Chapter 1

Sirens sounded and the crowd immediately scattered. Among the crowd ran a petite red-haired young girl. Dashing out of the tangled mess of bodies, she made a mad dash for the fence. Easily scaling it, the girl took off down a side street and up the fire escape to her right. Jumping form one rooftop to the next. Knowing what would happen if she did not make it to her destination in time forced her to push herself harder. Taking a running leap from a small, one story building, the girl rolled herself back up to her feet. Never breaking pace, she started to feel the warm first ray of morning light. Silently cursing herself, the girl parachuted herself to the fourth branch of an oak that sat outside the window to an old, gothic two story house. Quietly she made her way through the small opening, knowing that the silence the hung around her like a cloak should be anything but comforting. Slowly making her way towards the twin bed, the girl striped off her soiled, unclean clothes and carefully climbed into the warm and inviting bed. Sighing in content, she slowly allowed her eyes to peacefully close. She was almost asleep.

“Glad to see that you have made it back, Ravenna,” whispered a hard voice from the corner of the room.

Snapping her eyes open, Raven laid perfectly still, already knowing who the voice belonged to.

“What? No annoying comebacks? I’m hurt,” the voice suddenly took on an air of arrogance. She could detect the slight mocking and coolness of the tone.

Clinching her fist, Raven made her way out of the inviting cotton sheets. Turning her light green-blue eyes to meet those of cold gray steel. Walking past him to her closet to grab an outfit for the day. Raven then tried to walk past him to the connected bathroom.

Blocking her path and refusing to move, Raven knew there was no getting out of this without meeting him head on. Sighing, she looked up to get a better look at her leaders face. His hard features had a look of determination, but then again when did it not? His chin was set. His high cheek bones and straight nose sat perfectly aligned. Above them were his cool gray eyes that had always reminded her of a storm. His dark hair laid carelessly across his forehead. His hair was the kind that just made you want to run your fingers through it. It was the darkest black Raven had ever laid eyes on. When the light hit it, it looked almost blue.

Shaking out of her thoughts, Raven said, “Look, Xavier. It’s none of your business where I go on my off hours.”

“None of my business?” Xavier mused, dragging out his words. He paused. A thoughtful look seemed cross his features. Refocusing back in on Raven he stalked towards the door that lead into the hallway. Pausing only to call to Raven over his shoulder, “Be down in half an hour.”

Sighing, Raven walked into the bathroom knowing that she would never be able to make up those crucial few hours of sleep.
