Flashbacks

"I'm sorry, Sashuki," I whisper, holding by little brother close, feeling his heart beat in rhythm with mine. He clings to me like a baby monkey to its mother.
"But I don't want you to go," he whines, small, thin voice trembling with the effort of trying not to cry. My soul nearly rips in half from the agony of hearing him say that, and I bite my lip.
"I know." I swallow hard and lay a soft hand on top of Sashuki's head. "I don't want to go, either. But-- but I've got to leave. For my safety... and yours."
His eyes flash as he hardens his innocent face into a little-kid expression of defiance. "I don't care!" he cries. "I don't care, Saru... please stay...."
"No. Sashuki, I'm so very sorry to you... I love you, and I always will..."

*My mother's eyes gleam like chips of ice as she glares at me, arms crossed, chin lifted in contempt. She glances at my permanent wolf ears on an otherwise human body, and grimaces.
"You're no daughter of mine," she hisses cruelly. "You're just a freak."
I grit my jaw and glower. I keep my mouth shut, but inside my head I'm cursing up a storm.
She smiles coldly. "Hm. Nothing to say, as usual. Useless abomination of nature."
Ralene-- that's her name-- seems to be plotting something. As usual.
"Beat it," she commands me.
I bare my sharp, pointed teeth, and flip her the bird. She returns the Finger.
"Varluuit sarminnd galu chym'ret," I mutter under me breath-- an ancient wolf curse.
The vicious slap to my face comes so fast I don't have time to stop it. Her hand is like frozen fire-- lava-hot yet deathly cold, all for just a split second. My wolf instincts flare up inside me, and I barely manage to control them. In other words, I come far too close to brutally murdering Ralene.
I don't want to kill her. Not because she's my mother-- I couldn't care less about that-- but because if I did, that would only reinforce my evil reputation among the humans of Yeskend, West Virginia. They already think I'm a monster... so I'd better not prove them right.*

*So much blood... everywhere... pooling around my feet, flowing from the body of my enemy in tiny scarlet rivers, thickening the air with its iron stench... And it's all over my claws. I stare down in horror at lifeless Idaar. His white fur is now soaked with red. This is my fault. I really am a monster....*
