Chapter 14
Babeh
“Now I've been right across the seven seas, lookin' for a girl from another fantasy. I keep a big ship, they call me Captain Kid. I got the eyepatch trihat rolling like a pirate!”
“Shiver me timbers, fvck ya til you're limber. Freaky deaky til you get leaky,” Sally joined in.
“Like run DMC, it's tricky, so animated might as well call me Mickey!” came Jared. I smiled and kept the song going. We were spring cleaning my apartment. I would have been doing it myself, but since Sally and Jared practically lived here, they helped. It's May. My birthday's next month!
“Sally, where's the paper towels?”
“I don't know. Use a rag!”
“I can't. It's a window.”
“Right here.” Jared tossed them to me. I caught them, smiling as I remembered last time paper towels were thrown around me. It seemed like a million years ago. Sally walked into the kitchen with an armload of dishes. I scooted over so she could put them in the sink.
“Ow,” she said.
“Stub your toe?” I asked her.
“No, Tom.”
Oh, Tom. Time of month. I turned back to the window, but after a second I dropped the Windex.
“Oh. My. God,” I said, sitting on the counter.
“What is it?” Sally was immediately worried. I put my face in my hands.
“How long has Tom been going?” I asked her.
“Three or four days.”
Oh God. I put my face back in my hands. Sally and I had always been in sync.
My period was late.

“Are you sure?”
“No, but there's a good chance.”
“Didn't you guys use protection, though?”
“Yeah. I think.”
“You think?”
“Well, it happened kind of fast....”
“Did you take your pill?”
“I just use the pill for hormone balancing.”
“Did you take it or not?”
“I don't think so.”
“Why not?”
“I didn't have any mood problems. Plus, I didn't expect to lose my virginity.”
“You're supposed to always take it!”
“Yeah, and I'm supposed to take my vitamin too. I forgot.”
“How can you forget something as important as birth control?”
“I don't know. I just did. I forget things all the time, Sally.”
****************************************************************
I knocked on Walker's door. He opened it. “Amber?”
“I need to talk to you,” I said, pushing past him. It looked like the apartment was empty.
“About?” Walker followed me into the living room.
“Did you use protection?”
“Well, uh...”
“Shiit!” I threw a pillow across the room.
“What is it?” Walker asked, confusion clear on his face. It amazed me that he was that stupid.
“Put the two and two together, Walker.” I watched his eyes widen as he did the math.
“You're – you're – “
“Quite possibly.”
“So I might be a dad?”
I sighed. “Yeah, you might.”
He swept me up in a hug. “If I am, I'll be the best dad ever.”
“I'm sure you will,” I laughed. I wasn't sure if I wanted to be pregnant or not. Part of me wished I wasn't, but another part wished I was. Walker and I were still hugging when I heard a voice.
“Holy shiit!” exclaimed Darren.
