Chapter 1

Floating

Something horrible has happened. Something that no one deserves. Something that no one expected and no one had planned for. Nothing makes sense to me anymore. The way the world works is a mystery. Why did bad things happen to good people? I am sentenced to a life of misery and pain. Never knowing what will happen, always living in uncertainty.

I feel light. Like I am floating in a cloud. The surrounding world is hazy and is blanketed by a heavy fog. I feel as if I am in a dream. Not like I am dreaming, like I am part of someone else's dream. Like I am caught in this state of confusion and unawareness All I see is white. Am I a figment of someone else's imagination? Do I even exist anymore? Did I ever truly exist? Nothing makes sense anymore. I have memories, but they are all covered by that misty fog as well, making me wonder if they were real. I am not really aware of anything but my own confusion. Suddenly, I feel restless. I begin to squirm but the blanket of fog wraps tighter around me, holding me tighter. I fight as hard as I can, but I cannot break away from this terrible nightmare. I thrash and twist and scream for help, but no one comes. No one hears me. The cloud envelopes me and I sink down and down and down. Suddenly, I am falling. I can feel the air swirling up around me, and the familiar sensation in my stomach I get when I a falling. But I still feel trapped. As if the fog is falling with me, it's long wispy tendrils unwilling to let me go. I still see nothing but white as I fall farther. The white becomes brighter and brighter and purer the longer I fall. When I close my eyes, I still see nothing but white. Panic starts to take its toll as the white gets brighter still. Then without warning, I stop falling and color floods back to me. I am floating above a road looking down at a terrible sight. In the distance, a large ditch holds up a crushed, blue van. Blood dyes the asphalt on the street a vivid red.
