The Quidditch Pitch
The sorting and the welcome back feast passed in a blur for Lily, she barely noticed what she put on her plate and only when Juniper Thomas dragged her off the bench did she realise it was over.
"What is with you today Lily?" she asked as the two girls pushed past first years on the way to the common room.
"I don't know, just got things on my mind I guess." Lily answered, barely dodging Peeves who thought it would be funny to drop owl droppings on the new students.
Lily and Juniper had been friends since their first year at Hogwarts. When Lily wasn't hanging out with Hugo, Rose or Albus, she would be with Juniper. She was a little quirky and strange, but a great friend all the same.
That first week passed by slowly, Lily was constantly searching for Scorpius, avoiding him in the halls and craning her neck to spot him at meals. He did his best to stay away from her, diving into empty classrooms as she passed in the halls and waiting for the last second to leave his classes so that she wouldn't have time to run into him. Lily thought that it was just a bit strange that all of a sudden he had no interest in tormenting her.
She was upset with herself for being so cowardly, he was just another guy right, if she did have feelings for him, no matter how unreasonable, they would eventually fade. That friday after class, under the pretense of checking out the competition, Lily dragged Hugo down to the quidditch pitch. It was raining lightly as the sun slowly began to fall below the horizon.
"Why are we here?" Hugo moaned, pulling his cloak tight around him.
"Because I have to know how good they are." Lily stated sitting down on the highest seat and pulling out a pair of binoculars.
"Yeah right." He grumbled sitting beside her, "I don't even play quidditch, why do I have to be here?" Lily glared at him,
"What do you mean, 'Yeah right'?" she asked angrily.
"Calm down, I was just teasing." Hugo laughed. Lily mummbled something unintelligible under her breath and returned her attention to the hoard of green and silver down on the grass.
She could see Scorpius standing in front of three distinct groups, keepers, beaters and chasers, she presumed. Each group had a mixture of scrawny young students and taller, more preportionate sixth and seventh years. Each student held a broom and most were already soaked through.
The beaters were up first, ten or so boys kicking off into the air after the two heavy metal bludgers. In the end Malfoy ordered off the beaters, exclaiming that his original beaters could knock the bludgers around ten times better then the rest off them. Lily watched him zoom around casting spells to catch the bludgers.
Next the chasers took to the air, first all together, throwing the quaffle to one another, being chased out of the air by Scorpius if they dropped it. Then when he only had six left he got them to shoot goals. Lily couldn't help but notice the expert way he handled his broom as he flew, or the way the wind swept through his blonde hair. Still the three brand new chasers that were chosen pulled her out of her day-dream. Not one of them had missed a single shot.
"Can we go yet Lily?" Hugo complained. Lily jumped, she had completely forgotten about Hugo. He sat beside her, dryer then he should be, his wand directing a stream of warm hair around him.
"I'm sorry Hugo, they're nearly finished though. You can go up to the castle if you want, I'll meet you there in ten minutes." Hugo sighed in relief and pulled his cloak around him while adjusting his scarf.
"Well ok then, if your sure you'll be alright."
"I'm sure." With that he tucked his wand into a pocket and started off down the stands, disappearing out of the pitch.
Back on the field the first keeper was facing the three new chasers. He looked strong and muscular, definately more suited to a position as a beater. His hair was a light mousey colour and was plastered to his face with rain water. Still as quaffle after quaffle hurteled at the three rings he spun, dived and sped into their paths, saving all five. He did a victory lap and as he passed his hazel eyes met her green ones. But just as quickly, he was gone, joining the other grounded keepers.
Six try-outs later Scorpius chose the mousey haired boy and sent everyone into the change rooms, yelling that he would pack up and meet them there. But once the newly formed team had vanished he started up the stairs, heading straight for where Lily was sitting, too stunned to move. His robes were sticking to his body, outlining his muscles and dazzling her for half a moment.
"What are you doing here Potter?" He asked, and to her amazement he wasn't sneering or even sounding the slightest bit rude. Instead he sounded tired, hurt and defeated.
"I was just watching the try-outs." She answered in a small voice. Water ran down Scorpius' face, looking like tears, dripping off his chin and landing on his already drenched quidditch robes. She thought she saw a small smile escape before his face returned to its nutural position.
"Well I hope you enjoyed it Lily."
"D-did you just call me Lily?" She asked, barely able to get the words out through her shock.
"Well it is your name, what else would you have me call you?" Lily thought she saw a small amused glint in his eye, he was teasing her, but not in his usaul way.
"Can I ask you something?" He asked plunging his pale white hands into his pockets
"Yeah, I guess."
"Can we not fight? I mean, I don't want to fight you anymore... I, well I don't really know, all I know is that fighting feels wrong somehow..." He was so serious that all Lily could do was nod.
"Thanks." He murmmered as he turned and left her sitting there, unable to comprehend what exactly had just happened.
Half an hour later she stumbled into the Gryffindor common room, her cloak dripping water everywhere, her body shaking from the cold. She ran up to her dorm and changed into some warm clothes before planting herself in front of the common room fire.
What was happening? Why was she feeling this way? Why on earth was Scorpius (and since when had he been Scorpius?) being nice to her?
