What the Devil is Going On In My Heart? (A Joe Moses Love Story)

"Joseph Moses!" I called down the hallway.
"Emma Whateverthehellyourlastnameis!" Joe called back to me.
"Why did you not wait for me after third period?!" I asked him angrily as I stomped over to him.
"Sorry, I was talking to Jonathan!"
"Your stupid senior friends, keeping you away from me!"
"Well, I mean, this is my last year," Joe said as we continued walking down the hallway. Our high school? Not very big, so there were no worries of getting jostled in the halls.
"Yeah, yeah, I know. And I have two more years. I don't know how I'm supposed to survive next year without you!"
"Hey, me too!"
"You got accepted into University of Michigan. Do you even know how far that is from here?!"
"Yeah, I know," Joe said as we finally arrived at his locker. "Texas to Michigan. It's far. But...we have all year! This year is gonna be great, I just have a great feeling about it."
"Really?" I asked, smiling.
"Absolutely." Joe slammed his locker shut and hooked his arm through mine. "You're my best friend, you know that right?"
"Hell yeah, I do," I said as we kept walking to our theater class.
"Look, look," Joe whispered all of a sudden.
"What am I looking at?" I asked.
"Shh! You're looking at her. Amanda. She's gorgeous. I am SO in love with her."
"Yeah, yeah, I know. You have been since sophomore year when I was just a stupid little freshman and you took me under your wing. I get it. Why am I looking at her today of all days?"
"She doesn't look beautiful to you?!" Joe asked me. We were standing partially behind some lockers.
"No, Joe, I'm not attracted to women. I can't say that she is looking very appealing to me right now."
Joe sighed. He was really smitten with her. "I mean, she's perfect! She's smart, gorgeous, she can sing, she can dance...too bad she doesn't even notice me!"
"I don't know why! You're really just...awesome." I didn't dare say what I really thought of Joe.
"Because she's just TOO perfect for me."
"There is no such thing as too perfect! Go for it! You have your chance!" I told him, half-pushing him towards her locker.
As he began walking towards her, I muttered, "What am I doing?" What was I doing? As I watched Joe walking over to her and leaning against her locker, tears nearly sprang to my eyes.
Joe Moses. My best friend of two years. I knew everything about him. I knew his life, I knew who he loved and who he hated with his entire soul. I knew that he was completely in love with Amanda Crimes and had been for two years.
I knew that I was completely in love with him.
"No!" I exclaimed to myself.
"No what?" Joe asked. I opened my eyes.
"You're back?" I asked, quickly changing the subject.
"Yeah! She...she agreed! We're going on a date this Saturday!"
"That's great! I'm so happy for you, Joseph!"
"Aww, thanks Emma! I love you!"
"Yeah, I love you too," and as I hugged him, I wished that he knew the true meaning of my words.
