Chapter 1

One Wish is all it Takes

by: Alooney
The Kensworth family weren't what you would call normal although they often claimed they were. The Kensworth's were the kind of people who would deny who they were simply for the sake of fitting in. Jenny and Ross Kensworth lived in a normal house on a normal street in a normal town. It's also known as 36 Hamphead Lane, Ipswich.
Jenny Kensworth was a tall women with an elegant form, curly brown hair that fell all the way past her waist and sparkly blue eyes. Most notable was her hatred for anything abnormal. Jenny had a secret though; one she'd hidden for many years from all, including her husband and children.
her husband, Ross, is the manager of a company that designs pens. He was a very average looking man, tall, slight tummy, small black eyes, grey haired and balding. Ross had a short temper that could blow at any given time, this gave him a great advantage when managing a company.
Jenny and Ross lived with their four daughters and one son.

Maddie, the eldest who at the time was thirteen slammed her school books down on her desk and threw herself onto her bed. She groaned mournfully, she had three full assignments due in four days and they were on her most loathed subject of all. English. The weird thing was that she loved to read and write. In her opinon she hated it because of the way they made you learn it. Maddie started sobbing softly into her pillow, school stressed her out, she lifted her head up and noticed a yellow note tapped to the purple head board, she grabbed it and read.
"Maddie, your Father and I are attending to buisness. Layla and Carla are sleeping at their friend's house. Take care of Henry and Clair. Won't be back until tommorow"

"Thanks, Mum"

I froze. They always decided things when I'm not here! I thought angrliely. I sighed inwardly, slid off my bed and walked out into the hall to check on Henry and Clair. I found them outside playing in the flowers Layla and Carla had planted three years ago just to brighten the pretty plain backyard. Aside from the pink, yellow and blue flowers only one other thing was welcoming, a little wooden bench coloured like the rainbow.
Clair was now sitting on it trying to pull Henry up by one arm, her other hand was holding her favourite book "Alice in Wonderland". I smiled, I loved their need for adventure and want for knowlegde. It's why I read to them every night. I don't say it but they're my favourite siblings. I couldn't talk to Layla and Carla, they had no interest in books, drawing, writing or imagination. They were alot more down to earth and I think the only thing they talk about is boys and friends. It's appropiate that they're twins since they have so much in common.
Henry started trying to pull Clair off of the chair just so he could be with her, instead of falling, Clair just hopped off of the bench and started dancing. She was only five and Henry was three. Clair had tumbling brown hair cut just above her waist it was usually tied into a ponytail, which Layla hated. Henry's hair was jet black and blew in the wind where ever he went. They both had stark black eyes and round faces. I looked just like Clair, although my hair was cut at my shoulder and I was nine years older.
"Clair, Henry, do you think it's time to go inside?" I noticed the quickly depleating sunlight, they shook their heads anyway. I frowned playfully and said in a scary voice," whoever dosen't get inside will be eaten by the icky monsters!" They laughed and squealed at me as I chased them around the yard. When I was puffed out, I stopped to laugh and breath heavily. Henry ran inside and Clair spun around pointing her finger at me and grinning wildly.
"I'm not afraid of you! I'm Alice!" She poked her tounge out playfully and I lunged at her tackling her to the ground. I made sure I didn't hurrt her, but I still half dragged half carried her inside.
I sat her in front of the eletric and Henry chased after us and layed down in front of her. That was when I noticed how grubby they were. Clair's denim skirt and pink t-shirt was caked with mud and grass as was henry's ovarals.
"What have you been doing?!" I asked hysterically. It was all over the carpet! They just laughed as I grabbed their hands and led them to the bathroom. I scrubbed their faces and hands then got them a new change of clothes. After this was done I locked them into my arms and put them in the living room, making sure they had a few toys to keep them occupied.
I set about making dinner. Chips with gravy, Henry's favourite meal. I set this into three bowls which are alot less messy than plates when you're eating with a five and three year old. I went into the bright living room to get Clair and Henry but froze the minute I walked in.
A silver wolf was sitting in the middle of the room, Clair and Henry were clapping and laughing at the... smiling... wolf. The wolf is smiling! My jaw dropped and I stared frightfully at the wolf. I spoke in a whisper to Clair and Henry.
"Back away, slowly and silently", Clair looked at me with awe in her eyes.
"Why Sissy?" Don't children have any sense!? I slowly walked up to Henry and bent down to pick him up. That's when Clair lifted her finger and the wolf dissapeared. I stopped and stared, wide eyed, at Clair. she was moving her finger again and suddenly a unicorn appeared, It's fur was pure white and it's horn and hooves were silver like the moon.
The unicorn lifted it's head and looked me straight in the eye, I felt a sudden calmness and an urge to reach out and touch the beautiful beast. And that's what I did. The minute I did everything stopped and I was blinded by a blue light.
A voice spoke, it was a clear female voice. Her voice sounded so elegant that I could just picture a tall women with long, soft hair and smooth striking features. "Madalyn", the hidden women said," for over coming fears that none have ever, you are granted one wish", she finished and I stared into the sparkling light.
Fear? What fear? I hadn't felt any fear when I'd touched the unicorn. I pushed that thought aside and realised she'd given me one wish. I thought for a minute. What had I wanted my whole life? What had I been denied ever since I'd realised it was there? Only one thing came to mind.
I gulped and uttered one word in a small and frightened voice," adventure".
