My story of the seeker.

Chapter 1

The beginning.

by: xXAmberXx
Hot embers bite at the seeker's bare feet and smoke stings her eyes as she races through the burning forest. She closley dodges a flaming, falling tree and is set off track. The seeker runs faster than before but she still feels a burning in her chest and her side aches. Her mouth is dry and her feet sting almost more than her eyes. The seeker can barely see a thing so it doesn't suprise her when she falls to her hands and knees, after tripping over a large object... a fallen tree? She doesn't know. She gasps for air and can hardly breath, hardly see. She coughs and smoke fills her lungs. The seeker is afraid, only twelve years old and searching for something that she doesn't want to find. She glaces around and her vision is blured by the smoke around but she sees the flames closing in around her... almost hunting her. She squeezes her eyes shut. The seeker wants to give up. She wants to lay there and let her body go up in smoke, like the rest of the living in this forest. She is stronger than that. The seeker pulls herself up to her feet with a moan of pain. A flaming branch hits her arm and she lets out a yelp. Not thinking, she swats at the fire that attemps to swallow the forest. Pain seizes her whole body and again she lets out a moan of pain. She falls back down with a wimper. I'm going to die like this. All alone. I will perish in the fire. Worst death... all alone. Yes, soon I will just be ashes. My spirit will haunt the forest. All alone... alone.... alone... all alone...
The seeker wants to fall into the bed of ashes. To give up still, but she doesn't have enough courage. She doesn't have courage to give up or to push on. She kneels there, afraid and unsure. Cornered. Alone. All alone. She hates being alone. She gulps the choking air and pulls herself to her feet. The seeker runs. Slowly... but moving. She is alive. The seeker runs until she can run no more. She comes to a field, completely on fire and the only way to a big river. The seeker runs through with another wimper. She is wraped in a large cloth, like a black sheet wich she pulls up, so it doesn't catch fire. Oh, the pain. She runs fast now but is close to her death. Then before she knows it the chill of the river washes over her as she plunges down. She opens her burning eyes and sees the bright blur of light above her head. The surface. Ripples bounce around beutifuly. Her long black hair flows, contrasting with her pale white skin. All to soon, her chest achs for air. Soon the seeker must surface. She gives a fast and powerful kick, the surface was so close. So close. She is happy now, not for long. If she had air she would be panting with effort. She has no air. She swims hard and soon breaks out of the peacefulness of being under water. As soon as she breaks free she stares up at the dark, smoke sky. The air thbat she longed for underwater was different from the air she recived, stuffy, not fresh. She gives a sigh, treading water. While she had been under, there had been a drop-off. She was five feet and a bit more than four inches tall and twelve years old, if she followed the time and hight of the new world. She lives in the time of city just like today but in a forest, where she has spent her life without family or any other humans. Still, she can't see or touch the bottom of theriver any more. It soon comes to her that she is drifting, more like rushing along with the current. Just get across. Get to where the forest is still green. Get to where the forest is safe. The forest is never safe, safer is a better word. She coughs, again and swims as strong as possible but still flying down river. Is that... is that a branch? She doesn't know. A wave washes over her and she reaches out, her hand slips against twigs and leaves but is to late to grasp on. She holds only air. A waze washes over her again and when she surfaces, she is is far of, the current has taken her and now she can't see any landmarks. The elements have turned against her.`
The seeker found herself thinking of her quest. The one she set herself on. She wants to give up. She doesn't want to find what she seeks anymore. She fears the truth she once desired. Her family, her spieces, she used to want to find them. But would they want her? They left her. Alone. She hates to be alone. Did they know that? Was in an accedent that they left her? Or was it not an accedent... did they mean to leave her? Why would they do that. She wasn't a runt. She knows she wasn't.
