Chapter One
Rosabelle was lying on the grass making daisy chains as I approached her. She looked up at me, grinning. I lay down beside her, sighing.
“You lucky thing!” Rosabelle cried, fiddling with a strand of my hair. “He’s like, so gorgeous! Did he talk to you? Did he?” I sighed, this was so typical Rosabelle.
“Yes. Yes, he did,” I groaned, knowing she was going to ask me for every last detail. Before she could, Drake started approaching us from a distance. Rosabelle squealed, forgetting me and Drake’s short conversation, primping her bleached blonde hair, applying lip gloss and flinging off her jacket.
“How do I look?” she asked, fluttering her eyes at me. I turned away from Drake, glared at her, and I heard him speak behind me.
“Lexi, may I talk to you for a moment?”
I shot Rosabelle one last glare before turning to face him. He wasn’t smiling, yet he didn’t look grumpy. I stood up, hearing Rosabelle speak.
“Lexi honey, you’re not gonna just leave me here, are you?” I rolled my eyes, causing Drake to smile.
“Yea, I am,” I muttered, walking off with Drake. He didn’t say anything for a while, but he seemed to be leading me somewhere, so I stayed quiet too. Eventually he stopped, turning to face me. Looking straight into my eyes, he spoke up.
“Lexi, was that your friend?” I paused for a moment, embarrassed. He probably thought she was stuck up and unworthy of a friend. But I couldn’t lie to him, I was too nervous.
“Yea, it was,” I mumbled, refusing to look into his eyes anymore. He sighed, and I tensed ever so slightly. Did he think of me differently now? I closed my eyes, imagining his smiling face, his minty white teeth, his sparkling emerald eyes, and relaxed. When I opened my eyes, he was grinning again, a mischievous, dark grin.
“Okay,” he finally replied, looking into my eyes again. Nervously, I played with a strand of my hair, waiting for him to speak again. He was looking at me as if he was expecting me to say something.
“Uh... was that what you wanted me for?” I mumbled quietly. He thought about my question carefully, and after what seemed forever, he replied.
“No.”
I didn’t know why it took him so long to reply, it was a simple question. We stood staring at each other for a while awkwardly, before I spoke again.
“So what did you want?” I spoke up, giving my most earnest look.
He didn’t reply. Instead, he walked off, leaving me utterly confused. I checked what class I had next, and groaned. Drama... and that meant Drake had to see my disgraceful acting skills. I sat alone in the corridor, wondering whether to go out and see Rosabelle or wait for the bell to ring. I put my head in my hands, frustrated. My only friend was Rosabelle, and we never talked much anyway! I groaned loudly, trying to seek something that wasn’t so... depressing.
** * ** * ** *
“Right, everyone!” Miss Thompson yelled loudly. “This school is known for its arts and its astounding drama, so let’s live up to our reputation!” She was looking into my eyes as she said it so I scowled quietly at her.
“Ugh,” I mumbled, breathing in angrily and exchanging glances with Rosabelle. Drake saw this, and smirked. Glaring at him, I thought about his words yesterday. “I wish I could like you, Lexi Price. Sadly, I can’t.” What did this mean?! The bell started ringing, and Miss Thompson frowned. The lesson had only started a few minutes ago, so why was it ringing? Miss Thompson stared out the door for a second.
“Fire alarm,” she said clearly and boldly. “Everyone out now, to the hockey pitch and wait in alphabetical order.”
“Great,” Drake grinned, suddenly at my side. “Looks like you’re beside me, Lexi Price and Drake Parke.” He winked, causing me to scowl back at him.
“Woah, girl,” he smiled, “Looks like someone had a bad night’s sleep. Guessing you didn’t go to sleep until... three in the morning when your Mum forced you to?” I gasped and stared at his perfectly innocent face. He winked at me again.
“Who- what? How did you know that?!” I said, shocked. He grinned again and took my hand.
“I’m magic. Now, come on,” he laughed, taking me out the door as if he knew this school better than I did.
* * * * * * *
“Mum! I’m home!” I shouted up the stairs. My Mum appeared at the top of the staircase immediately and clambered down them.
“But... honey! School doesn’t end for another two or three hours!” she said, utterly confused. I sighed, not knowing how to tell her.
“Uh... the school caught fire... in the cafeteria... uh... yea,” I mumbled, unsure about how she’d react. She didn’t say anything at first, and I thought it’d go well. I was wrong.
“WHAT?! Oh honey, you’re safe, yes? Oh God, My God, oh, I have to take some pills...” she started, and wondered off towards the kitchen. I have tried to tell her not to take drugs, but she doesn’t listen. She says they make her feel better, but she’s too broken to be repaired. Instead of trying to persuade her, I ran into my room and screamed. She was going to die from this someday! She was going to bloody die! I pounded my fists into my bed until they started to bleed and I started to cry tears of anger.
