Chapter 1: Pleased to Meet You

by: Hasini
Who would have guessed it would be so cold. The sun was shining, there was no wind and it was in the middle of July. Then again, it was San Francisco so it should have been expected. Diana stood on the street corner in a t-shirt and jeans, hunched over with the cold, goose bumps covering her body.
To anyone watching, it would have seemed as though she was busy playing on her iPhone. Every few seconds, she jumped a bit and hit her phone. But she was hitting the menu button to make the phone jump back to life, checking the time. He was late – 23 min late, to be exact. And there was nothing she could do about it. There was no one that she could call, nowhere that she could go – all she could do was have faith that Bacchus would show.
Diana paced back and forth, trying to keep herself warm. It was helping, she realized, and quickened her pace. Suddenly, her foot caught on a jutting rock and she stumbled. She stopped pacing at once; she was the ‘safety first’ kind. Diana had always been like that; if there was a possibility of her of even getting a bruise, she got out of the way. She remembered how she always used to cry even when she got a really small, cannot-even-be-seen scrape. Diana smiled. It was hard to imagine how a ‘safety first’ girl like had ended up on a deserted street like this one.
Diana had met Bacchus two days ago at the Potions Grill – the best place in her neighbourhood to grab a bite.
TWO DAYS AGO – EVENING:
Her mom was late – as usual – and so had asked Diana to eat at the Grill. She had done so – as is tradition for her – alone. It was quite crowded though, so she had had to share her table with a stranger – a totally dazzling guy. It had gone like this:
There Diana was, eating her pasta while reading a book, one of Anthony Horowitz’s horror novels. The Grill was also crammed due to the crowd, so most people were sharing tables, but she was lucky – or so, she thought.
“Is this seat taken?” a masculine voice asked her, startling Diana out of her novel.
Diana looked up, “Um… no, actually.” The boy who had talked to her was tall and looked a year or two older than her. He had dark brown hair that wasn’t too long or too short and bottomless brown eyes that reminded Diana of unbearably dark nights – something she was awfully afraid of.
“Would you mind if I sit here? I can always go sit somewhere else if you don’t wanna be disturbed,” the mysteriously dark guy said, glancing meaningfully at her book.
Diana looked around; there were no empty seats anywhere else. “Where exactly were you planning on seating if I didn’t wanna be disturbed?”
The guy glanced around, and then grinned, “Outside?”
“Where it is awfully cold even though it’s in the middle of July?” Diana enquired, “I don’t think so.” Diana couldn’t help noticing how grinning lightened his dark, dark eyes a bit.
“I’ll take that as an invitation then,” he said and sat down with a glass filled with something Diana didn’t know of. She wasn’t the drinking type; she only consumed a bit of wine. “I haven’t seen you around before. Are you new?”
“I am the ant-social type, so I don’t go out a lot, but other than that I’ve lived in San Francisco all my life,” Diana answered, strangely talkative even for herself, “I think this the first time I’ve talked more than two sentences with a person since I started coming here. And that was around five years ago.”
The guy grinned a second time, “Something tells me this is conversation is out of character even for you.” He seemed highly amused by her, too. “You sure you’re not drunk?”
Diana was thrown there; she hadn’t expected that from him, “Um… no. Not unless, I have started drinking in my sleep.”
“Good, ’cause most people I meet here are usually drunk and totally weird me out,” the guy was now staring at her book, “Anthony Horowitz, huh?”
“I see nothing wrong in his writing. He’s really good, actually.” Diana now realized she was strangely off the charts. This was totally weird for her. She hardly said more than “Hi!” or “Nice to see you” to anyone she knew, even her mom, who had the ability to drone on and on about politics (something strange for even a woman). “Actually, I see something wrong with me.”
“Huh?” the guy looked totally confused now. Diana couldn’t help noticing a lock of hair partially concealing his left eye. “Oh right! You mean the anti-social thing. Don’t worry. Miracles happen. I’m just honored to be witnessing it.”
“And I don’t even know who the witness of my miracle is,” Diana now felt strangely friendly with this mystery guy who was, apparently, having such a monumental effect on her.
“I’m Bacchus,” he answered sheepishly, “Yep, I know: the god of wine. I find it pretty embarrassing, actually. Parents have a strange tack of giving weird names, but you can call me Adrian. That’s my middle name.”
“I’m Diana,” she said and then gasped when the light bulb in her head flickered, “You are Adrian Prentice, as in related to Justin Prentice??? Justin Prentice, author of Knowing the Unknown. He owns, like, half of those research labs in Ireland: the Prentice Project!!! He is, like, world-famous and is one of the wealthiest people in the world.”
