Unseen, Unheard, Undetected
This is a fan-fic of Ranger's Apprentice. I'm doing this story with Blue (Jo_ann_Sparrow). Hope you enjoy it.
Chapter 1
Future can be a Fickle Thing
"Glora!" some-one shouted, I groaned when I realised who it was. Not a moment later Greggory came bursting through the door of the room and threw the itchy blanket off of me. "Glora! They're choosing us in under two hours! Why are you still in bed?" had Greggory always towered over me like that or had he shot up over night.
"What the?" I said out loud, he scrowled and pulled my elbow until I flopped down onto the hard wooden floors. I looked next to me at Jean who was lacing up her good boots and she smiled at me. I sighed and picked myself off from the cold floor. "Out!" I shouted at Greggory and he turned rather pompously and out the door. I closed it behind him and reluctantly got dressed.
five minutes later I was shuffling behind the small group of children heading towards the castle of Redmont. I looked around carefully at the seven children around me. I was thin and wiry, I barely reached the tallest one's shoulder. My long brown hair had been pulled out of my face in an attempt to look presentable but had failed miserably, my eyes, which were the same colour as my hair, kept darting from side to side in the hopes that something would save me from the embarrasment that was sure to befall me.
This was the day that would decide our future, all children at the age of fifteen who did not already have careers set out for them could be taken as an apprentice by the masters of Redmont on this day. I was really nervous, I had no interest in any of the apprenticeships. I was bound to be rejected by them all, I didn't really have any desirable skills.
I just trudged behind the other children and finally we walked into Redmont castle. I sighed and a boy with a booming voice said," cheer up little one, there'll be a job for you". My face turned red at being called little one but then decided he was trying to be nice.
The butler showed us to the room where we would be getting chosen. It was a large room without a lot of furnishings, a large desk faced a huge window and a towering book shelves lined the walls. It was all very finely crafted although it told you that the Master of Redmont was a man who didn't care for silk and velvet or any of those over rated materials. The man in question was standing in front of the desk with an assortment of other people.
I slipped to the back and waited for the masters to reject me. One by one people were sorted into appropiate careers, then no one was left but me. The looked at me with critisiam in their eyes and my future bravery had suddenly abandoned me. I watched desperatley as they each shook their heads in turn, I crumbled inside when finally no one was left and a tear leeked from my eye.
They looked at me in pity and I furiously wiped the tear away. The master was sweating heavily, then some one in a mottled green cloak handed him a letter, he sighed and read it. I didn't get to see the person before they slipped out of the room. I hadn't noticed he was in the room. The master finished the letter, he looked so much more relaxed.
"Unfortunatly, Glora Humble, no one has accepted you so... well that's it", another tear came and once again I wiped it away," Well direct them out", he told the butler softly then he walked over to his desk.
The butler lead us outside again and we were free to go back home. I was the only one with curiousity burning in the mind. I needed that letter, I knew it had something to do with me.
I lay awake that night, listening to the steady snores of Jean and the rest of the household. I'd waited for a least an hour, now was time to act. I pulled the itchy blankets off of me, I was already dressed in my most worn boots, dark tunic and black trousers, I had my knife on my belt. I slowly made my way to the door.
I stood at the base of the castle, staring up at the huge walls and the challenge it would be climbing it. No use in fretting. I grabbed a stone that was slightly sticking out, then I found another and another. This was easier than I thought, then came the guards.
I squished myself against the wall when a guard walked up to the wall without warning. He peered out into the silent night, he stood for a few seconds more then turned around and walk away. I waited a couple seconds more then began climbing again.
I ducked, climbed and swung my way the window of the master's study. The light of the moon poured into the room and I saw the letter laying on his desk. I slipped my fingers under a panel in the window and it swung outward. I had to grab the sill quickly so I didn't fall twenty feet. I climbed in and dropped to the wooden floor, then winced at the echo it created. I waited silently for a minute before continuing towards the letter, baby step by baby step. I nearly ran up to the letter but controlled myself, I finally reached it and picked it up.
I sudden thought struck me, this is too easy. Then out of the shadows stept the man from before.
"Hello Humble".
