"Mom I'm home!" I set my bookbag down by the door. "Where are you?"
"I'm in here paying the bills!" I heard my mom say from her study. I knew that since shewas paying the bills, she probably wasn't in a very good mood, so I went straight into the kitchen to make her a cup of coffee: two sugars, no cream. Just the way she liked it. When I was finished I set it down on her desk and pulled up a chair next to her.
"You are an angel sent from above!" My mom exclaimed as she threw her pen down and grabbed themug with both hands.
"How's it going?" I asked her.
My mom sighed. "We'll be okay."
I nodded, but I knew she was only saying that to keep me from worrying. The truth was, our financial situation hasn't been "okay" since my mom lost her job five months a go. She's been working at a fast food restaurant until she can find a new job, but so far she hasn't had much luck.
My mom saw the worried look on my faceand scrambled to change the subject. "So how was your last day of school?"
I shrugged. "Fine."
"Did your principal give her annual end of the year speech?" My mom grinned and did an imitation of my overly-dramatic high school principal. "I loved this year and I am going to miss each and every one of you so so so very very very much!" With each "so" my mom threw her hands around and accidentally knocked a stackof papers off her desk. I giggled as I bent down to pick them up, but then stopped as a brightly colored letter caught my eye. I read it aloud.
Dear Ms. Miller,
After reviewing your resume we decided that we would be delighted to hire you as and English teacher for our Teaching Abroad program. If you chose to accept we would send you to Thailand right away
I stopped reading and looked up at my mom, who was picking at her fingernails, avoiding my gaze.
"Thailand! They want you to go to Thailand?!"
"Well yes but I don't think I'm going to take the job," My mom reached for the letter but I held it out of her reach.
"Wait what? Why not? Mom, you've beenlooking for a job for five months and this would be an incredible opportunity for you! Besides you've always said how you dream of traveling to another country!"
"But Sophie I'd be gone for a year! I can leave you here by yourself, and you can't go to Thailand with me!"
"Why not?"
"Because Honey, not only would you be leaving your friends and your boyfriend but you'd be leaving the country. For a whole year!"
I knew my mom was right. I couldn't bear the thought of having to learn a new language and a new custom. The idea freaked me out! I shook my head. What was I thinking? I was being selfish. My mom needed this job.
"Mom, look down at those bills. You've been looking for a job for five months. You're working at a fast food restaurant! Now you've found the perfect job for you and you're throwing it away because of me!"
"Well what do you think we should do?"
I thought about it for a moment. I was hoping another idea would come to me, but unfortunately the only idea I could think of was one I didn't like very much.
"I could go stay with Dad." I said quietly.
"What? You mean in Forks?"
"Why not? I mean it's only about three hours away from here in Seattle, so I could always come back to visit my friends and Matt."
"Well, I guess that's a valid option." My mom said thoughtfully.
"Mom," I said gently. "I think it's our only option."
"And you're sure you've got everything?" My mom asked, wringing her hands nervously.
"Mom, I've checked three times. I have everything."
"Okay. Don't forget to call okay? Call whenever you need to, even if it's 3 in the morning in Thailand!"
"Okay Mom."
My mom pulled me into a tight bear hug. "I'm gonna miss you so so so much!"
I grinned "You're starting to sound like my principal."
"I'm serious." My mom said, still hugging me.
"Sorry. I'm going to miss you too. I love you."
"I love you too. Write and call me!"
"Same to you. Bye!" I turned to my dad, who was leaning against the driver's side door, waiting for me.
"Ready?" he asked.
I nodded. "Ready." I got into the passenger's side and waved to my mom as we pulled out of the driveway. When we got to the interstate I sighed and leaned back in my seat. Goodbye Seattle, hello Forks.
