And with my back against the floor and him leaning over me, his fangs bared, I realized that I could not fight him.
His fangs slid back into their sockets and he crumpled next to me and I smelled an unmistakable mixture of his blood and the oil that had spilled.
I attempted to sit up but it was too much. I saw splotches of lights in front of my eyes and I cried out in pain. My throat was aching and I could feel my loss of blood taking its toll... Without my willingness, my fangs slid out.

Preface

"Don't" they pleaded, following me as I walked toward the large double-doors of strong oak.

"Someone must," I said quietly, stopping just in front of the doors.

I bowed my head and the council stepped back, awe and fear in their eyes. "Laudo in excelsis. Dignare me ingredi locum sanctae," I whispered quietly.

There was a low buzzing as the lock on the other side of the door became unlocked. The doors swung open to reveal a large, dark room, with no light.

"Do not, Mistress!" cried one of the members. I did not turn around to see which one, for I had seen the room and was not supposed to look upon unholy things until I exited. "This is most dangerous! Are you aware of the danger you-"

"I am fully aware of the risks I am taking, thank you for your concern. But if Ordyxs honestly cares for his children, I will come out alive if not unscathed."

"You place great trust in our Lord," said someone else. I closed my eyes.

"As should you, decurio, or you should not have your place of rank."

With that last, bold sentence, I took a long stride into the room and the doors swung shut behind me.

It was true that I was frightened, but my coven needed me and it was not my place to put my silly fears before the coven. I spoke, trying to keep the anxiety out of my voice.

"Domine, I seek answers and you know my questions. Please bestow upon me the knowledge of which I have so fruitlessly sought."

There was silence in the room. And then:

"Noli timere fila mi habebis respons," came a faint, deep voice that reverberated around the room.

And out of the darkness, three figures appeared.

All I could make out in the darkness was that they all had red hair. There were two males, one female. They were all unclothed and unconcsious. They made not a sound as they lay perfectly still at my feet.

"Edwin erit prima. Ducet vos in victoria tibi fallere fidem. Crede in eum non sperare semper," the voice whispered, fading, two of the figures disappearing with it.

One figure remained on the floor.

I fell to my knees and shivered. I quickly crawled over to the nude man and pressed my hand to his chest.

His eyes fluttered open and he whispered something.

"I could not hear you. Please repeat yourself," I murmured, amazed that I could seem calm when inside I was ready to leave the place and burn my eyes for witnessing such holy events.

"Summus, colatur," he repeated, barely loud enough for me to hear him. And then his eyes closed again and the doors opened up behind me.
