The Eternals: A Fablehaven Fanfic
Chapter 1
The Beginning
They say that once before, the demon prison was opened. Everything broke into chaos, forcing the fairy queen to destroy almost all her shrines. Only by trapping the demons in her realm, did she re-capture them. She was helped by Kendra...
An Eternal.
The prison was opened by the Sphinx...
An Eternal.
I solemnly stood, awaiting their decision. The two circled me, as if examining my very soul. I stared straight ahead, having nothing to hide. Finally, Kendra spoke. "Lise, you accept the curse to eternal life? You accept the challenges of travelling constantly? You accept the risk of being the only thing standing in a potential prison-opener's way? There ARE ways to destroy eternals. Don't think of this as wonderful. This is a burden. The...last ones...well, one of them, began as a dedicated protector of Zzyzx staying shut, and ended up running into the assasins' open arms. You understand that you will never age, therefore friends will turn away from you, and you will trust no one? Your only companion will be a shape-shifter: Kristen. Are you absolutely certain that this is what you want?"
"I accept. This is what I want," I murmured, and the air tensed.
Kendra stared at me, HARD. I winced. Did I do something wrong? No. She stared right through me, concentrating so deeply that sweat trickled down her neck. The Sphinx started chanting, in some language. Dragon, maybe. I felt an euphoric leap in my heart, from living constantly, maybe. My skin pulsed with something glittering and liquid pure. Magic .
I felt my face soften a tad. My hair shine, in long silvery blonde strands. the bracelet I always wore shot off my wrist with a zooming pfft!
My eyes seemed to see more clearly. My senses sharpened. Then, the most wonderful thing happened. It started at the corner of my skull, a vibrating melody of warmth that filled my brain with energy. I felt light-headed, in the best kind of way.
The feeling stuck.
I stood, unable to resist grinning.
"Thank you," I sang, my voice stronger. Finally, they released a spirity thing, which flew into my arms and evolved into a ferret. It felt cuddly, like a teddy bear, only with adorable little paws and a sleepy face.
"I'm Kristen," He whispered, trying not to upset this golden moment of power in my soul.
I smiled. "Meet Lise. I'm twelve. forever. "
