"Mama"Antonia called from the kitchen."Why are we at war with the south anyway?"
"Well,Antonia, they believe that people should be sold and enslaved if they are not white,so they formed a little thing they call the Confederate States of America.President Lincoln doesn't think that's right so he formed an army to make the eleven states that believe in slavery back down"said Antonia's mother."Why do you ask?"
"I figure that if Papa is fightin' I should now why"replied Antonia.She went back to washing the dishes.She sang the song her father had written for her the year he left."I'll be home soon enough,don't you worry.I'll be comin back some day,The stars will shine as bright as the sun.Don't you worry,anymore"
Just then Veronica walked in and saw Antonia washing the dishes and immediatly ran back upstairs.She was never one for chores.Antonia giggled and thought about the time that Veronica put on one of her dresses and walked around the house saying that she was a big girl and she didn't have to do chores.Veronica was four and very imaginative."Veronica,come downstairs Mama wants you to help her up to the dinner table"I yelled.Mama was pregnant with our new sibling and she needed help with just about anything.Veronica often said that Mama was as puffed as a marshmallow."Okay sissy I'm comin downstairs"I heard.Moments later I heard footsteps and Veronica sped into the sitting room.
