Chapter 1
Haunting Strangers
The wind on my face was refreshing after being inside all day. In the distance behind me, I could hear Darren swearing. I smiled and revved the engine. Going faster, I resisted the taunts of the human blood and headed home. I know what lay waiting for me there. Trouble. I sighed and weaved myself in and out of traffic on the Harley. Once I got on the highway, I heard the pounding of feet in the forest on my right. I smirked and looked to see if humans were near. Alone. I slowed and turned on the forest.
"Time to chase the Restless." I whispered. I released the clutch and lurched forward. Through the bushes and into the trees. My fangs came down and I followed my nose. For several seconds we were like that. I'd get close to her, then she run off into a different direction. I got frustrated at the bike sputtering at me. As I slowed, I heard my best friend running, fast. I closed my eyes and threw my senses out. Going, going, going...... Come on, where is- I snapped my eyes open. Gotcha. I left the bike on the ground and sprinted after her. Everything became blurry as I made my way towards my target. I laughed as she got in my view. The four legged creature was still running further into the woods. Once she got in my range of jumping, I growled and leaped at her at the same time. I landed on her back and hugged her as we rolled down the hill. We stopped and Bridget changed to her human form. Laughing, both of us stood up and started jogging home.
"How long was it this time?" She asked me. I checked my watch and flipped my long hair out of my face.
"That took 2 minutes. 5 seconds less than last time. We can do better than that. Wanna try tomorrow?" She shook her head.
"Can't." She slowed as we saw the house in view. "We have the Tradition Family Hunting tomorrow." She gave me the guilty face. I scowled at Bridget and followed her in the house.
"Lily!" I flinched as her voice carried throughout the house. Winistra Restless was a very strict mother. She loved me, but sometimes I got on her nerves. This time, she wouldn't take any excuses.
"Yes, ma'am?" I asked in a sarcastic voice. She turned the corner with her finger pointing at me.
"Don't you put that tone with me, young lady." She held out a piece of paper with her furious writing on it. "Did we tell you not to try out for track. Did we tell you not to use your powers on the humans. Or did we not?" I rolled my eyes.
"The principle said I should or I'd be suspended." I put my hand on my hip. "He noticed I wasn't doing anything in class because I had already gotten my work done. He knew I never did anything that involved me exercising. He threatened me." She opened her mouth to give me a comeback. "But," I stopped her, "I told him that it was your fault because you made me go way ahead of my classes." I watched as she closed her mouth and walk into the kitchen. I sighed and looked at my best friend. She shrugged and followed her mother. I didn't want to hear what she had to say, so I turned towards the stairs and taking two steps at a time, I headed to my bedroom in the attic. I walked to my bed and fall back on it to stare out the ceiling window. Mom put it there, so I could still be close to the stars. Staring up at the pinkish blue sky, I started dozing off and I dreamed of something that would never leave my mind.
The breeze felt good on my back, as I took in deep breaths. The chirping of the birds were comforting. I rolled over and felt the soft grass everywhere on me. I opened my eyes to meadow all around me. 'Last I remember, I fell asleep on my bed. How did I get down here?' I thought as I stood up on my bare feet. 'Now, I remember having my shoes on when I went to bed.' I looked around and started shaking from the cold. I wrapped my arms around my bare chest to preserve my heat.
"Wait a second." I looked down at myself. "Why am I naked?" I moved my long hair in front of me and looked around. No one was around. "Thank god, no one's here."
"I'll take that as an understatement." His voice startled me, I spun around to see the bare man. Now, that I saw him, I wasn't going to be able to get him out of head. He looked like he just woke up to find himself with no clothes on, which is exactly what happened. He looked at me and we both turned from each other. That sight will be burned into my mind as long as I live.
"Who are you?" I asked as I spotted something gleaming in the distant. "Hey," I pointed to the objects on the ground. "Do you see that?" I heard him turn around and walk next to me, sqinting,
"It looks like something shiny. Want to go check it out?" I looked at his face, too scared to see him again.
"Like this?" He shrugged.
"Well, we don't have anything to cover ourselves. Might as well." I sighed and followed him. I tried my hardest not to look at his butt as he walked. 'This is just a dream.' We were walking like for what seemed like hours. Just when my legs started hurting, the guy in front of me stopped and ran forward. I was just about to ask what it was, when I saw him hold up a robe to me. I gasped and ran towards him to pick the outfit for me.I bent and picked up the sparkily dress that had caught my eye earlier.
"You have got to be kidding me?" I scoffed. "Who's dream is this because I would never wear a dress." He looked at me and shrugged. He held up the robe again.
"Not mine, 'cause I'd never wear a robe." I rolled my eyes and turned from him and started putting on the dress.
