Chapter 1
Missing?
"Alright Patrick, Daniel is in his room, it's only 10:00 so you have all day to do whatever. I'll give you eight dollars an hour, for about twelve hours? Please don't go outside until George calls you and make sure Daniel eats lunch. And-" Patrick rested his arm reassuringly on the anxious mother. "We'll be fine! Don't worry Mrs. Johnson, Jill's coming over, everything will be just fine!" Mrs. Johnson grabbed her coat and rushed out the door. "George pull the car around front, it's freezing!" "Okay!" replied the father. "Thank you for babysitting!" Mrs. Johnson said as she closed the door behind her. Patrick peered out the window just long enough to see the van driving away, off to wherever. "Lucky people, actually get to leave their house." Patrick mumbled to himself. He jogged up the stairs to Daniel's room.
"Daniel, are you in here?" He peeked his head in a room. "That's the guest room now, I'm in here." Daniel shouted from a nearby bedroom. Patrick walked into the boy's room and sat on the bed. "You moved rooms. It looks awesome!" Daniel looked up at Patrick. "Thanks." Patrick smiled at his innocence. "Whatcha got there bud?" He asked, looking at Daniels toys scattered around his room. "I'm playing with my aliens." Patrick laughed and sat beside the young boy. "My friend Jill is coming over, do you want me to have her bring her little sister? She is 6." Daniel looked up at Patrick with a strange expression. "No thanks, she's icky…" Patrick laughed loudly "Hah! She is kinda icky! Almost as much as your aliens!" Daniels expression went cold."Don't joke about aliens… You know they can see and hear us!" Patrick tried to play along "Oh, I'm sorry! I heard they are forming an army right now! They are preparing attack to people that make them mad!" Patrick could barely hold in his laughter. Just then, the doorbell rang. "I'll go get it!" Shouted Daniel. He bolted out the door. Patrick laughed at the hyper kid, he seemed like a good boy. Patrick looked over at the toys Daniel was playing with minutes before. He saw a weird green alien action figure. "Hm, that's cool." He thought to himself. "Patrick, it's your girlfriend!" Daniel yelled up to him "Whatever" He replied and ran down the stairs. "Hey Jill!" "Pat, I'm hungry, I'll bring up some cookies okay?" Daniel went to the pantry as Jill and Patrick ran upstairs.
"Ouch Patrick!" Jill said as she rubbed her arm. Patrick smiled widely "Haha!" Jill wasn't liking the joke. "That really hurt!" She said as she checked to make sure the lead of the pencil hadn't broke skin. She moaned "Thanks a lot Pat!" Patrick huffed another laugh. "Oh Jill, chill out! It's just a pencil!" Her expression remained. "Then let me stab you!" Patrick clinched his fist as she poked him with force. "OWCH!!!" Patrick moaned, yelped and gripped his arm. He slid his body down his bedroom wall. He strained to look at the bottom of his arm. "Is it bleeding?" He asked Jill as he turned his head with tear filled eyes. Jill laughed "No Patrick, your not bleeding. She grabbed his hand and pulled him to his feet. "All better?" Patrick remained silent. "I think someone owes me an apology." She grinned at Patrick. He rubbed his eyes. "Um, yeah see I would, but that didn't hurt me." He said in a matter-of-fact way. Jill hit him on the head with the rolled up newspaper she had had earlier that morning. "Whatever you say shorty." He plopped down on the bed. Jill sat beside him. "So….." He mumbled. "What do you wanna do." He stretched his arm up behind her head and winked. She turned her head and removed his arm. "Woah there boy-o, I was thinking of baseball of soccer or something more physical." He smiled and bit his tongue. He put his arm back to his side and got up off the bed. "Hey, where you going?" Jill asked and got up and walked to him. "I don't know. This house is super boring." He sighed "And the thing that sucks is that we can't leave the yard or I would go down the street and ask Johnny to play baseball or basketball." She felt his pain. "Yeah I mean your 15 years old you should be able to go places while your babysitting." Jill's eyes immediately grew right the moment she mentioned babysitting.
"Where's Daniel?" "Oh, um, he was in the kitchen when I saw him last. The two teenagers rocketed out the room and ran down the stairs. Jill's heart pounded with every step she took. As she got to the third to bottom step, Jill came to a screeching halt. Patrick followed a little further behind. "Jill, what do you see." Jill remained where she was. "Thats the thing, I don't see anything. Anything but the door. AND IT'S WIDE OPEN!" Patrick flew down the remaining stairs to where Jill was standing but couldn't quite make the stop as fast as she could and BOOM! He crashed into the back of her and sent them both flying headfirst onto the tile floor at the end of the staircase. "AH" Jill saw the floor approaching her face. CRASH!
Jill moaned as she pushed herself painfully off the floor. Her Brown hair stuck to her face to where she couldn't see. "Patrick, why would you run right toward me huh?" He didn't reply. "Patrick!" She pushed her chest away from the tile and sat on her legs. She looked around for a minute but she couldn't see Patrick. "Patrick?" Her voice got a little shaky. She got to her feet, still a little wobbly from her fall, and made her way down the dark hallway into the bright, sun-filled kitchen. She put her hand on the counter to steady herself. "Hey Pat, where are you?" Jill knew he had fallen with her down the steps but she had no idea how fast he got up. But she did know he had had a cushion to fall on down the stairs, herself. She wondered out the door. She shielded the sun with her hand but still saw nothing but white. "PATRICK! I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!"
Her eyes finally adjusted to the brightness of day. Her boots sunk in the deep snow. "Jesus Patrick you about scared me to death!" She punched him in the shoulder. "Did you find Daniel at least?" He rubbed his shoulder. "It was just a joke and no, he isn't out here!" She was becoming very nervous and couldn't bare the thought that he could be hurt on there watch. "Well are you sure he didn't tell you he was going to a friends house?" She asked him nervously "Not me, did he tell you?" She scowled at him "Why would I ask you if he told me?" Patrick shrugged his shoulders "I dunno" Jill ran inside. "Where are you going?" Patrick yelled. She didn't reply. "Jill! We need to find Daniel!" With no luck getting her attention, he remained outside, waiting for her. Before long the garage door raised. "Grab a bike." She handed him a helmet. He tried to force the child-size helmet on his adult-sized head. "It doesn't fit! And those aren't our bikes!" He complained. "Then don't wear the helmet, plus, we are just borrowing the bikes, we need to find Daniel!" He grabbed the nice, 10 speed mountain bike from the rack and hopped on. Jill looked at him and grabbed the handle bars. "No sir! They will notice if anything happens to this bicycle!" Patrick rolled his eyes and got off the bike. Jill wheeled it back to the bike rack and handed him a small, inexpensive bike that looked a tad overused. He glared at Jill. "Why do you get the nice BMX but I get this cheapo one?" Without looking up she replied "Because there isn't another one other than the really expensive ones! Plus, we don't have time to judge the bikes, we need to find Daniel!" He swung his leg over the undersized bicycle. Jill couldn't help but laugh at Patrick attempting to peddle up the driveway on the tiny bike. "Shut up Jill! It's not my fault this bike is meant for people a quarter my size!" Jill rolled her eyes "Let's go."
"Daniel, are you in here?" He peeked his head in a room. "That's the guest room now, I'm in here." Daniel shouted from a nearby bedroom. Patrick walked into the boy's room and sat on the bed.
