Chapter 1
New Beginnings, New Friends
I was in my room packing, and I asked my mom, "Mom, why do we have to move?"
My mom walked in my room and sat next to me and said, "We don't have any more use in Alabama. Besides, your father lost his job, so we have to move somewhere we can afford. We're goin' to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Besides, Parry's mother said she could come, so why aren't you happy?"
"I don't like making new friends. I love it here mom, I don't want to move. What if no one likes me? Besides, I've heard of stuff that goes on in Tulsa, and it doesn't sound too pleasant." I put my face in my hands, and I started crying. I usually get what I want when I do that.
My mom had an angry expression on her face, "That isn't going to work this time. I'm sure you'll make plenty of friends. Besides, you're a very friendly person. But Parry on the other hand..."
"Yeah, I know about Perry, mom. Even though she's mean to a lot of people, she isn't mean to me. But who said I would be friendly to the people in Tulsa? I've seen them in the newspaper, and they were writing editorials for that kid for months. What if I end up like those 'Tulsa kids'?"
"You're not gonna be like them. I'm pretty sure they're friendly. Just give some of the kids on the street we're moving to a chance. You might have something in common with them."
"Mom, I've never met anyone that likes reading, writing, and watching movies. If I can't now, I won't in Tulsa. Besides, I'm too shy to talk to any strangers."
"You're not always shy. You make Parry laugh everyday. You're very friendly, and that's hard to find in people."
I heard dad honk the horn on the truck, so now we have to put all the boxes in the car and go to Tulsa. Besides, dad was never really a big help. Mom was the only person who was nice to people. Dad was barely nice, he's only nice when he actually has money. But in Tulsa, we probably won't have too much.
The whole ride to Tulsa I was asleep, thinking about how it would be there. I've never had to move, and I didn't like the thought of having to make new friends, because it made me get butterflies in my stomach. The only friend I would have there would be Parry, because a lot of people there won't talk to me. Besides, I've never seen any other girl that actually likes wearing jeans, hoodies, and Converse. But I never liked being like everyone else, and I wore what I wanted to.
We finally pulled up into a beat-up neighborhood, but the house we were living in didn't look too bad, I guess. I coul smell cigarette smoke, and it made me start coughing. I got out of the truck, and I could hear yelling from one house, across the street. Then, a boy that looked about my age, walked out and slammed the door, then he walked down the street. From where I was, he looked pretty cute, but I was about a mile away, so I could be wrong.
Parry walked towards me and said, "You got enough sleep? The ride took about six hours!"
I was shocked. I could never sleep that long at once. "Six hours? Sheesh, I don't remember the last time I slept that well..." Parry started laughing. Parry wasn't really like me. She got in trouble a lot, but not serious trouble. I guess she was more independent than I am.
I told my mom when she told me when we were moving, I got the first pick of the room. I walked inside the house, and it looked a little better on the inside than the outside. The outside looked pretty beat-up, but on the inside, it looked pretty nice.
I walked up the stairs, and I walked into a room with a window in it, and you could see the sunset perfectly. I stared out the window for a while, and then I started unpacking my things. When I was finally done, I flopped down on the bed, and fell asleep.
When I woke up, the sun started to rise. I shot right up, and looked out the window. It was so pretty, I wish I had a picture of it. But I couldn't, because we could never afford a camera, which most people couldn't. I got dressed, in my gray hoodie, blue shirt, skinny jeans, and black high-top Converse. I went down the hall into the bathroom, and brushed my dark brown, almost red hair. It was straight after I brushed it, but my hair is naturally curly. I look better with straight hair.
I went down the stairs, and everyone else was already up. Mom was making breakfast, and dad was getting ready for his new job, as a roofer. Dad always told me he wanted to be roofer, and I guess Tulsa was his "big opportunity" to be one.
For breakfast, all I ate was bacon and eggs. I never really liked eggs, but bacon was one of the best things in the world.
Parry said, with a mouth full of food, "Hey Emilia, you hear about the drive-in?"