"Whatever. At least it's clothes." I heard him mutter under his breath, but I couldn't hear him. I was focused on a buzzing that was coming from above me. I was standing there trying to figure out if it was real or if it was my alarm clock.
"Hey, look out!" I heard too late as I fell forward on the grass and spun around to land on my back. The buzzing source was coming from the creature in front of me. It had wings, which was what making the buzzing noise. It had a lion body and mane, but the face was a snapping turtle. It clawed at me and I felt searing pain on my thigh. As I was wrestling with it's talons, I saw in the corner of my eye, the dude start running towards me then stop. 'Why in the world did he stop?' I thought as I saw him close his eyes and touch his temple with his middle fingers.
"Why the hell did you stop?!" I dodged another swipe and I felt my teeth hurting. I let them down and was about to rip open his throat when I saw the guy start glowing and I looked at him as the creature's talons came down for the kill. The dude then opened his eyes. His eyes weren't blue anymore, they were pure white. He, then, threw his hands towards us and a bolt of lightning came out of his hands and fried the ugly in front of me. He fell next to me and I watched as it dissolved into nothing. I looked at the drained guy and stood up.Immediately, I bent over, due to the fact that my thigh was on fire. I gritted my teeth and stood up straight. I looked at my inflamed thigh and blood everywhere. I sighed and licked my hand. Pulling the bottom of the dress up, I took my wet hand and smeared it all over the wound. It started stinging and I watched as it start sealing itself up in the blink of an eye. 'Nothing, but a scratch.' I thought as I looked up at the guy who's name I didn't know. Without thinking, I let my fangs down and lunged at him. He saw me and panicked. As he ducked, I landed on the invisible dude and went for his throat. As I sucked him dry, he struggled, which gave the blood more taste. He grunted, trying to free my iron hands and I felt the last of his life flow into my mouth. When my dignity came back, I stood up and wiped my mouth clean.
"What the hell did you do?" No-named dude said weakly. I walked over to him and reached for him. He pulled away fast, looking scared. I sighed and squated in front of him.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you. I've had enough blood for tonight." He let me pick him up and I started walking in a random direction.
"What's your name?" He asked me. I looked at his glowing pink eyes and whispered.
"Lily. My name is Lily." He relaxed in my arms and sighed.
"Lily. I like it. My name is......Allleee" He droned out and I didn't hear what he was going to say. He suddenly felt lighter and I looked down to see the dude evaporating into thin air. I blinked and continued walking as if I'd been doing that for a while now. I, then started to sleepy and I decided to go ahead and fall asleep in the meadow. The second I closed my eyes, Winistra called out for me to wake up.
"Lily! Wake up! You'll be late for school." I opened my eyes to see bright sunlight pouring through the skylight window. I panicked and checked my right hand. When I saw the ring, I sighed and relaxed. Okay, you're okay. You have the ring on you. Today's not the day.
"Coming, mum!" I hopped out of bed and went to my closet. Standing in the full view mirror, I noticed that I had on my dress that I was wearing in the dream. "What the hell?" I muttered.
"Lily!" Winistra warned. "I don't want you using that language in this house." I rolled my eyes and said my apologizes. I continued looking at myself and decided to let it go. I carefully pulled the dress over my head and threw it away. When I went back to the closet to put on fresh clothes, I noticed a pink claw mark running across my thigh. That's when I knew it wasn't a dream. I got dressed in 10 seconds and grabbed my jacket. As I ran out the door, I heard Bridget revving the engine.
"I'm coming! I'm coming!" I slammed the door behind me and she sped off to school. I relaxed when I sat in my favorite class of all time, English. The teacher made it so easy and it was fun doing the work from that class. I went to lunch a couple hours later, dazed.
Who was that guy in that vision or whatever? Maybe Bridget can look for him. When I sat down to drink my red juice (not blood), I heard Bridget calling out for me. I got up and walked over to her by her normal spot, the art geeks. I sat next to her and she lowered her voice, as if she knew what was going on.
"Hey, Lil. What's going through your head? It's a jumble in there." I sighed and told her about the vision I had. She frowned. "A human with powers? How is that even possible?" I shrugged.
"I don't know, but I was wondering if maybe you could draw what I decribed." She thought about it, took a bite out of her cooked meat.
"Alright. Follow me to the art room." I sighed and followed to the other end of the school. "Okay," she started pulling stuff from the cabinets and drawers. "So, what does he look like?" I thought about and started my too detailed onservations on him. Something caught my mind and I cut myself off. Bridget looked at me and urged me to go on.
"Hold on." I sat down on a stool in front of her. "He knows my name." I looked up at her and spoke louder. "That human knows my name. What if he comes looking for me?" She hesitated and set her pencil down.
"Time to chase the Restless." I whispered. I released the clutch and lurched forward. Through the bushes and into the trees. My fangs came down and I followed my nose.
