Chapter 1
One Lousey Goal
The first day of the quidditch season brought with it the sun, shining brightly in the sky, white fluffy clouds incapable of holding rain, floating through the sky. As Lily sat up and looked out the window she could see the pitch, the stands already supporting the colours of Gryffindor on one side and Hufflepuff on the other. She slipped silently out off bed, dressing in the early morning light.
As she was pulling on her boots, Rose stuck her hear through her door, already dressed and holding her broom.
"Hi." Lily whispered, shoving her gloves into her pockets and picking up her wand.
"Hey," Rose answered, going in and closing the door behind her.
"What's up?" Lily asked, noticing Rose's expression and diving under her bed to retrieve her broom.
"Well, I was just down in the common room, and well..." She glanced at the broom in Lily's hand. "you won't be needing that."
Rose led a confused Lily out of her dorm and down into the common room, there the rest of the team was waiting, surrounding a long package on one of the study desks. Lily pushed through until she was staring down at a package that so very obviously held a broomstick, Remus and a black owl she did not recognise sat with it, looking very smug.
"Who...?" She started, looking around at the group of people.
"For you." Albus stated, lifting a card with her name up to her eyes.
"B-But who?" she stumbled, touching the brown paper.
"Isn't it obvious?" Rose asked, brushing her hair out of her eyes.
Lily stared at the package for a second, knowing exactly who would have sent it to her. Scorpius had just said the day before that her broom, which she had gotten off her dad, was much too old and unreliable. But she didn't think he would run off and buy her a new one, she almost cringed to think of the price tag which had been attached to the broom. She loved her broom, old as it was, it had only lost the smallest bit of speed over the years, and although the cusioning charm was wearing off, and it took a little longer than normal to respond to her, she couldn't comprehend changing.
Soon her team was growing impatient, curious about the model of broom her boyfriend had gone and bought for her. Under their gaze she slowly started to rip off the paper until before her sat a brand new HyperJet. Every part of the broom was polished to perfection and not a twig was out of place. The sleek wood was a deep red that contrasted well with the black tail. On the side, inscribed in gold was the word 'HyperJet', a small snitch logo on top of the 't'. Everyone admired the broom, creating a list in their heads and reserving their spots for a turn to fly it.
Lily just stood there, totally wrapped up in her own little world. It was beautiful, and custom, she realised. When she had been in the store she was sure that the wood had been dark brown, not red, and that the tail and writing had been more of a silver than gold and black. Why had he gone to so much trouble? Was he trying to impress her? Surely not... But then why had he bought her such an expensive gift?
Still, Lily exchanged her old hand-me-down Firebolt, for the new HyperJet, gaining alot of stares when the team finally went down to breakfast, brooms over their shoulders. She ate quckly, scoffing down her eggs, bacon and toast, hoping to speak to Scorpius before she had to go down to the pitch. When she saw him, she jumped up from her seat, startling some third years, and ran over to him.
He smiled widely when he saw her, opening his arms for her. She gave him a quick hug before turning on him.
"Why'd you go and buy me this?" she indicated the broom in her hand. He laughed, holding her around the waist.
"You know, you look so good in your quidditch robes, I think it has something to do with your hair..." Lily blushed but refocused when he smiled.
"Don't avoid the question Scorpius." he sighed.
"Fine. I bought you the broom because I want you to be safe up there today. I know that your a brilliant flyer, but anything could happen and I don't think I could bare to see you hurt. So you see, it was a completely selfish gesture." Lily stared at him for half a second before cracking up. Scorpius laughed with her, ignoring the stares from his fellow Slytherins.
"Don't you have to be somewhere?" He eventually laughed, Lily turned to see the Gryffindor quidditch team waiting impatiently by the Gryffindor table.
"I guess I do." she said quietly, turning back to face Scorpius.
"Good luck." he whispered, giving her a soft kiss and then nudging her towards her team. She left reluctantly and joined her team on their way out of the great hall.
Fifteen minutes later they were all sitting in the changing rooms, going over their tactics once again.
"Ok, so we know that Hufflepuff is always the type to wait in the background for the perfect moment to strike." Lily said, shuffling her papers in an attempt to look like she knew what she was doing. "So... well the ahhh, the best way to beat them, is to... ahh-"Albus laughed at her as she stumbled to find something that would make sense.
"Admit it little sis, your as clueless as the rest of us as to how we're going to beat these guys." Lily turned red but persisted regardless.
