A New Jersey Girl's Christmas Miracle

A New Jersey Girl's Christmas Miracle

Reads: 3 | Chapters: 1 |

Christmas to Jessica Wing, is like Christmas to a hobo: no one's going to give her any presents, no one will so much as glance at her as they shop for others, and she can't really do anything about it. But, she finds that she has to take a second view of her situation; could this really be the great Christmas she's been looking for her entire life?

Chapter 1

Still, Still, Steady Snowfall

The snow fell softly outside the windowsill as Jessica sat and sighed, chin cupped in between her hands. Just another snowy day in New Jersey since like, the past 2 or 3 weeks, and just the same boring color, too. Why couldn't snow be purple? Or, maybe even orange? For God's sake, she wouldn't even care if it was black! But, WHY did it HAVE to be white? She knew it had to do something with weather condensation or a complicated thing like that, but it still puzzled her.
Just then, her little 6 year old brother Jothan, came crashing through her door, jumping up and down with the goofiest smile of his face. He was giggling too, and she knew he was excited. As if to ask about his presence, she raised her eyebrows, and he immediately responded, speaking as fast as a chipmunk.
"Jessica! Jessica! Mommy and I made cookies just now, and they're ready! Do you want some? I made a gingerbread girl that looks like you! I made the hair brown and everything, and - "
Jessica cut him short. "Jothan, what's your problem?" He looked at her in question, still jumping. She rolled her eyes. "You KNOW that Christmas here isn't anything special. I think THE WORLD knows it by now. So, if you're attempt was to come in here, try and get me hyped up for the season, and bribe my happiness with some cookies, then you mights as well turn back now." She made her message perfectly clear, but it didn't seem like Jothan completely understood it.
"What do you mean there's nothing good about Christmas? There's always presents to look forward to and food and parties and music and - "
"Jothan, don't you get it?! Christmas is a fake! It's just a big fat fake! A fake holiday! A fake happy season! A fake spirit, or joy, or...or...WHATEVER! There's nothing to look forward to, Jothan. You have your cookies now, but that's as far as it goes every year. Don't you see? It happens every year so why wouldn't it happen now?"
He'd stopped jumping, and now looked almost close to tears. As Jessica turned back towards the window, he left, head bowed and sobs only just beginning. When he'd gone, Jessica knew she'd probably just ruined most of his Christmas for him. But hey! It's better that he learned earlier, before he fell for the same mistake every year.
Why couldn't her life be like the snow? The snow, that fell so steady, and merrily, without a care in the world that a storm could overpower it at any moment? The snow, with its beautiful milky color and soft, soft texture, just made the world feel like a warm child under its blanket. The blanket of snow now covering her house in its blanket, was trying to warm her. Was trying to heat her up. What trying to get her so hot, she'd explode. But not today. She was riled: she definitely was. But this blanket of snow would no longer engulf her.
Jessica got up to go outside.
