Chapter 1
Listen to this story.
They pulled away from the gas station, just as the thirteen year old girl saw a man leaning against his truck with a "Help Needed" sign. Her father barely glanced out the window.
As he drove past, the daughter asked, "Why can't we help them?" "What can we do?" He replied.
"I don't know, just see what he needs?"
Her father then pulled into a mechanic shop parking lot. "Tell you what." He said, pulling out his wallet. "You go and give him this money."
The daughter was incredulous. She wasn't going to walk across the street and give the guy she barely knew any money!
"No, Dad." She said quietly. "I know him, though. He's a strong Christian, and he needs help." "You parked for nothing." The girl said firmly. "He needs help." Her dad repeated. "Then how do you know it's money that he needs?"
"__, It's always money. Now, go and give him the money."
"I'm not going alone!"
"So you want me to go with you?"
"Yes."
Her father stared at her with a fierce expression in his eyes.
"I'm going to drive back over there and you're going to hand him this money." He said firmly, and stuck to his word.
They pulled up to the man, and the girl held out the twenty dollar bill. The African-American man looked so grateful, tears came to his eyes."Thank you so much, and God bless you." He whispered. Tears came to the girl's eyes, too. "God bless you." She repeated. Her father pulled away.
"That man? I know him. He has a wife and a kid, and lives in (town in state). He's a strong Christian."
The girl's father started reciting passages from the bible, talking about how good it is to share and help. "What goes around, comes around." The girl whispered to herself.
By the time she got home, the girl was filled with regret.
Not that she regretted giving the man the money, but she regretted even hesitating to give him any.
She decided to be a better person.
