Strange Magic (A Harry Potter Fan-Fic)
I have always been in to fan-fiction but this is my first go at it, so please: not too harsh judgement okay?
Chapter 1
It Was Only the Beginning
I studied my face in the mirror for the 20th time. I hated myself for doing it, but I was way out of whack with nerves. My eyes shone bluish green with a corona of golden brown around the pupil. My strawberry blonde waves pulled back into a loose French braid. Transferring to a new school is hard enough. I should know with all four times I've had to do it. But on top of that, from America to the UK, where every time I look up when we're driving I feel like I'm on the wrong side of the road. Not to mention I'm a witch. And I'm transferring to Hogwarts. So here I am, at seven in the morning (I have no idea how I'm up this early without my eyes being bloodshot), with a trunk that has my initials on it. SAS, Sierra Alexia Smith. Dad has the car running and my little brother, Gunther, can barely keep his eyes open in the back seat. My mom helps me carry my things and stores them in the trunk of our car. My elder sister by nearly six years is already asleep. Which figures.
We pull up to Kings Cross Station. Dad kisses my forehead in goodbye and I walk alone to the platforms. My cart carries my things as I shuffle past each platform.I'm looking for... 9 3/4. Odd. 7 ...8 ...9 ... 10? I went back towards platform 9 and in passing saw a girl with brown, curly hair run right through a solid column. I stood baffled and confused until I realized: magic. That was how to get in. I imitated the girl, taking up a position and running right at the column. Miraculously, I made it to the other side! I saw a red and black train, bearing the words in golden font "Hogwarts Express." I stood for a moment gaping before gaining my senses once more and boarding the train. All the compartments were full but one with a man in it. Stored in the compartment above him was a briefcase, which read "R J Lupin." The man was covered in a blanket so I could not see his face, but I could hear quiet snores. I didn't disturb him.
After a few minutes of waiting in semi-solitude, three more students poked their heads in the door. "Mind if we join you?" the girl I had followed in asked. She was followed by two boys, one with vibrantly red hair, and one with dark hair and wire rimmed glasses. "Not at all," I said and broke into a smile. They each sat. "So, um...Hi?" The girl was abashed. "Oh! How rude of me! I had forgotten. I'm Hermione, and this is Ron and Harry," she said pointing to the redhead then the one with glasses. "I'm Sierra," I explained. "I've transferred here from the American school." Hermione's eyes widened. "An American? I knew I recognized your accent!" Ron and Harry appeared indifferent. Harry looked like he wanted to say something but didn't. No one else noticed this so I poked him. "Hi," I announced. He jumped. He had been looking out the window and I guessed I had surprised him. His strikingly green eyes bored into my own. "Hi. Sorry, I've got a lot on my mind." He smiled. A little.

After he joined the conversation, the time went by quickly. We were getting along fine until the train screeched to a halt. "We can't be there yet," Ron said, confused. The lights flickered on and off. It got very cold, very fast. I felt as though I could never be happy again. The windows iced over and a glass bottle of water on the windowsill was frozen solid. We felt something board the train. A dark figure passed by our door, and opened it with a wave of its cloaked fingers. Next to me Harry's face looked like it was being sucked off his bones, but his skin wasn't moving. Before I even thought about it I was on my feet between the beast and Harry, and felt my reserves of happiness draining. Suddenly I slumped to the floor.
R J Lupin was awake and a strange light was being produced by his wand. I squinted and saw the dark beast leaving and Lupin followed. I pushed myself up and felt someone helping me up. It was Hermione. "Ohmygoodnessareyoualright? IthinkthatwasadementorbutthoseonlyguardAskaban!" "Whoa, slow down! I'm fine, but is Harry alright?" I looked up and saw the answer to my question. Ron's face was ashen and he seemed paralyzed. Harry too had toppled over but he was unconscious. I moved his head and resumed my seat on the bench. "Actually, could you explain that again? I couldn't understand a word of that."
But before Hermione could get a word in the lights came on once more and R J Lupin entered. He took something from his coat and handed it to each of us, including Harry (who had now awakened). "It's ok," he assured us. "It's chocolate." We greedily scooped it up and instantly felt better. Hermione was the first to start talking. "Are you the next Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher?" She asked. Professor Lupin nodded. Harry had regained the ability of speech and inquired "Did any of you hear that screaming?" I was the first to react. "No... I don't think so. What about you guys?" I asked, nodding at Hermione and Ron. They shook their heads no. Hmm. Prof. Lupin excused himself to "speak with the conductor" giving us the chance to chat privately. Harry followed to the door, looked both ways and closed it. "We need to talk. I think there is a killer after me."