"No, I may not know the best strategy to take them down, but I do know that each and every one of you could fly circles around that team. I know that you can all play twice as good as they can, and I know that if we go out there and do our best then there is no way we can lose." Everyone stared at her for a moment, stunned by her sudden spurt of passion.
"Last time I open my mouth and look like an idiot." Albus murmmered as they lined up at the exit, ready to enter the pitch.
As the commentator announced them one-by-one, they stalked out onto the field, stopping at the centre circle. There the Hufflepuff team stood, waiting for them. Lily stepped forward and shook hands with a lean boy with wavey golden hair, he was only in his fifth year. In fact, as Lily surveyed the team, he looked as though he was the oldest there, all the others being second, third or fourth year students. She smiled at him encouragingly and stepped back to rejoin her team. Rose and the Hufflepuff keeper pushed off and flew to their rings.
The rest of the players mounted their brooms, Lily hoping that she would be able to control her new broom. When the siren echoed through the pitch she kicked off hard and flew straight up, much highed then she had intended to go. She angled the broom down ever so slightly and it zoomed towards the game. As she watched a small Hufflepuff chaser snatched the quaffle off Evan and raced toward Rose. Lily tensed as he drew near, but before he could throw the ball a bludger appeared out of nowhere and knocked it out of his hand. Rose high-fived McMillian as he flew past her, his bat raised in victory.
Albus now had the quaffle and was speeding towards the Hufflepuff goals, dodging a second year and passing the ball to Thalia. She caught it and zoomed around the back of the rings, quickly passing it back to Albus who was only feet from one of the rings. As the quaffle sailed through the hoop a loud roar erupted from one half of the stadium as a sea of red and gold jumped to their feet.
As the match wore on Lily divided her attention between the tiny third year seeker, the match below her, and her search for the snitch. It turned out that the young team was pretty good, their beaters making easy work of the bludgers and preventing alot of easy goals. Twice Lily had spotted the snitch, zooming off to catch it with incredible speed, only to be knocked off track by a bludger.
She cursed as Hufflepuff scored a fifth goal, taking their lead up to forty points. As she watched the quaffle being passed from hand to hand, the Hufflepuff seeker flew past her. It only took Lily a second to see what he had seen, the snitch hovering just below the Hufflepuff keeper. She was all the way on the other side of the pitch and the Hufflepuff seeker was almost half-way across. Lily spun the HyperJet around with amazing speed and leant forward softly. The broom shot off, quickly closing the distance between Lily and the other seeker. Then they were neck and neck, only feet from the snitch, when suddenly something heavy and solid crashed into Lily's side. She was knocked sideways off her broom, her ribs aching, knocking the other seeker and sending him spinning.
She landed on the ground with an audible thud, every bone in her body shaking from the force of the impact. For one frightening moment she couldn't breathe, the pain in her side too much. Then she gasped in some cool air and her hand flew to her ribs. She rolled over, but was in much too much pain to sit up. Above her the game had slowed to a near stop, the Gryffindors already racing to where she had landed, jumping from their brooms before they actually touched down.
But before any of them had reached her Scorpius was there, he sat behind her, resting her head on his lap.
"Lily?" he asked desperately. "Lily, are you alright?" She coughed and moaned before answering.
"Never better, yourself?"
"Your mental, are you sure you didn't land on your head?" He asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
"Just help me up." Reluctantly Scorpius and Albus helped her to her feet. "So what are you all doing? Get back up into the air!" The team did as she said, throwing her concerned looks.
As she picked up her broom Lily winced, the pain almost bring tears to her eyes. She had to finish this quickly, she thought, or it would just get worse. She kicked off, biting her lip to keep from screaming out. While her team had been on the ground Hufflepuff had scored another ten goals, bringing their total to 150 to 10. Lily groaned, scanning the pitch for the elusive golden snitch.
Just when she was about to give up, call it quits and accept defeat, she saw it, zooming around the head of a hufflepuff chaser, unnoticed by her or her seeker. Lily braced herself and then sped off after the chaser. The other seeker notice too late what she was doing and fell behind. But the chaser figured it out and just as Lily stretched out her hand to fold over the metal ball she swerved, crashing into Lily's bad side and sending her flying into the ground for the second time.
But she had been too late because when Lily landed, she held up her gloved hand, revealing the small golden snitch sitting there, fluttering uselessly. They had won by one lousey goal, but a goal none the less, she reminded herself.
As she was pulling on her boots, Rose stuck her hear through her door, already dressed and holding her broom.
"Hi." Lily whispered, shoving her gloves into her pockets and picking up her wand.
