Chapter 1
Not Your Average Breakfast
The week was slow for Lily as she struggled with herself. On monday after classes she had dragged her team to the quidditch pitch, working them through the heavy rain until long after the faint light had disappeared from the sky. They had flown well dispite the weather and she felt a new boost of confidence for their up-coming match against Hufflepuff in a few weeks time.
Lily tried to stay focused during classes, helping Hugo with his silent spells as much as she could. She even endured potions, her least favorite subject, with a little too much enthusiasm. During one particularly annoying Care of Magical Creatures class, she burnt herself on Hagrids idea of 'cute' and in Defence Against the Dark Arts she accidently sent Hugo flying into the stone wall with a silent spell that was much too powerful.
But in between classes and in the great hall, she would always crane her neck, looking for Scorpius, not quite sure what she wanted to say to him if she did find him. But he seemed to be avoiding her. Albus said that he had been in all his classes, but Lily was always just missing him. This bugged her and finally, on Friday morning, so early that they sun wasn't even up yet, she snuck into Albus' dorm.
"Albus," she said, shaking him gently, "Albus, wake up." He groaned at her.
"What are you doing in here Lily?" He asked grogily, wiping sleep from his eyes.
"I need the cloak." she whispered, starting to go through his trunk.
"It's under the bed, but why-" Before he could finish his question she had the cloak in her hand and was closing the door behind her.
The invisibilty cloak had been in her family for so many years it wasn't funny. When they were younger she, Albus and James would listen to all kinds of stories about how their dad had snuck around the castle with it. Now she wasnted to use it, she would catch Scorpius before he went down to breakfast, as soon as he left the Slytherin common room. So she made her way through the castle to the small stretch of wall down in the dungeon that she knew was the enterance to Slytherin house.
As the minutes wore on students slowly started to leave the common room and head upstairs for breakfast. Lily noticed the small groups that emerged, fifth years hoping to sneak in a few extra moments of homework, first years still excited about being at the castle, and other students, well accustomed to life at Hogwarts, not in any rush at all to get to class. Finally, just as Lily was about to give up and head to breakfast herself, Scorpius came out, glancing nervously around before heading for the stairs out of the dungeon.
Lily acted as quickly as she could, tearing the cloak off and flicking her wand, causing a barrier to erupt in front of the stairs. Scorpius spun around, a wild look in his eyes, as if ready for a fight. When he saw Lily though, standing there in her school robes, her wand in her hand, his face softened and his shoulders slumped. For a moment all she could do was stare at him, so lost in her own thoughts that nothing else seemed to matter.
"I'm sorry Lily." he said when she did nothing. "I didn't mean to hurt you, or frighten you, or anything really. I'm sorry." She was shocked, he had been avoiding her because he thought she was upset with him. But why hadn't he just approached her, why hadn't he come to her and said sorry. Then she realised the answer lay in were he was, a Slytherin, too proud to admit he was wrong, to frightened of losing to play properly. But that didn't bother her, he had enough guts to say it to her then, when she could have meant to duel him, harm him.
"I'm not mad at you." She said lightly, lowering her shield and walking towards him, stowing her wand in a pocket. "I was afraid last week, but not mad. It was just strange, unexpected." By then she was standing right in front of him, so close that they were nearly touching, an electric current running between them. Once more Lily felt the fluttering in her stomach, amplified by its emptiness.
"So you don't mind," he said lifting his hand and resting it on her face "that I feel the way I do?" she sighed at the touch, tingles running through her body.
"Only if you don't mind that I feel the same way." she challenged. Scorpius smiled and leaned down so that their lips were almost touching.
"Never." he sighed, kissing her.
It wasn't like their first kiss had been, soft and barely a touch. This time it was deep, passionate, almost desperate. Lily's knees went weak and she melted into Scorpius, her head spinning, her heart and lungs screaming for air. But she didn't want to let go, she didn't want to stop the feeling of his lips on her own. It was Scorpius that pulled away first, reluctantly. He took a moment to recover, holding Lily to his chest.
"So what now?" he asked pulling her away enough to look into her eyes. She was still stunned, unable to form a sentence. She sighed, hugging him around the middle.
"We see what happens, I guess." she finally answered.
The two left the dungeons together, hand in hand, but parted as soon as they were outside the hall. Scorpius moved off to sit at the Slytherin table with some friends, looking back as he went. And Lily crossed to the Gryffindor table, finding Juniper and Hugo already there, a questioning look on each of their faces.
All Lily did was grin widely and then load her plate up with a mountain of pancakes and an ocean of maple syrup, humming the whole time.
