Chapter 1
The Warriors of the Winter
There were five of them. None of them wore their usual battle armor. They stood upon the rise of the hill, and looked out over the small village of Kiroku. Each of them had exsisted for five thousand years, but was only seventeen in human years. They were the very essence of the word, 'legend'. For thousands of years, they had stood many a time upon the very same spot on which they now rested their calloused heels. No foe could touch them, they were unstoppable forebringers of joy throught the biting winter. Many had tried to conquer poor little Kiroku, but all fell, defeated, upon their own blades. In all of their years, the small band had protected the lands of Souru down to their very heart and soul against the toughest of foes. But they slumbered throughout seasons, waking to walk Souru only in winter. Such it is with supernatural beings. No one knew where they retreated to during their time of sleep, but they were not afraid without their soverigns, knowing that while the warriors slumbered bodily, their souls purged evil from the land while keeping a watchful eye on the people. The people nicknamed them, 'The Warriors of the Winter'. Their greatest weapon of all: their love.
The people loved them greatly, and the warriors loved back, but there were also those that wanted the Warriors of the Winter dead. They plotted in the depths of their insanity, obsessing over the defeat of the noble warriors.
The first was crouched low to the ground, a hand pressed to his stormy gray eyes. A shock of wild black hair framed his handsome, boyish face. He peered through his fingers, staring at Kiroku. He tried to ignore the agony of blood raging in his head, pure pain. Truth be told, it was a nightmare of a headache. He only got these headaches when the shadows came out to play. Nothing appeared to be wrong with the village, but the experienced warrior within him could tell that foul play was at work. "Lan." The second adressed him, concern written clearly across his face. "It's fine, Roy." Lan looked at him irrately. Roy nodded, his brown hair whipping in a fierce wind that only seemed to be blowing where he stood. His pale blue eyes didn't reflect the hurt that he felt. A quiet sigh came from a girl with waist length, flaming red hair. Her eyes were brown with gold flecks. She leaned up against a tree away from the others, singing inaudibly. Next to Roy, a girl with long blonde hair and green eyes was reading a book. A green hat rested upon her head, and a faint smile flashed across her lips as her eyes moved across the pages. The last of the five stood upon the peak of the hill, his toes hanging off the edge. A serious expression was painted in his red eyes, almost as sharp as the sword slung across his back. He had blonde hair that was black only at the tips. He wore a blue collar that seemed to belong to a dog. His name was Fey (NOT as in leoporchauns or fairys!), and he was the leader of the Warriors of Winter. It was almost time for them to fall into a deep slumber. "Alex," the red-haired girl looked up sharply, "Red," the girl reading reluctantly turned her head from her book, "Roy," Roy smiled pleasantly, "Lan," again lan peered out from between his fingers, "Let's go." Lan sprang to his feet, and with the others, he sprinted down the hill. Wings burst from his back, and ice formed on both sides of his face near his eyes. He closed in on Alex, and grabbed her waist, hauling her into the air just as she ran out of hill to run on. Despite herself, Alex gasped. "Cut it a little close there?!" She demanded, covering up her moment of weakness. Lan smirked. "Just wanted to make you scream, Princess. As usual, emotionless as a rock." He jested, wincing as pain lanced throw his brow. He wanted to scream, anything to make the terrible headache go away. But he held back. It was worse than ever before.
"Shut up." Alex blushed slightly, but told herself it was just the cold stinging her cheeks. Lan laughed. "Tongue of a snake..." she muttered. "What?" Lan asked, raising an eyebrow. "Nothing." Alex huffed, crossing her arms to keep herself warm. "You forget that we are flying miles above a town, and that I'm the one carrying you, Princess. Tell me, or I'll drop you." Lan stated. "You wouldn't." alex retorted. "Are you sure?" Lan loosened his hold on her, and grabbed on to one of Alex's small wrists with both hands. "You jerk!" Alex screamed. Lan's smile widened, and he let go. Alex's eyes widened with shock as she began to fall at an incredible rate. Lan let her fall for a little, than dived down, and pulled up again only after Alex was safely in his arms, bridal style. "Lan! Stop playing!" Fey chided. He was being carried by Red, who's wings shone a brilliant black in the sun's light.Technically, Fey had a hoverboard, but it was still being repaired from their last fight. Lan growled, tightening his grip on Alex a little, but he obeyed. "D-Demon!" Alex stammered angrily, pounding a fist against Lan's chest. "You look cute when you're angry." was all Lan would say. Roy was literally flying through the air. He hovered next to Alex and Lan. "Want me to take you?" he asked Alex, laughing. "yes, please!" alex didn't hesitate. A gust of wind ripped through Lan's arms, and Alex was propelled into Roy's. Lan growled, muttering. " 'The hell....." he pouted, angry that his toy had been taken, as his wings flapped rythmically.
The five landed on outskirts of town. Roy set Alex down, and then bowed. "Air Roy hopes you have enjoyed your flight. Please come again." he laughed, making Alex smile, but it didn't change the fact she was uncomfortable with any boy touching her. "Thanks." she backed away, ashamed. Roy nodded understandingly. "S'okay." he smiled. Lan touched down, still pouting as he furled up his wings, pressing them close to his back. Red landed, and put Fey down, then stepped back. Just then, Lan collapsed, howling and clutching his head. "Lan!" four voices screamed simaltaniously. An army of shadows descended upon the Warriors of the Winter. In their midst was a boy who wore a scarf pulled up over his mouth, which was surely smiling in satisfaction underneath the scarf's veil. He pointed at the overpowered warriors. "Go." he commanded. His leigon of shadows hurried to obey. One by one, the warrios were put into a deep, neverending slumber before they had a chance to draw their weapons. The boy had a deep hatred for Lan. He walked over and put two fingers upon Lan's brow. The boy plunged a sword into Lan's unprotected stomach. He watched in satisfaction as Lan screamed and withered under his hand. He turned the blade, asking it to dig deeper and deeper into Lan's flesh, stealing his life. "You will die slowly and painfully." the boy sneered, striding off into the sanctuary of the woods. "Zero-sama!" the shadows called, and followed dutifully. The boy smiled. "Yes. zero. that shall be my name, for I have zero enemies!" he laughed as he thought of conquering the whole world, and casting it into shadows. "yes. that will do nicely." his face twisted into a grin. "Finally, winter is at an end. Forever!"
"No.." Lan screamed weakly, sinking into chagrin. The face of a girl flashed into his weakened mind. Her dark black hair framed her face, and her blue eyes twisted into anger at the words of an unseen person. Her mouth moved rapidly as she undoubtly traded insults. She would be the one, Lan concluded. "Zero is wrong," he coughed up blood on the pure white snow, the first mark of zero's hand. "winter is just begun." he screamed once more, and coughed wildly as blood streamed from the corners of his mouth. He pulled the sword from his body with the last of his strength and held it up to the sun in a warrior's salute. He watched the pool of blood form around his body.
The people loved them greatly, and the warriors loved back, but there were also those that wanted the Warriors of the Winter dead. They plotted in the depths of their insanity, obsessing over the defeat of the noble warriors.
