Chapter 1

Intro

I walked around the diner, cleaning up tables and picking up whatever change I found on the floor, or tips that had been left for me. It was nice, having a job in lovely London, and I certainly hadn't expected to wind up in a place like this. I was from the U.S, or the States as English people referred to, and had just transferred here from my university as a study abroad student. I wanted to be an artist and waiting tables at the diner was just a small side job.

"Find anything Audrey?" Mr. Thomas, an elderly man in his 40's who was an amazing cook, asked.

I shrugged my shoulders and shook my head. "Not much, but I did find a rather pretty necklace." I walked over to the counter and showed him the necklace I found.

"Oh yeah, this is a nice locket, you could take it to a pawn shop and maybe earn a few pounds."

I laughed and stuffed it inside my pocket. "Oh no, money is no real use to me."

Just then a door in the employee's break room began to shake violently, or rather it was the handle, and there was pounding.

"Daddy I'm here!" a shrill girly voice whined.

Mr. Thomas rolled his eyes and groaned. "Audrey, would you like to be my step-daughter instead and replace that God-awful girl?"

"That's not very nice to say," I murmured and grinned, "but I do feel awfully sorry for you. I'll try to get her to leave."

Mr. Thomas kissed the top of my forehead and headed towards the front entrance. "Thanks Love, and remember, don't let her know where I'm headed." He left with a magazine in his hand and then shut the glass door. I took a deep breath and slapped a smile on my face.

"Hi Matilda," I chirped and opened the back door. She pushed her way past me and looked around the nearly empty diner. "Where's my father?"

"He had to step out for a smoke," I lied and cleaned the counter. She sighed and took a seat on a stool. "How long will he be out?"

"I dunno Matilda, why?" I asked her curiously. "Because," she sighed exasperatedly, "my Mum just bought me this CD and told me to ask Daddy if he could take me to meet this band."

I took the CD from her hands and examined the cover. "One Direction? What do they sing?" I asked flipping the CD back and forth with feigned interest.

Matilda glared at me and bulged her cerulean-blue eyes at me. "Where do you live? In the North Pole? Haven't you ever heard of them Audrey?" she sneered.

"In case you don't remember, I'm from the States and we don't listen to any boy-bands."

Matilda laughed and then instantly became friendly. "Oh, right that explains a lot. You silly American. Well I don't usually do this, but you can hold on to the CD for now. Listen to every track and then tell me what you think." She began to gather her things and slid the CD towards me.

"But Matilda I don'-" I managed to get out before she made a "zipping" gesture with her lips. "Shut up and do as I say. When you see my father, tell him I looked for him and will be back in a couple of hours, okay?"

I nodded my head and watched her leave the shop. Mr.Thomas was still out roaming the block and I was done with most of the cleaning. I waited a few more tables and didn't have anything else to do, so I decided to give the CD a try.

Stupid Matilda. She had taken out the CD booklet that usually comes with photos or lyrics to the artist, before she left, so I had no idea how One Direction might've looked like, or what they were saying. I groaned and inserted the CD in the stereo system that surrounded the shop.

The customers seemed to enjoy the music and didn't complain, so that was slightly surprising. I cleaned and waited while listening to the CD and soon enough, I slowly began to enjoy this mystery band.

I shook my hips and twirled around in the shop while dancing to a song that kept repeating "makes you beautiful" or something of the sorts, when a group of guys entered the shop. By now the volume level had increased from 3 to 10 so the music could be distinctly heard in the diner.

The males had sat a booth as far away from the windows as possible and sat hunched. I tightened my dark brown ponytail and strode over to the boys, trying to restrain my dancing.

"F-lonely-U-saw-what-eye-can-C..." I muttered under my breath as I waited for them to make an order.

One of the boys, curly-haired with blue-green eyes, laughed at my singing and looked at me with an amused expression. "Do you mind repeating that for me one more time?"

I quirked an eyebrow at him and shook my head, "I guess not." I waited for the song to play the part I had just sang and then took a deep breath,

"F-lonely-U-saw-what-eye-can-C..."

I sang while tapping my pencil on the notepad,

"...na na... understand why I want you ... something .... desperately..."'

I said unable to finish the words and making things up on the spot. The boys laughed and began banging on the table howling with laughter.

"Yes I get it, I'm a horrible singer and I don't know this song very well. Let's hear what you think it says."

A blonde haired boy smiled, cleared his throat, and corrected me.

"If only you saw what I can see, you'd understand why I want you so desperately..."

I ran my tongue over my teeth and pursed my lips. "Show off, " I said narrowing my eyes at him playfully. "Okay enough about me, what do you guys want?"

"I'll start off with-" a very handsome dark boy said before being interrupted by me. "Wait a minute-shh shh shh. Do you hear that?"

We all stood silent and I hadn't even noticed that we were the only ones in the shop. The boys looked at me as if I was crazy and gave me odd glances.

"No look, listen ," I said with emphasis. The music on the CD was quite a distraction, so I walked over to the system and turned it off. There was a noise that gradually began to increase and, at first, sounded like shrieking of some kind.

"Is someone hurt?" I whispered as the sound became more clear, and then there were more shriek-like noises. "Oh my God, what if something happened nearby?" I walked out of the shop, and noticed a group of girls running on the sidewalks and streets- almost as if they were heading here.

"Come here, look! Where do you think they're goi-" I was yanked by the waist and slumped over the blue-green eyed boy's shoulder.

"Quick- where's the nearest exit?" he said with urgency.

"In the back, behind the counter." I said going along and not protesting at all. "Wait, lock the diner up first though." I fished out my set of keys and gave them to him. He clumsily locked the front door and ran with me towards the backdoor entrance.

The other boys were running in front of us, and I think we were last because I was slowing the color-eyed boy behind. "What's your name?" I asked him with a slight shake in my voice since my body was basically bouncing everytime his foot pounded the ground.

"Harry," he replied with a huff. I was faced looking behind him, so as he ran, the diner faded slowly from my perspective and I no longer saw it.

"Harry, c'mon, they've got a taxi waiting for us," I heard a voice yell.

"Okay" Harry shouted. He picked up speed and I kept bouncing along. This was slightly uncomfortable and not to mention, awkward, but I was having some fun.

"We're almost there," Harry called over his shoulder and I patted his back in response. He stopped running and then switched me into a different position. I wasn't slumped over his shoulder, but carried bridal-style in his arms and I noticed the slight dampness of perspiration on his forehead. "You're sweaty," I giggled and wiped it away with the sleeve of my sweater.

"That's usually not the first thing girls remark about me," he said with a sly grin and then entered the taxi with me. It was a van, which was much more spacious, and the dark-haired boy slammed the door shut. The driver drove in no hurry, but didn't take his sweet time either, which gave us time to reflect on what just happened.

"Do you all have a phobia of a mass of screaming girls, or what?" I said breaking the silence.

Harry laughed and shook his head. "You're American, aren't you?" he said frankly.

"Is it that obvious?" I said feeling insecure.

"Yes, but you needn't worry Love," a boy said with a Justin-Bieber styled hair and blue eyes. "I'm Louis by the way and that's Zayn-" he pointed at Mr.Tall Dark & Handsome ,
"that's Niall-" the Blonde Cutie ,
"and this is Liam-" another curly haired boy with Honey looking eyes.

"It's nice to know the names of my Kidnappers," I replied cheekily. "I'm Audrey."

"Hello Audrey," they all sang in unison.

"Sorry about the whole thing back there, we'll explain everything on the way to our secret hideout," Liam said with a wink. I smiled uncontrollably and wondered,

What on Earth was I thinking when I came to work this morning?