“Yep, I’m that Adrian!” he was grinning widely now and looked like the most gorgeous guy ever. “You know my grandfather?”
“Everyone does!” Diana exclaimed, earning surprised glances from nearby tables, who were obviously surprised to see the quietest person in the world exclaim.
“Actually, you will be surprised at how many people don’t,” Adrian answered, smiling. He sipped his drink, his gaze never wavering from her.
“Um… I don’t know. You are pretty popular at school –”
“Because I’m rich, not ’cause I have a super-rich grandfather who owns the Prentice Project in Ireland,” Adrian pointed out, “Your pasta’s getting cold, by the way.”

Fifteen minutes later, Diana and Adrian were paying their bills. As soon as their bills were paid they wasted no time in hurrying outside; it was getting suffocating in the packed Grill. While inside had been warm and overpowering, the outdoors provided a contrast. It was like stepping out of a tropical world, straight into a wintry one.
“So, where do you live?” Adrian asked her, checking out his cold surroundings at the same time, “Anywhere near?”
“I live in Gordon Street,” Diana answered, she was starting to feel the cold, and her thin clothes – which she had foolishly chosen to wear on a day like this –were not providing any comfort.
“That’s a bit far off,” Adrian noted, “A ride, then?”
“Oh – what? Oh no! I can walk there. Anyway, I can take the bus if I want,” Diana stammered and then took a deep breathe, “It’s really all right. It’s not that far off.”
“Really?” Adrian asked, tauntingly. “As far I’m concerned, your clothes are practically freezing, so get in my car.” He started leading her towards the car park.
“Um… ok then,” Diana muttered, then followed him to his vehicle. The car park was packed and Diana and Adrian zigzagged through the cars.
They neared a sleek black Jaguar and Adrian unlocked the passenger side door for Diana. He waved her in and she did. While Diana buckled herself in, Adrian got in. He turned on the vehicle and eased it out of the lot.
Diana pointed out the way and sat back, “So are your parents in town too?”
“Fortunately not,” Adrian replied, his eyes staring straight ahead. “Gives me some peace around the house. Maybe you should drop by some day!” He glanced at Diana with his expectant face.
Diana’s was caught off guard a second time and she hesitated a while.
“If you wanna,” Adrian backtracked now, “You know, if –”
“No!” Diana cried, “I mean, I would love to come over, but I don’t know if my mother will allow that –” What the hell!!! Her mom worked 24/7 everyday!!! “– I mean, you know, because you’re a boy and your parents are not there…”
“Oh well, I can talk to your mother,” Adrian countered, his face reflecting his determination to do so, “If that’s okay with you, I mean.”
“Well…” Diana trailed off, her throat stuck and her brain sluggish. She knew she should most probably to leave it at that, since it was a stranger to begin with. But he was a nice stranger, her optimistic side thought. Who most probably did this with every girl he met, Diana’s pessimistic side argued. Diana’s brow wrinkled. What to do? “Well, you can talk to my mom, but be warned! She is a very strict parent.”
“Awww, I’ll manage,” Adrian laughed, “Will she be home now?”
Diana glanced at her watch. It was a bit after her mom’s off time. “She’ll be there after us. Might take some time though.”
Adrian grinned, “All the better to know you! It’s like, what? 3 hours since we met? Pretty record time, I’ll say.”
Diana couldn’t help grinning, “Yeah. My mom’s gonna be psyched when a boy drops me off and asks me to his place in one day. No, make that 3 hours.” A miracle, Diana thought.
“Uh huh? You are full of miracles today, aren’t you?” Adrian teased, making Diana blush scarlet, “Anyway, you didn’t tell me a date.”
“Um…” Diana was free almost everyday from 3pm onwards, since her “friends” didn’t trouble themselves to invite her over, “Any day?”
“That anti-social, huh?” Adrian chuckled, sending waves of scarlet wash over Diana’s face, “I have a schedule tomorrow, so how about the day after?”
“Okay,” Diana was trembling with excitement now, “Um… time?”
“How about lunch?” Adrian suggested, “Your mom can come over too, you know.”
“She works the whole day, so she won’t be home then,” Diana replied.
“Pretty much like mine,” Adrian noted, “I’ll pick you up?”
“’Kay,” Diana mumbled. If her mom agreed, she’ll be home free! In this “nice” stranger’s house, too. Please say yes, Mom, prayed Diana, silently.
“This you place?” Adrian asked after around half an hour. “Pretty nice.”
“If soaking wet front yards are nice,” Diana said, making Adrian laugh. “Come on in!”
Diana opened the front door and switched on all the lights. It was dark by now. Diana went straight to the kitchen, with Adrian behind her.