I was shocked. Back in Huntsville, there wasn't any drive-ins, and it wasn't very too often you could see a movie. "There is? I wanna go!" I ran out the door, saying, "Bye mom, bye dad!" Everyone was sitting at the dining table, and they were shocked, even though they knew I liked watching movies.
I was walking down every street, and it took me hours to find the drive-in. I forgot my money at home, and I found a whole in the fence, so I snuck in. I sat down in a chair that was for the people without a car, I guess. I've never been to a drive-in, so I wouldn't know what they were like.
Two boys walked by me, and one of them was the one I saw yesterday, and the other was the kid they were constantly writing editorials in the paper about him. From up close, they were pretty cute, and they looked too innocent to hurt anyone.
The two boys sat in the chairs in front of me, the boy I saw yesterday was sitting in front of me. I heard them talking about some people named "Sodapop, Darry, Two-Bit, Dally, and Steve". I have no idea who they are, but I guess they know who they are.
I heard the cute one say, "Darry's been yellin' at me again. We got along just fine until mom and dad died. I can't believe that my own brother likes yellin' at me."
The other boy, with the scar on his face, said, "Aw, Ponyboy, don't say that. At least your parents aren't like mine. All my mom does is yell at me, when she's not drunk, and my dad beats me. You're better off than I am. You're the lucky one."
I started to frown, and then I started getting all emotional about what they were talking about. It sounded like neither one of them had parents, so I guess out of all three of us, I was the lucky one. I sure didn't feel like it.
It was pretty cold outside, even though I had a hoodie on. I got bored, so I started stuffing my hands in my pockets, and I found 10 dollars. I got up and headed towards the consession stand, when I saw the two boys look back at me.
They were both really cute, so I started to blush. "Uh, hi." I managed to say. I was shy around strangers, but this time I didn't feel shy, I just felt strange.
The one I thought was the cutest said, "Hey. I'm Ponyboy." Then he pointed towards his friend next to him and said, "He's Johnny. Are you new here? I've never seen you here before."
I said, hoping I wasn't blushing anymore, "Yeah, I'm new. I'm Emilia. Well, I'll see you guys later."
Johnny said, "Where you goin'?"
I turned back towards them and said, "I was going to get some popcorn and a Pepsi. You guys want anything?" I don't know why I asked them, but it just sort of came out.
Ponyboy said, "It's ok. I'll pay for it. Johnny you want anything?"
Johhny took his attention away from the movie and said, "Naw, I'm good. Just a 7-Up, I guess."
Ponyboy and I went to the consession stand, but it was a really long line. I tried tp break the ice, so I said, "How is it here? I've never been here before, so is Tulsa an alright place?"
Ponyboy shrugged. "I guess so. A lot goes on here, but me and my buds always stick together. A lot has happened lately, and it's been pretty tough for us. You should meet them sometimes, they don't bite." Ponyboy started to grin, so I guess he knew I was shy. I hope he didn't see me blushing when I met them.
"That would be cool, I guess. My mom told me I needed to make some friends, so I'll meet them. But, I think I already made two new friends." I smiled at Ponyboy, and he smiled back.
I didn't want to ask him this, but I was curious, "So, how did Johnny get that scar?"
Ponyboy turned from happy, to sad. "A few months ago, a couple of Socs beat him up. The guy was wearing a few rings, but he's long gone now."
I was confused. What's a Soc? "Ponyboy, what's a Soc?"
"It's the rich kids on the other side of town. We're the greasers, but it don't bother me to be one. Socs are cold people, and they're always drunk, beating on us greasers."
After I thought about it, I would rather be a greaser anyday, even though I would be considered one. "Wow. Call me a greaser, then!" Ponyboy and I started laughing. We finally got our popcorns, Johnny's 7-Up, and mine and Ponyboy's Pepsi's.
"Hey Johnny. Here you go," I said, handing Johnny his 7-Up.
Johnny fell asleep while we were gone. He rubbed his eyes and said, "Gee, thanks."
I said to him, "Don't worry, you don't have to pay me back. It's what friends do." I smiled at him, and he smiled back. I guess I would make friends, after all.