Again she felt a branch. Grasping it in her hand, tightly. She trys to pull herself up. SNAP! No use, she tumbles back, holding a broken twig. She can't think, what to do? She wanted to call on her friends but what could a wolf do? Or a bear? Do they swim? Maybe even her own kind. The humans. She tryed to call out but is thrown under water again. No use! Help! Help me. Anyone... please. She called for help in her head. No use. No use, no use, no use! She screamed inside her head. She wanted to cry. She both wasn't brave enough and was to brave to cry also. Why not? She began sobbing. The seeker screamed aloud and threw herself sideways, not knowing what she was doing. Then pain. Pure pain. She had hit hard rock. Oh! She clambered out of the water and laid out, draped over a rock. Soon she blacked out.
The seeker opened her eyes, the image slowly came into focus. Still, she lay draped over the same rock, shivering. It was sunrise, just as it had been as she had passed out. Or was it not? Had it been eavning or even night. She hadn't been able to tell then. Now the smoke was less and the fire was out, leaving one side of the river a lush forest and one side charcol and burnt trees. Remembering the day... or night before, she shivered and this ttime it had nothing to do with the freezing cold. Oh, she could remember the flames closing in her but they seemed as blury as the world has when she had first opened her eyes. She seeker gives a sigh of frustration, the water still rushing. Her feet bob up and down in the river. She has the strenth now to at least glance he crawls up again with a groan of frustration. She unsteadly stands her tip toes and reaches up to grasp ahold of a strong-looking branch. Got it! She leaps in the direction of it swiming and using it to drag herself to real dry land. She scrambled up the cliff, just a few feet high. In the end, she figured that she could just sleep for another six hours right then and there. She doesn't. She is smart. The seeker sighs and sets off for breakfast.
No food? No food. No food! She doesn't recognize a single plant... or animal. So strange! She sighs, annoyed. Oh, now she's stranded with nothing to eat. The seeker finds a birch tree after much searching. She has always used birch for shelter... shelter! Oh no! She had forgotten. She finds some fermiliar roots, bitter sweet and chewy. ten of them are barely a mouthdful, she sighs and chews for a while. She notices a few berries on a vine. Unrecognizable. She eats them anywayse, and quiet unwizly. She finds som peas and pops them into her mouth, they are bitter and make her stumach hurt, or is it the strange berries? She doesn't know. Soon it's dark. Where to sleep? Build a shelter? To long and tireing. An abonded den? She crawls in, her whole body pressed together and her back pressed uncofterably. She drifts off into troubling dreams.
The seeker awakes from her nightmare with a gasp, attemting to get up in a hurry. Her back bangs up against the wall of the tiny animal den, she falls down to the cold dirt, surrendering to the tight space, staying still. She is so afraid, shuddering in the darkness. She doesn't want to find her kind, now the seeker am more sure of it then ever. She wants to sleep dreamless but knows she wont. The girl lays there her black eyes open, forcing herself to stay awake in the uincofterable space. All to soon she awakes, not even bremembering drifting to sleep. Still, she remembers different troubling dreams. She doesn't remember what happened in the different dreams. Just remembers fealings, fear, worriedness, unbelonging. Is there anywhere that I truely belong? It's soon clear to her that she does't belong in her own kind's cummunity. Nor in the forest. Or does she? Oh, but how could a child without expiriance of that sort know anything about her belonging. She soon finds herself going off to find what she doesn't want to find. She wants to turn back but just cannot, as if something is pulling her to search. She races off into the lush forest. Leaves crackle below her feet, birds caw, almost laughing at her as she stumbles, oh this is not going to be a pleasant journey!
How long has she been running? The sun is high overhead, it burns at the back of her neck and at her back, covered by the black cloth. her feet begin to sting, not like as she ran through the fire, but painful. She sighs. Maybe she should'ave gone the other way. No, this is right. She knows it, somehow. Her mother would surely recognize her, right? What if her parents are no longer living...dead? She doesn't want to think about it but really. What if. What if.... And what if they dont want her?
She shivers at the thought. The seeker stops in her tracks at the sight of a faun, laying in he grass. A kill smell hangs in the air. The seeker leans over the deer, feeling it's cold body. Suddenly, a loud bang fills the air. A gunshot.
