Chapter 1

Broken Lily

Outside the good weather was coming to an end, dark clouds were slowly rolling over the grounds, sending shadows across the grass. Lily sighed as she walked down the stairs, finally being allowed to walk that it. She had been stuck up in the hospital wing all day Sunday, something that would have made her miserable if Scorpius had not shown up early in the morning.

He had bought with him a wizard chess set and so the two of them had spent a calming day catching up on homework and playing many matches, most of which Lily had won. Scorpius still managed to surprise Lily with how much he seemed to care for her, after all had he not been the first to reach her when she had been knocked off her broom. And for some reason she did believe that a big reason for her new broom, was that he thought the old one was much too dangerous to use.

She smiled a small smile as she reached the protrait hole and murmmered the password, it was a strange feeling to realise that, at some point, he started loving her. So what if it was just puppy love, weaker than the real thing, it was still love. Methodically, still in her own world, she went up to her dorm and packed her school bag full of random books. But did she love him back, she wondered exiting the empty room and going back into the common room, saying hello to people as they congratulated her and patted her on the back.

When she climbed out of the portrait hole there he was, looking as beautiful as ever. His uniform was a little messy, most likely from being thrown on in a rush, his green and silver tie was hanging loosly around his neck, and his blonde hair was slightly wet and hurridly combed. Lily smiled as he pulled her into a tight hug. She pulled back and straightened his tie before together they headed down the stairs.

The next two weeks were the easiest Lily had ever had at Hogwarts. She felt like for the first time, in all six years she had attended, she was finally comfortable inside the castle. She had always thought of it as a second or third home, but she had never really gotten over the mysterious feel of the ancient halls. Now everything was easy and light, inviting to her.

And Scorpius, well he was better than ever, if a little bit over protective. He would go to the Gryffindor practices, walk her to every class he possibly could and watch her from across the great hall when they ate breakfast and dinner. At times Lily was relieved to escape into Gryffindor tower, but she adored the love she was getting.

The afternoon before Slytherin's match against Ravenclaw, Lily followed Scorpius to his quidditch practice. When they entered the changing rooms half the team moaned. Scorpius glared at them, warning them to be on their best behaviour. One by one he introduced them; the beaters Tyler and Blain, both sturdy sixth years, the chasers Patrick, seventh year, Jessica, fourth year and Maddison, fifth year, and the keeper, another seventh year named Allistar. She greeted the as graciously as she could, ignoring their unfriendly glares.

Lily was relieved when Scorpius dragged her out to the pitch. While the rest of his team practice, he raced Lily around the pitch, chasing the snitch and barking orders all at the same time. By the time the sun had sunk below the horizon the whole team was exhausted.

Scorpius walked slowly back up to the castle, Lily's arm linked with his.
"Your so happy when your in the air." he commented, pushing a small wisp of firey hair out of her eyes. She smiled, the moon reflecting from her green eyes.
"I always have been."
"And why is that, do you think?" He asked, completely mesmerised.
"I'm not sure." She smiled up at him, wrapping her arm around his back, his arm resting around her shoulders.
"It's like flying is just second nature for you though, like you barely have to think. You can do things on a broom that I don't even dare to dream about. It's strangely inspiring." She laughed and he listened to the sweet peal as it hung in the air. He realised then, as they walked into the castle, that he would do anything for this girl, he would go to the ends of the earth to hear her laugh. It was at that moment that Malfoy realised that the sweet innocent Lily had captured his heart.

The next morning Lily woke to the sound of soft rain drops on her window. She sighed, now she would have to watch the match in the rain. She layed in bed, not in any rush to get up at all. How much her life had changed... How different it was now. In the bed beside her Juniper sat up and saw that she was awake.
"Morning Lily." she said slipping out of bed and begining to dress.
"Good morning." Lily replied, still making no move to get up. Juniper looked over to her and sighed.
"Well come on, get up. You need to finish that essay for Flitwick and eat something before we can go down to the game. If I have to sit with a bunch of Slytherins, then there is no way we are skipping breakfast." Lily laughed and sprung from her bed, throwing her arms around Juniper.
"Thanks by the way," she said. "No one else will come and sit with me." Juniper stuck her tongue out.
"Yeah, that's why I have to do it."

The essay turned out to be a quick five minute job, just some minor corrections. Then both girls, one noticibly more excited than the other, went down to breakfast. When they got there both teams had already passed through, leaving just the crowds that would soon fill up the stands. Juniper ate quickly, complaining about wanting a good seat at least. Lily paid no attention to her, she knew that Juniper didn't really mind doing this.

Before long they were in their seats, Lily having eaten nothing at breakfast. The sea of green and silver around them was distracting and so Lily didn't see Corpius out on the pitch until he flew right over her dropping something on her lap. She looked down and saw a lily, but not just any lily, it was bright green. Beside her a Slytherin girl in her Charms class scoffed at her.

"Is there a problem?" Juniper snapped at the girl.
"No, of course not." She sneered "At least not for you, but your little friend here, thinks she can actually go out with a Slytherin. The squirt isn't even pure." Juniper jumped to her feet, instantly enraged. Lily tried to pull her back down.
"What does blood status have to do with anything you egotistical fool!" Lily cursed and jumped up, one hand holding each girl back.
"Calm down June." she hushed at her friend. "I'm sorry Kayla, she's just a little quick tempered."
"Oh shut it Potter. Don't be so weak. If your friend wants to fight, then let her fight. At least she shows enough bravery to be a Gryffindor. What are you, leftovers, dumped in Gryffindor because of what your parents could do. I honestly don't see what Malfoy see's, perhaps he's confunded." She snickered and before Lily saw what was happening Junipers fist collided with her face.
"See now that's a true Gryffindor," Kayla teased, "She has enough guts, but what about you Potter, what are you going to do? Stand there and let your friend fight your battles for you?" Juniper wound up for another hit, but Lily raised her hand to stop her. Kayla smirked once more.
"Seriously, you and Scorpius will never work out. How could he ever really have feelings for a cowardly Gryffindor? No, what he's after is someone from his own house, someone worthy of his Pure Blood. Why don't you run along now while you still can? Save yourself the humilation."

Lily couldn't do anything but shake, was Kayla right. Maybe what she had could never last, maybe it was best she leave. She dropped the lily that had been in her hand and turned to Juniper. She swallowed her tears and grabbed her friends hand, pulling her away, leaving the Slytherin stands and then running. Juniper was right behind her, calling for her to stop, but she didn't. She had been stupid to think that she could ever be happy with a Slytherin, there was just too many years of bad blood between their two houses, too much to overcome.
