Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Beginning of the Rest of My Life
I woke up with sweat running down my face. Sweat was soaked up into the pillow and the sheets on the bed. I was drenched. I blinked over and over. I can't believe I've had the same dream over and over again. I picked up my journal and wrote everything my dream was about. (I've been having weird dreams so often I just decided to record them all)

I've had another weird dream again. This time it went like this:
The tree bark was cold against my skin. My eyes were drooping from being tired from all the nights of not getting enough sleep. The sun was almost finished setting. Once the night came opon us the five teenagers put out their arms and did the most fascinating but most terrifying thing of my life. There my dream ended.
I set my journal next to my clock. 4:30 a.m the clock read. I decided it was late enough to wake up.
I rolled out of my bed. I didn't mean to, but I fell face first onto my wooden floor. I moaned and I touched my nose, which hurt now.
I walked over to my bathroom and picked up my brush. Brushing out my long, black and wavy hair, I thought about my dream. Would it come true like all the others? Or would it stay anonymous for years and years? I picked up my toothbrush and started brushing my teeth.
After I finished with the bathroom I came walking back to my bedroom. It was a mess. Clothes were thrown everywhere. Usually this happened when I couldn't find what to wear for the day.
A black and white design covered the room's walls. A small desk was pushed to the far corner of the room, along with the desk was a small floor lamp for light when doing my homework late at night. On the far wall of the room was a window that looked into the edge of the forest. My bed was pushed against the opposite corner of the room with enough space sepperating the wall and the bed with a small table for my clock and my journal to lie on.
After much searching in my closet, I finally found an outfit that was suitable for school. It was a blue v-neck, black jeans, and black boots, which fit perectly for me since I was really pale.
After I got dressed I ran downstairs to greet my dad. All who lived in my house was my dad and me. My mother and my older brother both died when our last hosue burned down. I still have nightmares about the fire.
Dad laid his newspaper down while I was getting my bowl of cereal ready. He looked at me and said, "You look so much like your mother does."
I looked back at him. He hasn't mentioned Mom ever since the funeral, "She was much prettier you know."
"You have the same hazel eyes as she does, Hazel."
"Is that why you named me Hazel?"
He answered back with a nod and continued to read his newspaper. I ate and he read in silence. After finishing my bowl of cereal I realized I still had a while half a hour left before I had to run to the bus stop. I was only a 15 year-old sophmore so I was still not of legal age to drive yet.
I went over to the closet and took out my bag packet and slung it over my shoulder. I sighed and went outside. I still had a lot of time left but I didn't care. I walked over to my bus stop and sat down on the sidewalk. I sat for several long minutes, with teenagers slowly gathering, to wait to go to school.
After a long trip on the bus, the bus finally arrived at Black Canyon City High. Black Canyon City was a small peaceful town in Arizona. It only had about 3,400 people. A little under 40% of those people were highschoolers though.
I walked to my locker to unpack my stuff. I opened up my locker finding my stuff where I normally did. the lockers next to me where unoccupied. The two boys who used to occupy them were twins. They finally moved out of the town because their parents wanted a bigger town to live in with more oportunities and attractions.
After a minute or two of doing the regular routine of unpacking books and homework, putting my backpack inside, then taking my books and homework out for my next few classes, a boy walked passed me and stopped at the locker to the left of me. He took a piece of paper out of his bag and tried to open the locker.
I stared at him for a second. He had brown hair that was partially spiked. There was a small green highlight to the side of his head. His skin was the perfect shade. Not too tan but not too pale. He wasn't much taller than me, but he was cute! I was afraid to talk to him but I was going to get to see him very often since he does apparently now own the locker beside me.
I put on a smile and said, "Hi, are you new?"
He looked towards me and said, "Er, yeah. I just moved in to this town. This is locker 463 right?"
I looked at the locker, "Yeah. It should be. Let me see your locker combination, maybe I can open it for you."
He gave me the paper with his classes and the combination with it. I turned the dial to the right to 15, then to the left skipping 38 once then coming back to it, then I turned it to the right again going to 21. I pulled the handle and the locker opened. I glanced at his schedule one more time and noticed he had third period with me and the lunch period. I looked back to him and said, "Make sure after closing it you turn the dial back to zero. Also you have third period with me and lunch."
He looked at me again and nodded. He took out all his stuff like he was rushed when we still had about ten minutes left till the bell rang. glanced back over to me and said, "Thanks. I got to go now. Bye." He walked off to his first period class.