The kitchen was modern and chic. There were tile-topped pantries with the entire cutlery placed in their relevant places. Everything was spick and span. There were stools at the counter and Diana ushered Adrian to one.
“Nice,” Adrian muttered, “Seriously, I like it.”
Diana laughed, “You ought to have a way better kitchen than ours, you know.”
“True,” Adrian agreed, “But it’s always nice to see something that feels better.”
“Anything to drink?”
“Hot chocolate,” Adrian answered, “So you are at home, alone, most of the time?”
“Depends,” Diana replied, busying herself with the hot chocolate, “You wanna break in?”
Adrian chuckled, “That would be pleasant, what with the lovely lady occupying the house.”
Diana blushed. Then she heard the front door open. “It’s mom!”
“Time to get ready for the ultimate quest!” Adrian whispered, making Diana grin.
***
“Hey mom!” Diana welcomed her mother, excitement buzzing all over her, “Um… mom? This is Adrian Prentice – Bacchus Adrian Prentice! Ring a bell?”
Diana’s mom stared at them both and then focused her gaze on Adrian, who was now standing by the counter, waiting for his cue.
Diana’s mother is nothing like her. She is of average height – 5’2” – and was dark-haired with dark eyes. Diana, on the other hand, is all 5’4”, black-brown hair and dark brown eyes. Diana looked a lot like her father, who had passed away when Adrian must have noticed their difference in appearance, ’cause he glanced between Diana and her mother with a surprised look.
“Prentice? Oh! The family with those labs in Ireland?” Mom glanced at Diana with a questioning look in her eyes and Diana nodded encouragingly, “How long have you two been in here?”
Diana mentally groaned. So much for encouragement, but then again her mom is always blunt and no-nonsense.
“We just got here, mom!” Diana groaned, “I was making hot chocolate for everyone.” Diana gestured at the pantry to prove her point.
“Oh!” Mom looked at Adrian with one of her detective faces and then smiled, “You two seem to have started without me!”
Then the secret interrogation started, with Mom pushing in small questions in between chit chat. It was her way at drilling out everything a person ever has. Secretive, yet friendly. Luckily, Adrian and Mom seemed to get on well. Diana took a few minutes to go to her room; she wanted some alone time.
Diana practically waltzed into her room and flopped down on her queen-sized bed. She sighed in a way she had never done before. Everything was so perfect and she wanted a minute to take it all in slowly. Everything perfect in a matter of hours! She squealed, her excitement tumbling out in a rush.
“Wow! Never thought I’ll hear a girl like you squeal!” an all-too-familiar voice drifted into her room from the doorway.
Diana got off her bed all in a rush, tumbling off the bed and on to the ground in a matter of seconds. Adrian was leaning against the door frame, his lean body fitting against it perfectly. He laughed.
“What are you doing here?” Diana cried at him, stumbling to a sitting position on the floor.
“Your mother obviously thought I was sensible enough to be allowed in your bedroom,” Adrian answered, sitting down next to her and leaning against the bed. “Like the bed.”
Diana blushed and Adrian backtracked immediately, “I mean, in an ‘innocent’ manner. Okay, that sounded really lame.”
“Not!”
“Yes it did!”
“Not!”
“Fine!” Adrian grinned, “I asked your mother about you coming over to my place, and guess what?”
“What?” Diana’s voice trembled with anticipation.
“She said you can come over!”
“YES!!!” Diana practically screamed. Then, remembering herself, she composed herself, “I mean, that’s great!”
“Sure! ‘Great.’” Adrian chuckled in a teasing tone, “So… Sunday then?”
“Yep!” Diana agreed, her face a brilliant golden, ablaze with happiness.
“At around noon?” Diana nodded, “I’ll pick you up. Can you meet me at the bus stop near the Grill?
“Sure!”
“Great!”
***
Adrian left minutes later. His face was practically glowing. Diana saw him to his Jaguar and he smiled at her before getting in. Then, with his heel in his Jaguar, he swiftly leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. Diana blushed a beetroot red. She felt electric shocks goo through her body, but they didn’t shock her; they felt pleasant as sunshine on her face.
Adrian’s grinning face looked at her a last time, “See you on Sunday!”
“You too!” Diana whispered and then watched his vehicle disappear round the corner. When it did she slowly returned indoors.
“First loves…” Diana’s mom sighed in an agitated tone when she saw Diana.
“Mom!” Diana groaned, then rushed up to her room.
PRESENT DAY:
Diana grinned as she relived the moment. Suddenly, her reliving was interrupted by a car that parked in front of her. The shutter slid down and his face appeared.
“Hey!” Adrian called, “Daydream much?”
