Chapter 1
Leaving
"Morning, Mom." Ariana walks into the small kitchen, her words drowned by the humming of their old fridge.
"Hi, Ariana. Ronnie." Ariana let go of Ronnie's hand, reaching for a glass of water.
"Mom, what's for breakfast?" Ronnie asked.
"I dont know. Find something." She didn't turn away from her magazine.
Ronnie sighed, reaching for the fridge and grabbing a little pack of blueberries.
Life was hard for Ariana. She lived in a small little apartment with her mother, Jill, and ten year old sister, Ronnie. Almost everything in the house needed repairing, but since their father, Caleb, left three years ago, they had no money. Ariana's mother was lazy and refused to get a job, no one knows why.
They used to be a happy family. Living in a big house, two dogs, almost like a perfect family. When their father got laid off, he and their mother started fighting about money saving.
"You dirty pig!!!" Jill yelled at Caleb when he came home with four new tires.
"Our car needed new tires!!" He yelled back. "I was trying to be nice!"
"That's enough. You've been spending and spending, and we can barely afford anything!! What makes you think this is okay???"
"I've had enough of your attitude. You better pick up your butt and go get a job!!"
They yelled continuously for hours, as Ariana and Ronnie hugged tightly in Ariana's room. Ronnie didn't feel safe without Ariana.
Eventually, they heard a loud BANG! and the walls shook a tiny bit. They heard a slam of the door, and opened their door a tiny bit. They saw their father walking out. Ronnie threw herself at her dad, who just flung her off and walked out.
"DADDY!" Ronnie screamed after him. He just slammed the door and kept going.
They never saw him again.
Ariana snapped herself out of her flashback, reaching into the pack of blueberries.
"Mom, you know what's coming up?" Ariana asked excitedly.
Her mother said nothing.
"My eighteenth birthday. And do you know what I want for my birthday?"
Again her mother said nothing, and just flipped the page.
"What?" Ronnie asked.
"I want to move out."
The room got silent. Her mothers eyes wandered from the paper, to Ariana, back to the paper, and back to Ariana. She slammed down the magazine. "Absolutely NOT." She said, crossing her legs. "What about college?"
"Like you have the money to pay for it!" Ariana's voice was raising, and she lowered it back down. "I'm going to skip college. My friend has her own apartment and she's willing to let me move in."
"Who's this friend?" Her mom asked.
"Lilly. She wants me to. I don't have to pay anything." Ariana said with a smile.
"But, Ariana... what about me?" Ronnie whispered from behind her.
"Aw, Ronnie." Ariana stroked Ronnie's mouse brown hair, looking deep into her green eyes. "I'll visit everyday. And if I miss one day, I'll come the next day."
"Slow down. Slow down." Her mother stood up and came up to my face, and she smelt stale bread on her breath. "You will move out if you do all the chores for me. For a whole week."
"What kind of chores?" Ariana replied. She was willing to do this.
"On top of all the normal chores, like washing the dishes and cr^p, but you will also paint the bathroom and cut down the tree in our front yard." She quickly threw her magazine on the table, walking into her room and slamming the door.
I looked at Ronnie.
She shrugged.