I shut my locker turning mine and his dial back to zero. I realized I forgot to tell him my name and to ask him what his name was. I promised I would ask him in third period.
First and second period were very slow. It kept complete concentration to get through them. Finally, third period came. The bell rang after second period and I sprinted out of the room. I ran to my locker to get out my math book and there was the boy I met this morning. I walked up to my locker and opened it. I looked at him and asked, "You figure out how to get your locker open?"
He got out his stuff and mumbled, "Yeah I did."
Not very pleased with his answer I tried again, "Were your lockers different?"
He mumbled again, "Yeah, they were."
I still wasn't pleased, "We have third period together you know. Math. Oh, I never got your name this morning. Mine's Hazel McGrey."
I could clearly tell he was a little surprised I asked him his name. But, I didn't care, I was just looking to make conversation and not get too annoying. He looked at me with his math book and notebook in hand and said, "Alex, Alex Shant."
"So, why did you decide to move here, to this small town?"
"My parents wanted to get away from the, er, 'drama' of the big city."
I could tell he was lieing about something but I didn't let that bother me, "So, when did you move in?"
"About a two days ago."
I smiled at him and I started to walk to math class with him. The whole way there we didn't say much. I tried to get the nerve up to ask him if he wanted to sit at lunch together but I couldn't. I've always been a little nervous near guys.
Once we got to math class we both sat down. The teacher, Mr. Hanks, stood in the front and asked for Alex's name, since he was new. Alex told him and Mr. Hanks directed him to the only seat that was left in the entire classroom. That seat was directly behind me. I couldn't tell if Alex was happy or not about that. Throughout the whole math class all I could think about was Alex. Nothing else. I couldn't concentrate on math so all I did was scribble in my math notebook.
The bell finally rang for third period to end and fourth period to start.
Fourth period ended very quickly to my surprise. I was very excited to go to lunch, considering me and Alex had lunch together. I sat where I usually sit. I saw Alex walk by and sit with a bunch of boys he probably met in the first two periods. My friends, Molly and Racheal, were usually the people who sat around me in the circular lunch tables. Sometimes some of their friends would join us, sometimes not.
Right when I sat down with my lunch tray Molly asked, "So, why were you walking with the new kid between sencond and third period?"
I gladly replied, "Because we have third period math together."
Racheal leaned in closer so nobody would hear and said, "When I tried talking to him in second period he sounded really quiet. Like he was hiding something, or something like that."
I leaned in too, "When I asked him why he moved here he said that he wanted to get away from all the drama in the big city."
The rest of the lunch period we talked about what normal teenage girls would talk about boys, latest events, a little bit of gossip and passing periods.
School ended very quickly for me. I had a great day, for me at least. When I went to wait for my bus I saw Alex. He was walking the opposite way of the busses and the parking lot. Plus that was away from town so there were no houses unless you wanted to walk about ten miles.
I decided on my own choosing to follow him, quietly.
Alex walked down the road and into the forest. I saw him drop his bag next to a tree and walk away. I dropped my bag a few yards away and a followed him quietly.
After about a mile of walking I saw Alex meet up with a few different guys. I second guessed myself and decided to just walk away and call my dad to [ick me up at the school but then I heard them mumbling angrily. I crouched down behind the thick oak tree.
While I was starting to crouch I accidently broke a twig in half and it made a loud SNAP. I crouched even lower but Alex and his friends saw me before I could hide myself quick enough.
Alex walked towards me and asked in the most angry and concerned voice I hace ever heard, "What are you doing here, Hazel?"
Before I could reply one of Alex's friends in a black v-neck yelled from the distance, "What is SHE doing here, Alex? You know she can't be here!"
Alex said in an angry and defensive voice, "I didn't invite her. She must've followed me. I barely know her."
The friend in the black v-neck yelled at me to get lost. I nodded at them and walked a short distance. Before they could disapear in my sight I hid behind another tree making sure not to make a single sound.
They Alex and the four other teenage boys stood there talking angrily and discussing random topics I could not here. I drifted off into my own mid every once in awhile, but I was interested in what Alex was doing so I sat through the boring torcher of waiting. The sun was starting to set. and I realized this was my dream.
The tree bark was cold against my skin. My eyes were drooping from being tired from all the nights of not getting enough sleep. The sun was almost finished setting. Once the night came opon us the five teenagers put out their arms and did the most fascinating but most terrifying thing of my life.
