "Whos Ryuuku?" "Just that boys Shinigami." He covered his mouth. "Oops." I grinned. "So he does have one."
I got up and got an apple from the fridge and tossed it to Suuke. "Your reward." "Yeah," He muttered. "My reward for not being able to keep a secret." I patted his head. "And thats why i love you." He laughed. "You dont love me." "I know. But its reassuring, ya?" "Chyah." I sat back on my seat, cross-legged. "Suuke?" "Yes." "Are there bad people in Japan?" "Theres bad people everywhere." "Do they put them on the news, like in Canada and America?" Suuke nodded.
"Thinking about being a hero again, Kiri?" I nodded. Suuke turned the tv on and i started writing down criminals names. I could feel Suuke watching over my shoulder. "You didnt put down times or causes?" I shook my head. "Im tired. Next time i'll specify. Right now, im jet-lagged." Then the man on the tv said something strange. "More criminals have been kiiled of heart attacks. Looks like Kira strikes again!" I tilted my head. "Kira?" "It is killer in english. Its what the boy is called. He does the same thing you do-" I threw him another apple. "Good job, Suuke."
He slapped his forehead and ate the apple with remorse. "So thats what we're called here." I watched the tv, deep in thought. Then i yawned. "Augh! I am really tired though. Im going to bed. Night, Suuke." "Night."
