Join the team

"Hey Oliver I heard you made Quidditch captain. Congratulations!" I said when he sat next to me in potions. "Thanks, it’s an honor. I can’t think of a single thing better. Did you want to try out?" I blushed deeply. "Me? No, I couldn’t." "Why not, if you made it on the team then that’s all that matters right?" "Yeah, I guess but I just don’t want to be embarrassed by half the school and you know they'll all be there watching the tryouts." "Then how about a private tryout, just me that way even if you are bad no one will know." "You'll know." "Holly, do you know how many terrible players I’ve seen over the years, you can’t possibly be the worst." "Excuse me Miss Trumps, Mr. Wood is my teaching getting in the way of your discussion?" Snape said "Sorry Professor." I mumbled opening my book.
"I don’t know about this." "You’ve already canceled and rescheduled 4 times you’re doing this." Wood said as we stepped onto the Quidditch field. "What position are you hoping for, we need a seeker." "Actually I was hoping on being a chaser." I said mounting my broom. "All right how about first you just fly around the field so I can see how good you are." I flew into the air and made a few sudden turns and spins to show him how good I was at maneuvering a broom. I saw something zooming towards me. Had Oliver thrown the Quaffle towards me? No, he couldn’t have possibly thrown it this high. I realized too late it was an owl. It crashed into me and my broom spun out of control and I fell off. I reached for something anything to grab onto. Finally my hands got something. I looked up to see a board sticking out of the stadium; I looked down to see the Quidditch pitch at least a hundred feet below. "Oliver!" I yelled. I saw him running into the school. He was just going to leave me here. A few minutes later I saw Oliver run back out with a broom, he flew over to me. "Jump on." He called to me. The broom was about a foot below my feet. "Can’t you get closer?" I asked my hands getting numb. "No, I might knock you down." "If I jump I might fall." "You won’t." "What if I do?" "I’ll catch you no matter what; I promise you won’t get hurt." I shut my eyes and let go.
A few seconds later I had landed on the broom behind Oliver. I wrapped my arms around his stomach, and buried my head into his back. His robes smelled freshly washed. It was nice my ex-boyfriend hardly ever washed his, so as much as I would have liked to cuddle in close to him the smell repelled me. "Holly, we're on the ground now." he said in a very comforting tone. I opened my eyes, sure enough we were. I climbed off. "Do you want to go to the actual try out your an excellent flyer?" "No, I messed up I only get one chance and I blew it." "Hey I saw that owl it came out of nowhere it wasn’t your fault." "I should have avoided it." "Then let’s just say this wasn’t a real try out so it doesn’t count." "Oliver you can bend all the rules you want but I’m not getting back on a broom for a while. I’m sorry I just can’t." I quickened my pace back to the castle.
"Why is Wood staring at you?" my best friend Sheryl asked. I looked up and sure enough Oliver was sitting across the common room with his eyes fixed on me. "Quidditch try outs were today." "So?" "Oliver wanted me to try out for the team." "I didn’t know you liked Quidditch." "I don’t know it’s interesting. I was supposed to privately try out but I messed up. Something crashed into me." "Who? Did the Slytherins fly onto the field, those jerks?" "No nothing like that." "Then who?" "An owl." she stared at me for a minute before she burst out laughing. I felt my whole face burn. "It’s not that funny." "Yes it is." she said between breaths. I stood up and walked over to Oliver. "How were Quidditch try outs?" I asked smoothing my skirt as I sat across from him. "It could have been worse." "Who are the chasers?" I asked. "Alicia Spinnett, Angelina Johnson, and Katie Bell." he said counting them out on his fingers. "Are they any good?" "No, I decided I only wanted bad players on my team." "If you’re going to get smart will me I’ll leave." I warned. He held up his hands in defense. I remembered something he had said from that terrible day. "Who’s your seeker?" "We don’t have one." he said turning his head and facing the fire. "Can you do that?" I asked. "I’m the captain I can do whatever I want." he said his face a bright orange. "But isn’t the seeker the most important player?" he shrugged. "If you don’t have a seeker won’t you lose?" "Not if we can score 160 points before the other team catches the snitch." "And you really think you can do that?" "We might be able to if you were one of our Chasers." he said turning back to me. "I already told you I don’t want to get on a broom for a long time." I said leaning back into the soft cushiony chair. "So you fell off you broom, my first game I was knocked unconscious for two weeks!" "I was dangling above the ground I was terrified." "Do you remember what I told you before you jumped on my broom?" "You said you would catch me." I muttered. "No, I promised I would catch you that I wouldn’t let you fall. I didn’t mean just for that one day, if you were on my team I would always catch you when you fall." "You’re a Keeper you have to watch the goals." "I meant that metaphorically, when I said me I meant the team. Basically any member of our team will stop and make sure a fallen player is fine. We want to win but we want to make sure everyone on our team is safe more." "What if I was a reserve player, in case one of you chasers can’t play I step in." "I don’t know, I don’t think my team will really like that." I could feel my blood boil. "Fine, then don’t tell me I would make a good addition to your team." I said standing. "Holly I was just kidding. Of course you could be on the team." "I don’t want to be! I was offering to be nice; maybe you should try to be nice once in a while." I stomped off to the girl’s dormitory.
"Can I sit here?" Oliver asked in Defense Against the Dark Arts. "No." he sat down any way. "I was kidding, I want you on the team I do." "I was being nice, I don’t feel comfortable on a broom, so the offers off the table." I said. A little into the lesson Professor McGonagall came by to see Oliver. I turned toward the door; if McGonagall wanted to see him he must have done something wrong. "P-p-pay attention c-c-class." Quirell sputtered. Oliver came back a minute later with a giant smile. "What happened are you in trouble?" I asked. "No, McGonagall found me a seeker. I’m going to train with him after class. But I want it to be a secret so don’t tell anyone Harry Potter is our new seeker." he whispered.
"Woods staring at you again." Sheryl said as we were eating dinner. "I don’t care, and why do you keep calling him Wood, his name is Oliver." "I don’t know I like Wood, it’s strong, tough, durable. Kind of like him." she giggled "Can I be a bridesmaid?" I said sarcastically. "Ha ha very funny. It’s totally obvious he likes you." "He does not; I already told you he’s mad I didn’t try out for the team." "Then wouldn’t he try to avoid you as opposed to stare at you, and he sits next to you in all our classes." "We're friends, friends sit together." "I’m your best friend and I won’t even sit with you. You never shut up and I can’t hear what the teachers saying, he obviously doesn’t mind having to repeat a grade." "Remind me which one of us is failing potions?" I said glaring at her.
I checked to make sure Oliver went back to the common room, I didn’t want him to see this. I made my way to the Quidditch pitch; I had an hour before I had to be in my common room. I took a broom out of the shed. I carefully mounted and flew up. I made sure to keep my eyes open for anything. I flew around the stadium, weaving in and out of the goal posts. "You had me fooled!" I spun around and tightened my grip on the broom. Oliver was hovering on a broom not but a few feet from me. "I-I-I just wanted to I..." I was at a loss for words. I zoomed toward the ground and jumped off. "Wait Holly!" I heard him yell still in the air. I felt him grab my arm and turn me around. "I saw you go to the common room." I said. "I wanted to grab my keeper gloves first, I thought you were afraid to get back on a broom." "I was for a while, but I missed flying." "Then join the team like you said as a reserve player." "Oliver I can’t...” he took both of my hands in his and held them close to his chest and looked me straight in the eyes. “Holly I need you!" I looked into those dark pleading eyes. "Okay." I said.
