Chapter 1
The Mark
She cringed as the bell rung in her head. She was very sound sensitive. The kids herded out of the classroom. Haven Valentine tugged at the white hair tie holding up her straight, black hair, tightening it. She gathered up her belongings and quietly made her way out the door. Lockers and white walls in the hallways filled with silence came. She smiled. Silence was one of her favorite things. As she crossed the entrance and went past the front office, she stopped. There was not a soul in sight. Not even in the office. The courtyard was empty. The High School was utterly silent. The gate creaked as she made her way onto the street, past the school. Main street was quicker, but undoubtedly louder. The alley was the best choice. She strode through it and noticed that there wasn't even a dog barking. The maple tree cast a shadow over her and the portion of the alleyway. Sunlight bled through cuts in the shadow. Out of the corner of her eye, a dark figure darted through the alleyway. She twisted herself around but saw nothing.
"Feh...Probably just a stupid cat..."
"Oh, I'm no cat..."
She almost stumbled over herself when she turned around.
A man in a suit stood before her. His top hat was tilted just right so that it left a dark shadow to obscure his facial features. His cane had a polished wooden base and what appeared to be a solid silvery ball for the handle. His suit was had a black jacket and slacks, with a white undershirt and a darker tie.
A thin, phony smirk could be seen beneath the shadow cast over his face.
"Ms. Haven Valentine...heh...your brother could of been a bit more accurate about your discription..."
"You...you know my brother?" She took a step forward.
"Of course. Alexander is a...friend of a friend. A good lad that one."
"What do you want...?" Another step was taken. Ther was something about him. Something, calming almost.
"All I wish is to give you a-a gift if you will..." He extended a thin hand covered in a white glove. His wrist was not visible, and it was apparent that the suit was at least one size too big. Haven took another step. She was within reach of him now, and she knew it, but she couldn't make herself back up. A soft eerie lulliby drifted through the air, almost putting her to sleep. She felt dizzy and light-headed. The smirk upon the man's face turned into a full grin. He reached forward ever so slightly and grabbed her hand, pulling her towards him.
Haven suddenly felt a burning sensation in her palm. She snapped out of her dizziness and attempted to pull away. Within a few seconds the man was gone, and so was the burning sensation. Her hand shook as she lifted it and turned it around in front of her. Nothing was there. She pulled up the sleeve of her black, turtleneck. On the underside of her arm, was a bunch of odd symbols and lines. They seemed to be tattoed into her skin. She was unsure of what just happened, and was unsure of how to react, when her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and snapped it open.
"Hello?"
"Haven? Hey where are you? You're running a little late aren't you?" Haven smiled and relief swept over her.
"Yeah, just a little late Xander. Just a little late. I'll be there in a few okay?" She hung up the phone and managed to get to her feet.
"Main Street it is..." She mumbled.
I don't plan on writing another chapter unless someone wants me to. Leave a comment if you think I should! =P
