Moving Up

"28...29...30!" she said as she dropped from the pull-up bar and grabbed a towel to wipe her face.

"Very nice, Gyure. Go cool down before we head to the shooting range." Sgt. Gregory Parker said as he jotted down her score on his clip board, "Hancock, you're up!"

"Hey, how'd you do Mike? asked Erin Campbell when she caught up with her.

"Pretty well I guess. I got a "good job" out of the Sergeant, so I'm hoping that's a good sign." Michaela said modestly as she and Erin headed for the break area, "Do you want to grab a snack before we head to the marksmanship test?"

"Sure. I'm beat. That tactical test took a nice bite out of my pride, and my energy level."

"You didn't do that bad. Your team still beat 4 of the others. The only reason you didn't get under 3 minutes was because Carson couldn't hit a target 10 inches in front of his face!" Michaela said reasurringly as she grabbed 2 bottles of water from one of the coolers.

"Yeah we beat 4 out of 10. Your team got 1st! Again! Why can't we ever get paired up?" Erin asked as she tore open her granola bar wrapper and took a bite.

"It may have something to do with the fact that it goes alphabetically, and I'm a "g" and you're a "c"." Michaela said with a smile, "Let's head over to the shooting range. I need to get a feel for the targets."

"Okay! I just LOVE being everywhere 20 minutes early!" Erin said with faux enthusiasm.

"Oh, come on Erin!" Michaela said to her friend as they heade to the shooting range, "You know you want this just as much as I do, so quit complaining and let's kick some butt!"

Meanwhile...

"Why did we have to do it today? Why today?" Spike said to himself as he sat down in the locker room.

"I know it's been rough, but we've got to move on Spike. No one was as close to him as you, but we all miss him." Wordy said as he finished buttoning his gray SRU shirt.

"But he was my best friend! He's been gone for exactly 1 month, and we're already trying to replace him! No one can take his place." Spike said angrily.

"We don't want to replace him. You know that, Spike! But all teams have to have 7 members, and we need to be up to par so we don't end up benched." Ed explained "We're the best here, and we're needed. If we can't be our best, we won't be able to do our job."

"I just don't understand why it had to be today." Spike said as he finished lacing his boot.

"I've lost people, too Spike. And it doesn't get any easier, but moving on is the best thing you can do." Sam said when he closed his locker after looking at the picture of he and his best friend. The picture had been taken the day his friend was killed. By him, 2 kilometers away.

"Can we change the subject? Please?" Spike asked as he tried to stop the tears.

"Sure. So how'd your movie night go Wordy? Did the Prince Charming wake up Snow White?" Ed teased as he closed his locker.

"For your information Eddy, we watched Cinderella last night, not Snow White. And if it means spending time with my girls, I'll watch Cinderella every night of the week." Wordy said defensively, "So how did your date with Jules go, Sammy?"

"Fine. We had dinner at "Paganini's" and saw "Postcards to Merlin" in the theater. The movie was okay, but the popcorn was actually REALLY good. It was strange, because usually I hate the taste of it, but it was good this time." Sam replied, trying to change the subject. He and Jules had tried to keep their relationship a secret, but blue paint had put and end to that, so now their were out in the open with their feelings.

"Team One, hot call!" came Winnie's voice over the loud speaker.

"Let's go guys!" said Ed as he lead the team out of the locker room, "C'mon Jules! You'll ride with Spike." he added as he passed Jules' locker room.

"Got it, Ed. Meet you at the truck Spike!" she yelled from her locker room.

"Winnie, let the applicants know that they should wait for me in the briefing room. They can train if they want, but warn them not to waste their energy." Parker instructed Winnie as he ran by her desk.

"Will do, Boss." she replied as she prepared to make the announcement over.

"Alright team, let's keep the peace!" Parker said when he caught up to the rest of the team.