“Damn you!” I yelled, screaming. “Damn you!” I heard her screaming back at me, but I couldn’t make out what she had said. She was sick and she took illegal drugs. My Dad was never there for me. Rosabelle wasn’t a true friend and my own teacher enjoyed making things worse. My life was worth nothing. I wiped my tears away and stared in the mirror. My mascara was smudged and my jet black hair looked greasy. My skin looked sweaty and my eyes looked too dark. I started to cry hopelessly again. Nothing was going to get better. Nothing could get better. I was dark and alone. I stared at myself in the mirror again, and in such hatred, I shut my eyes and looked into the darkness. Concentrating on nothing, I heard something smash.
I jumped and opened my eyes, and I wasn’t in my room anymore. I was in nowhere. I saw wisps of smoke float past my face in the black and strange noises were everywhere. In the distance was a figure, standing perfectly still. I ran towards it and tripped, falling through the ground until... I landed in someone’s arms. They felt strong, yet safe, but they set me back on the ground... whatever the ground was.
“Hello, my Lexi,” a familiar voice sounded. “Welcome to my... world.” It was Drake. I gasped and took a step back. “Oh, don’t be afraid, Lexi. I’ll put you back when you want.”
“Let me back now then!” I snapped. “Drake.”
“Lexi,” he laughed. “I’ll see you at school tomorrow, yes?”
“It’s burnt,” I moaned. “Now let me go back!” He smiled mysteriously and clicked his fingers. As everything started to fade, he murmured;
“It’s not burnt anymore, Lexi.”
I opened my eyes, gasping.
I was in my room, leaning against my bed. What the hell had just happened? I looked in the mirror and suddenly, my hair wasn’t greasy anymore. It was shiny and glossy, and my make-up was perfect, as if I’d just applied it. I checked my watch, it was morning time. My clothes had also been changed somehow, so I called my Mum.
“What am I doing today?” She came in and frowned, as if I’d gone mad.
“School, of course. Why would you not be going to school?” she cocked her head to one side, confused.
“But... the school... what?” I asked, remembering what Drake had said.
“Go on, dearie. Be quick, you’ll be late,” she laughed. I picked up my schoolbag and walked to school slowly, in deep thought. Maybe she had forgotten about it being burnt down? I felt like an idiot, but I saw other people from my school walking too, with a perfectly normal expression on their faces.
When I got there, the school looked the same. Nothing was different about it; it didn’t even look like a fly had harmed it. Drake appeared behind me suddenly. I didn’t know how, but I knew it was him.
“What do you want?!” I scowled, turning to face him. He smiled.
“Surprised?” he asked, briefly looking at the school then back to me.
“Drake... what happened last night?” I asked, completely bewildered about everything.
“The school never burnt down Lexi,” he murmured. “It wasn’t even harmed by fire. Remember that.” And with that, he walked away. I stared after him, not knowing what to say... what to do! Rosabelle spotted me from the distance, and ran towards me.
“Lexi!” she sang. “Oh, sweetie, he was talking to you again! The sweetheart. He’s so hot, isn’t he?! I think he likes you. Those eyes, that hair... oh my God! You lucky thing.”
“Rosie,” I laughed. “I don’t think he likes me. I think... well, uh...” She smirked, winking.
“Oh honeybee, well, I’m off. I gonna talk to Francesca, she wants me to be on the cheerleading’ team!” I glared at her as she trotted off. Francesca was one of those stupid head cheerleaders that had to have their own way and picked on certain people. One of those people was me. I slumped against the wall and watched people walking past. What if I were going crazy? I mean, the school is fine, no one recalls anything burning... except for... Drake. I needed to talk to him, and right now.
“Drake!” I chirped, seeing him leaning against a wall, his emerald eyes glinting in the sun. Running towards him, I felt the breeze stroking my cheeks and the sun blazing on my hair. Drake saw me, and grinned.
“Finally coming round, are you?” he asked, smiling softly. I sighed, leaning against the wall beside him.
“Lexi... before you ask, I shall answer. Yes, the school burning down was... true to some extent. It did happen.” He started, but I interrupted.
“But how does everyone-“
“Lexi, don’t ask me,” he said, suddenly serious. “I would tell you, but I can’t. If I did... just trust me.”
“And last night...?”
“What happened last night?” he asked with a sparkle in his eye. He knew, but he wouldn’t tell me!
“Drake, you know...”
“Oh look! The bell shall ring any second,” he said, and sure enough, the bell rang.
“How did you... ?!” I gasped, and he grinned.
“I’m magic remember? Now, come speak to me after lunch, will you?” And without waiting for an answer, he walked off, leaving me even more confused than I was before.
“You lucky thing!” Rosabelle cried, fiddling with a strand of my hair. “He’s like, so gorgeous! Did he talk to you? Did he?” I sighed, this was so typical Rosabelle.
