Chapter 1
Late Night Fights
It's 2 a.m. and they're fighting again.
My name is Thalia Jane Robinson. Tomorrow is the first day of middle school and I'm awake at 2 a.m. I am 13 years old. My parents are on the verge or divorce. Or, I should say, my mom and step-dad are on the verge of divorce.
My mom has been married 3 times. Once before I was born, she was with James. That's who she's with now. They got divorced exactly 1 year before I was born. 2 months later, she married my father, Derrick Robinson. When I turned four, James came back. My mom told me that day, "It was love at first sight. He stole my heart and now he's returning it. I asked if she was going to leave my dad, and in tears, she nodded a simple "yes".
Now, she's married to James, and that's only because the divorce isn't final yet.
I check the time on my phone that my dad got me for my 12th birthday, and it's 2:24. I creep down to the closest step to the top where I can see into the livingroom clearly.
I hear words I can't repeat, and I gasp.
First James looks my way, and my mother after him.
"Baby, I'm so sorry-we thought you were asleep," my mother says.
"Tomorrow's a big day for you! Why weren't you sleeping?" James adds.
"I can't sleep listening to this, sorry. Oh, and mom? Did you tell him? Stress isn't good for the baby, especially this early."
James turns to my mother and says only one word: "Baby?"
