The Trip to The New Land
My name is Samantha Goldlocke. I was put on a ship heading from Spain to America, and the time is February 11th, 1534. I was with my master, Gunry Henry, before I was put on this ship. As I speak, my younger sister, Loretta, is put under his rule for a long while. I was put on this ship so my master, also known as my unworthy uncle, could have one less mouth to feed. My mother and father both died of hunger long ago. I am now 12. Loretta is now 8. This is my story.
"Samantha! Get up and work! You should have swept the porch already. Hurry up!"
I get up to the familiar dusty room. I got on my gray dress with patches in it. I put it on, and went to get the broom. Today was going to be a busy day. I moved the black broom slowly. Loretta was by my side, sitting down on the ground. She, luckily was too young to do chores, but in less than a year... She would be a slave, just like me.
We ate after I finished cleaning the porch. Loretta had much to learn. We were lucky to get meals every day, and we are able to read, at least a bit. Little did I know, this was the last day I'd ever see my Lorretta, sister in good times and in bad.
Three men came to see Master one day. They asked me if he was home. I said yes. They continued onward, into the house. Loretta snuck in and overheard bits of pieces of the conversation.
One asked if I could join the ship that was going on to the new land soon. He said that as hard of a worker as me was needed. She came and told me that I was to run off, and maybe not eat, or to follow these crazy men into the sea. I told her to wait. Maybe it was good. Maybe it was bad.
They carried me off to this ship. They called it The Roamer. The Roamer was my new home. I was signed into this new crew as a overall worker, an apprentice. To get settled into my home, that was hard.
