The Beginning

"Mother!" Rosemary, a mere six year old, rushed into her mothers outstretched arms, enjoying the embrace in the short moments that it lasted. Emmett, Rosemary's best, and only friend, stood beside her mother, his cheeks becoming slightly pink at the sight of his angelic-looking crush. He had always liked her, even when she tipped her milk all over him when they were toddlers. They had become inseperable, even at a young age. Little did Emmett know, he wasn't the only one out of the two that liked the other.

"Emmett." Rosemary whispered, biting her lower lip nervously. He was indeed like her brother, but lately she had become fond of him much more than a sister should. "It's my birthday today."

Emmett, who already knew this and more, smiled at her in the most kindest way he could manage through his self-embarrassment. "Happy birthday Rosemary."

"Thank you." The child replied, letting out a small giggle of excitement. To her, birthdays meant extra cake and gifts from close family members. Unlike Emmett, who had both parents at home providing for him, Rosemary only had her mother. Her father her somehow disappeared years ago, no one knowing his whereabouts or why he left. Her mother was torn for months, unable to care for her own daughter. And so, for that short span of time, Rosemary was raised by Emmett's parents, who lived next door. To Rosemary and her mother, they were classified as family.

"Happy birthday dearest." Rosemary's mother placed a simple kiss on Rosemary's cheek, before leaving the sitting room and entering the kitchen area without another word.

"Want to play a game?" Emmett asked Rosemary, after many moments of uncomfortable silence.

"Sure." Rosemary replied, the smile she wore before the sudden silence returning, only this time it was wider with anticipation.

"Alright," Emmett sighed, looking into Rosemary's eyes with affection, but Rosemary didn't noticed this, "lets flip a coin. Whoever loses, has to kiss the person who wins."

Rosemary gasped in fear, her eyes widening as far as they would go. "On the lips?" Emmett nodded.

"But then we'll get cooties!"

"No we won't." Emmett re-assured Rosemary, an amused grin lingering on his lips. "My mother's got the cure for cooties. We'll be alright." Even though Emmett was one year older than Rosemary, he knew cooties didn't exist. His older brother, Richard, had told him so. He only wanted Rosemary to kiss him.

"But I haven't got a coin." Rosemary frowned, patting down the two pockets her short, light pink dress had, but she didn't feel the outline of any coins.

Emmett, who had come prepared, revealed a simple quarter. "Tails." He grinned, flipping the coin before Rosemary could even protest.

Glaring jokingly at her friend, Rosemary waited patiently until the coin landed on the back of Emmett's hand.

"Heads. I guess I lose."

And before Rosemary knew it, Emmett's lips were pressed against hers.

"Emmett!" Rosemary yelled, her hand holding up her precious lilac dress as she chased after her boyfriend, who had robbed her of her summer hat that had protected her face from the never-ending warmth of the sun.

Emmett chuckled, glancing back at his infuriated lover, who was slowly reaching him, even though she was wearing those atrocious heels her mother had forced onto her. He knew she wasn't one to like such girly things. If it was her choice, she would wear mens clothing. Not that Emmett would mind. She looks good in anything to him.

"Come on Rose, you should be faster than that!" Emmett taunted, waving the hat around in the air, only increasing Rosemary's urge to catch him and call him a few choice words.

"No!" Rosemary squeaked in fear as Emmett accidentally released the hat, sending it flying through the air and out of sight. Her mother was going to be so angry! "Emmett." She turned, a malicious expression on her once innocent face.

Emmett instantly knew that letting go of her hat came with a price. A deadly price.

"I'm going to kill you."

"I didn't do it on purpose." Emmett reassured, taking a cautious step back as Rosemary took two forward. His reassurement didn't have any effect on Rosemary when she was truly out-of-mind furious.

"I don't care." Rosemary spat out through gritted teeth, clenching her jaw in anger. "Mother's going to kill me."

"I'll tell her it's all my fault. I promise." Emmett let out a manly yell as his future fiancé tackled him to the ground, her stupid dress forgotten. The only thing on her mind was revenge.

Emmett softly chuckled, a grin spreading on his face. "I thought I was the tough one."

Rosemary rolled her eyes, used to Emmett's pathetic sense of humour. "Sure Emmett, sure."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

"Emmett?" Rosemary's voice was weak, only echoing around the empty house, a reminder of what her mother had said.

He's gone Rosemary. A bear killed him. He's not coming back.

At first, the words had been harsh, but now they made sense. Her mother never was good with sympathy. Especially after Rosemary's father left. "Emmett." Rosemary's courageous façade cracked and she collapsed in a sobbing heap, no longer being able to remain as strong as she thought she was.

"Come back to me. Please come back to me." Her cries of hopelessness were drowned out by what could only be the laughter of a truly evil being.

"Lost someone important have you?" The inhumanly beautiful man ran a hand through his sleek, black hair, his eyes focused on his next prey. She was vulnerable, a willing victim to his hunger. The hunger that consumed him. Not that he minded.

"Yes." Rosemary whispered, turning her head away. She didn't care that a stranger was beside her in the halls of the home that she had shared with her husband, she needed the company more than she could ever have imagined.

"Want a way out?" The man, a vampire going by the name of Aro, smirked. Another newborn for his coven would complete his identity, make the Volturi well known.

Rosemary faced him, her eyes shining with an ounce of curiosity. Could he actually help her? "Alright. What's in it for me though?"

"Immortal life." But as Rosemary opened her mouth to tell Aro he was completely out of his mind, he had already sunken his over-sized canines into her jugular, satisfying his thirst and transforming her into a blood-craving monster. "I've set you free. Now you will thank me by joining me and my coven. We need someone like you. You don't mind, do you?"

Rosemary yelled out in unimaginable pain, her mind begging for death. The venom ignored her pathetic pleading, still flowing through her veins. "I'll take that as a no." Aro chuckled, turning his back on a suffering Rosemary. "I will be back for you once you are exactly three months old. From then on, you will be a part of the all-powerful Volturi. You shall be named Maria. A beautiful girl like yourself deserves a beautiful italian name."

As Aro left, Rosemary could do nothing but writhe and cry out.

Cry out for Emmett.
