I only heard laughter in misty voices around me. I screamed in my mind, ripping my every thought. Notice me! Don’t you see me here? Don’t you see my heart breaking with every vicious insult thrown at me? I wanted, longed to cry, but deep in my heart, I knew I couldn’t show weakness. My bullies, my tormentors, my nightmares. Many known them as the popular boys of our school. I known them as devils from hell. But, their real name? The Marauders.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

I walked through the hall with my head down, my shoulders slacked. I flinched at every person who walked by. Surprisingly, nobody said or did anything to me. Don’t get me wrong. I knew they were talking about me behind my back. I imagined them giggling and snorting at my thin bleach hair, my slouchy appearance, and my oversized, dorky glasses. I don’t remember the last time I had a friend. Uh…ten years?

“Lookie who it is.” I hear a familiar, malevolent voice. My face flushed a ghastly white. I pushed up my glasses and reached for my wand. Uh oh…My wand! Where’s my wand? No, no, no! I must of left it in my room. A tear of stupidity shrunk over me. I deserved to die.

“Aw, somebody’s avoiding us? Come on, little Diggles.” Yes, my last name was “Diggles.” I wanted so bad to change it. They either called me by my last name or “Mousy” since I barely ever speak. But, why speak if no one would say something nice to me? I gave up on trying to defend myself in the third week of school. It is now the second day of fifth year. Sometimes I believed nobody even knew my real name, but I know they did. Or maybe they just didn’t remember. But, they definitely didn’t care.

But, I remembered my first year so well. It all started that day on that scarlet express. Or as I called, “One ticket to hell coming up. But, home wasn’t that swell either…

I slowly walked down the train isle with my head tucked into my chin and my hair covering my face. I sat in the first empty compartment I could find. I stared my refection down in the window. I faded glimmer of me and my bruised eye and busted lip haunted me. A great way to start school. Who would want to be friends with me? Like my mother always said, “Minnie, Minnie, Minnie, you never give up, don’t you?” No, I wouldn’t give up on making friends. My mum said it was like a curse. I couldn’t make friends. Yes, my mum hated me so much, she didn’t care about my feelings. Then again, she didn’t ask for me.

“Can I sit here?” a boy with light brown hair and faded scars over his face meekly smiled. I smiled, hopefully. This was my chance. Make a good impression, Minetta, I thought to myself.

“Of course! I’m Minnie,” I say with a cheeky smile.

“Remus,” he replies, kindheartedly. “I’m a first year. You?” I nodded. “What house do you want to be in?”

“Um…I don’t know. I’m muggleborn. What are the houses?”

“Well-” Remus started, but he was rudely disrupted by two black haired boys walking in to our compartment, laughing. After they got over what ever was so funny, they stared at me and the boy, Remus.

“Who are you?” they after me a tad bit impolitely.

“I’m Minnie. Nice to meet you…” I say, unsurely. The boys plopped down on the seat across from my, and I became uncomfortable. I am the one who asked for friends, was I not? “Comfortable?”

“Very,” the kid with slightly longer, more shaggy hair asked. “I’m Sirius.”

“And, I’m James.”

“Are you two brothers?” I ask.

“No, but I think we’re onto a good start as friends.”

“I’m Remus,” Remus said before returning turning his attention to me. “Anyway, the four houses our Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Gryffi-”

“I’m going to be in Gryffindor. My parents were there. House of the brave and smart,” James interrupted.

“My family was all Slytherin, but I’m going to break the cycle,” Sirius added.

“Anyway,” Remus tried, again, “Ravenclaw is the smart and clever house. But, just because you aren’t in Ravenclaw doesn’t mean your not smart. Slytherin,” James and Sirius scrunched there noses. I guess Slytherin wasn’t a likable house. “Is the house only for purbloods. There…um…there….”

“Evil? Rude? Annoying? Gits?” James suggested. Sirius nodded and they laughed.

“You’d fit right in,” I mumbled loud enough for only Remus to hear. He chuckled, and I smiled up.

“Anyway…” Sirius started. “What happened to your lip and-”

“Nothing,” I responded quickly. Changing the subject I added, “What about the last house, umm…what was it called again?”

“Hufflepuff,” Remus answered. “They are loyal and like fair-play. Those are the houses. I’m not sure where I want to be.”

“Hm, Ravenclaw sounds nice,” I said. James and Sirius exchanged glances and laughed like they could read each other’s minds. I bet they could. I could probably read their minds. They probably had the IQ of a toothbrush.

“What’s so funny?” I ask, offended.

“Nothing. It‘s just-” Sirius half said and half sung.

“Ravenclaw is fine….for geeks and nerds,” James finished. Oh, so now I’m a nerd? Well, my mother always told me I was too smart. Maybe I was. But, that is no reason to pick on me or an entire freaking house of people.

“Well, I’d love to be in Ravenclaw. Call me a “geek” or a “dork.” It’s better than being a selfish arrogant toerag,” I snarled back rising form my seat.

“Minnie…” Remus warned but was stopped by a rising James. He stared me in the eye. Luckily we were only eleven so I was a bit taller than him. My light green eyes pouring venom into his hazel ones.

“Well,” James said obviously not coming up with a comeback yet. “At least I’m not so hideous she was sitting here all along until I, trying to be nice, sat with you.”

“Nice?” I laugh, merciful. “You’re about as nice as nice as a indignant, self-conscious bully-oh wait, you are that!” We throw insults at each other until one of us storms out-me, of course.

My eyes drip tears of failure and grief and I begin my search for a new compartment. With my excellent hearing, I listen to the last thing I hear James say, “Remus, her or us? Because, if we have anything to do with it, she’ll have no friends at Hogwarts.” Remus never came after me, I already knew his decision. Who’d pick me over tons of friends?

“Way to go, Minette,” I whisper, quoting my mother. “Lost another opportunity. Didn’t you learn by now. You never give up, don’t you, Minette.”
