Chapter 1

October 16, Clove's POV, Age 11

"Goodnight Clove, good night Karma." Mom said to us. It was late, and the moon was shining down on our little house. It looked like it was protecting us, along with the rest of District Two

"Goodnight." Karma says, heading up the stairs. She always did what she was told. I was less ready to obey others.

"Clove? Don't you have somewhere to go?" Mom asked with her hand on her hip.

"Yes, I guess I do. Good night Mom." I said, heading up our creaky stairs. I walked into the small room I've shared with Karma for my whole life. She was already in bed.

"You always go to sleep so early." I told her. It was on of the things that annoyed me about my perfect sister, who in the mind of almost everyone, could do no wrong.

"You never sleep." She reminds me. And she has a point. Ever since my father died, I've hardly slept at all.

"You have a point there Karie." I said, using the nickname I've called her for years.

"I know I do.Now go to sleep." She tells me sternly.

"Fine." I say, hopping into my bed, which was right next to her bed.

Karma falls asleep instantly, but I just stare at the celieng. I see the lights in our room, which are on there lowest settings. I can hardly see my sister, but I feel safer knowing that she's right there. I toss and turn, trying to find a soft spot to sleep. I curl up, and for the first time in a long time, I fall fast asleep without effort.

"No-no, please don't!" I hear my mother say. I pop out of bed. Something is wrong. My mother is almost never nervous, never scared.

"Karma." I whisper-shout.

"What?" She says, turning towards me.

"Somethings wrong." I say as I hear a loud scream.

She pops out of bed. I go to the door.

"W-we should stay in here." She stutters. Karma never stutters.

"How about I go out and see what's going on, and you gaurd the room?" I ask her.

"Ok." She tells me meekly. I turn the handle on the door, and go down the stairs one by one, quietly as I can. I reach the last stair, and I peek around the corner.

I almost scream in terror, but I keep my mouth shut. An old lady, I know her from the book store in town, holding a lamp, beating my mother bloody. Mom is screaming, begging her to stop. The old lady hits my mother in the head, and very hard. I see a dent in her skull, and the lightbulb is catching on fire. It's catching her on fire. I can't watch this anymore. I run out from my hiding place, and run to get water. She spots me, and a smirk lights up her evil, wrinkly face. She stops me with her hand.

"Where do you think you're going little girl?" She asks me. I try to free myself, but she's so much stronger than me. I didn't know little old ladies could be so strong.

"Far away from you." I say, biting her arm. She lets go, and I run towards the water. I spin aroun her, and I pour the bucket on my mother. But I can tell I'm too late. She's on the floor, and she's not covered in flames, but I can tell she's almost dead. She's badly burned, and she's hardly moving.

I take a cautious step towards her, and I bend down. "Mom?" I ask.

"Clove? Oh Clove, oh Clove, oh Clove!" She says, reaching up towards me. I take her hands in mine, and I hope that she's ok.

"Are you going to be ok?" I ask her. As much as I know she likes Karma better, I don't think I could live without my mother.

"I'll be ok. They'll take care of me up there." She says, in some kind of delusional death state.

"Up where?" I pry. I have no idea what she's talking about.

"Where your dad is. He says he misses you." She tells me, her voice unnautrally high.

"Tell him I miss him too. And just remember, I love you." I say to her.

"I love you too. Please, be careful, and be ok." She says. I hear her mummble some insane stuff that I don't catch. She looks into my eyes, and I watch her slowly fade away. I close her eyes. It looks like she could be sleeping.

I try to walk away, to get Karma and tell her everything I saw, and maybe even cry. But the old lady isn't done with me yet.

"Stay here, and if you try to escape, you're next." She says evily. I don't move an inch. She comes downstairs, tugging Karma along. She pushes us up the stairs, and demands us to get our stuff.

"Where's Mom?" Karma asks as we grab our stuff.

"She's dead." I say, my voice cracking on the end.I try not to cry. Be strong, be strong, be strong, I repeat as I pack up my stuff. Be strong, be strong, be strong, I repeat as we're quickly pushed out of our house. I see the old lady light the place on fire with some kind of match. It burns brightly in the dark night, illmunating Karma's tear-stained face.

We're taken to the communtiy home, but the old lady argues with them. She says that she'll keep us. And they let her. I don't really register what's going on untill they hand us over to the old lady. She leads us down the street, taking us to the bookstore. I catch the eye of a kid in my class, Cato I think his name is. He sees us out of his window, and he just stares. I think he's putting the peices together. But I don't have time to see if he does.Because my life just changed, and I'm not sure if I can handle it.
