Prologue/Chapter I: Strange Things

Prologue

Prince Zuko sped around a bend as fast as he could, kicking up dust and leaving it behind him. Zuko and his uncle Iroh had somehow ended up in the middle of the desert while chasing after Azula, Zuko's younger sister, who had stolen something very valuable to Zuko.

Right behind the poor Prince was his enemy, Admiral Zhao and his guards. They had encountered each other while Zuko and Iroh were looking for someplace to stay overnight. Admiral Zhao had wanted the young prince dead for a long time, now he finally had his chance.

Zuko, not really paying attention to where he was going, ran right into the entrance of a dark pyramid. He ran until he had reached a very dark dead end. He looked around, trying to find a way out, but was unsuccessful. Suddenly, he heard pounding footsteps behind him. He spun around to face Admiral Zhao and his guards.

"Got any last words before I dispose of you, Zuko?" Zhao sneered, his voice dripping with venom. Zuko gritted his teeth, his heart pounding. He knew this was the end for him. But before Zhao laid a finger on him, he wanted to say something.

He gulped hard, feeling the tears coming to him. He took a deep breath, then said, "Before you kill me, I want to say something. Deep in my soul, I have a feeling that someone somewhere out there in the world is going to bring me back. And when I return, I'll make sure you never see the light of day again."

At the last word, Zhao shot a large burst of flame at the poor young Prince. The fire tore at his body as he screamed in pain, the tears falling down his cheeks. Bursts of flame after flame were shot at him, until finally, he fell to the ground and took his last breath.

The shadows of the flames danced on the walls in the dim light as the young prince's body burned.

Chapter I

3 Months Later

Violet's POV

I slept heavily as the Art teacher, Mr. Arte, talked about different artists from way back to whatever. My hand rested on one cheek as I slept quietly away.

"Violet." my teacher's voice called softly. "Violet? Violet." No avail. I was gone like the wind. I heard some kids snicker as I also heard somebody get up. Then suddenly, someone smacked me hard on the back with something. My eyes shot open as I felt the first burst of pain. "YEEOOOWWW!!!" I cried, rubbing my back. Kids shrieked with laughter, but Mr. Arte shook his head solemnly. He didn't like it when kids made fun of other kids.

Danny Elegro, a very mean bully of a kid, fell onto the floor laughing his head off. He was holding a wooden ruler, which I guessed he used to hit me with. I grew angry, and grabbed the ruler out of his hand. "How would you like a-" I snarled, but was interrupted by Mr. Arte. "Violet, please, not today." he sighed. I growled but obeyed him anyway.

Art was the last class of the day, so when the final bell rang, everybody had shot up from their seats and ran out of the school, leaving me sprawled on the ground, trampled, bruised, and really annoyed.

I was the last one out of the school (obviously). I made my way back to my house, where I wouldn't have to worry about that jerk Danny. My entire 7 years of this place, Danny has been the only one who always gave me busted lips, bruises, etc. He managed to break my wrist one.

I made it home in one piece (luckily). Usually, after school days, Danny and his pals would run over and beat the crap out of me until I had a bloody nose or something. I wished there was some way to get back at them. I really do.

After getting into the house, I locked the front door up behind me. I wouldn't be going out again tonight. I threw my backpack onto the couch and went upstairs to change into my pj's. Hours later, it was nearly 8:00 at night. I decided to make myself some dinner.

I jogged downstairs to the kitchen and fixed myself a bowl of Recess Puffs. I sat down in the living room with my dinner and turned on the TV.

After dinner, it was 8:45. Time for bed. I put the dishes in the dish washer, then turned off the TV. Then, I went upstairs to bed. I only hoped I wouldn't have nightmares tonight, like I always do.

At 3:30 AM, I heard my shower go on. Why is my shower on? I wondered, too tired to really care. I groaned, then slowly got out of bed. I went into my bathroom and just like that, I turned my shower off, eyes half-closed. I went back to bed, hopefully I wouldn't be kept awake for the rest of the night.

At 4:45 AM, my alarm clock went off. Only, it didn't make it's usual BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. Instead, it made the ice cream truck music that us kids always hear during the Summer.

I raised my head slowly, giving my alarm clock a "What the heck" look. Things are certainly weird this morning. I thought. First my shower, now my alarm clock. What's next, a feeling that somebody's stroking my back? I shut my alarm off, then tried going back to sleep.

Just as I had thought, I felt somebody rubbing my back. "What the-" I cried, immediately sitting up and looking around on my bed. But I saw nobody there. What the heck!? I thought, confused and a bit annoyed.

I let out an angry growl and laid back down, hoping nothing else would happen. Then, just as I was about to fall back asleep, I heard a soft laugh. It sounded like a male. I frowned, wondering if I was only hearing things or not. The laugh came again, and this time, I bolted up and looked around. "Who's there?" I asked in the darkness of my bedroom. No reply.

Suddenly, my window flew open and a gust of wind came through, blowing the curtains like ghosts. I jumped down from my bed, and ran toward the window. I slammed it shut and locked it. Questioning thoughts ran through my head, giving me a headache.

I went back to bed and pulled the blankets over me. Strange things are happening around here. I thought. Then, sleep took over me and I was silent the rest of the night.
